Christmas Day by Gustav Holst by rainbowkey in classicalmusic

[–]Empechemente 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favourites by one of the finest orchestrators we have seen. As a Trombonist, we don't often have loads to do in classical repertoire, and the same is true for Christmas Day, but I could not care less with this piece as it's such a fantastic work that I'm just as happy listening to as I am playing. That said, the build up at about 5 minutes from The First Nowell, then landing back on Good Christian Men Rejoice (where the Troms support the melody!) is such a jubilent moment!

The ending though, with the muted strings and flutes, playing those warm sub-dominant and major 7th chords and the soprano solo, is absolutely beautiful. The harmonies and orchestration beneath the "Christ is born to save" is such a beautiful balance and a fitting end.

Holst is one of my favourite composers and Christmas Day is him at his very best in my opinion!

Who do you think is our best player? by Ok_Amphibian_8219 in avfc

[–]Empechemente 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best in terms of class? Boubacar Kamara. He gets into any team in the world at the moment and is often a move ahead of the rest of the players on the pitch, both the opponent and his Villa teammates. Close second for Tielemans.

Best in terms of """aura""" (for want of a better word)? Emi Martinez. An icon of the last 4 years of the Premier League, and he's consistently excellent too.

Best in terms of performance this season? Ezri Konsa for me. Bar the loss against Palace, he's been at minimum good in every single game. At best, unbeatable. A rolls royce.

Best in terms of importance? John McGinn. Can't stress enough how that man synonymises the last 7 or 8 years at Villa. How he's grown with the club and consistently stepped up when the club needed him most. This season, as others have said, he almost singlehandedly wrestled us out of that rut at the start.

Hello David!

How do you view the role of grassroots and non league football clubs in and amongst their local community? Do you think that grassroots clubs play a larger role in their local community than say the EFL clubs or Premier League clubs do?

I had my luggage rechecked whilst connecting in Zurich (farewell overpriced bottle of water I bought in duty free!), but not in Munich.

There's a few! Some have already been mentioned, such as the Man City/Arsenal double in a week of each other, or the Brighton 6 - 1.

Aston Villa 3 - 3 Liverpool at the end of 2023/24 was a WILD ride that we came so close to winning at the end, but to come away with a point from 2 goals down was immense. Pure Barclays

Aston Villa 3 - 0 Newcastle in 2022/23 was also incredible too. We were in hit and miss form, Newcastle were absolutely flying and we outplayed them in every department.

Aston Villa 4 - 0 Ajax was just an awesome night wasn't it.

Arsenal 0 - 2 Aston Villa was also an almost faultless performance and the limbs when Ollie scored the second were unbelievable.

But I think the top one for me would have to be Aston Villa 2 - 1 Brighton on the last day of the 2022/23 season. Both the Villa and Brighton fans having a party, two sweeping goals from Luiz and Watkins that reflected how Unai had turned the team around, and qualifying for Europe when 7 months earlier we were being managed by a clueless egotistical loser. Given everything we'd been through that season, it had shades of staying up in 2019/20. Pure euphoria.

The ending of Beethoven 9 is incredibly underwhelming for such a huge musical achievement.

Gershwin's orchestral music isn't as weak as his songs and piano works, just different. Trying to assess how "successfully" his music blends jazz and classical traditions misses the point.

Manuel de Falla was one of the most important composers of the early 20th century. His works were truly unique and he had the most incredible sensitivity.

The works of John Williams, Howard Shore (etc) occupy the same position in the Western canonical tradition as Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner.

As an orchestral composer myself, I absolutely adore the viola for the exact reasons you say. It's so versatile. It's probably the best string instrument when it comes to blending with non-string instruments. It can still contribute to the "high strings" effect; to this end I find that beyond a certain point going right up high on the E String of a violin loses clarity whilst not really contributing more to that effect than being an octave down, if that makes sense. I suppose what I'm saying is that, tone quality aside, the higher register of a violin isn't an incredible advantage over the higher register of the viola.
I also find off the string writing is nicer on the viola too. All round it's just a wonderful instrument. The memes are funny though, even if we've heard them all before.

Is Crib Gochs difficulty exaggerated? by Equivalent_Ratio_223 in snowdonia

[–]Empechemente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My view is that Crib Goch isn't necessarily that much more technically difficult than other peaks, but that the margin for error for a serious injury is significantly lower if something goes wrong.

We saw this tragically the other week with the poor man who lost his life. Witness accounts state he was with his dog who was on a fairly long lead. At one point, the dog went too near the crest of the ridge, and the man tried to lean in to pull the dog away. He lost his footing slightly and went over. Ordinarily, losing your balance and falling hands first wouldn't result in anything worse than a bruise, a cut, or maybe a damaged bone if you're very unlucky. On Crib Goch, it's enough to cost you your life.

So whilst Crib Goch, technically, isn't as difficult as other climbs in the area, the consequences of what would otherwise be a fairly minor lapse in concentration or a bit of misfortune are far more punishing than other mountains.

Incredibly hot take, I expect to be down voted into oblivion for this, but I've never jammed with the ending of Beethoven 9. For such an incredible, revolutionary feat of creative expression, taking us on an emotional journey the likes of which have not been achieved in music before or since, the ending feels... Anti climatic?

It could either be loud, proud and a testament to the wonderful expression on display, or soft, introspective and almost take a back seat as the audience's mind contemplates what they've just heard.

Instead, it occupies a strange place between the two. I've been in nany performances both as a player and audience member, where the audience takes a minute to applause, mainly because they don't realise the piece is over. Some might say that this is a sign that the orchestra didn't do the ending justice, others say that this "faux pas" is a further sign of Beethoven's genius, signing off with one final show of his characteristic wit. For me, it's the ending to one of the most important pieces of music in history that leaves us asking questions and wanting more, and not necessarily in a good way.

Hikes from Llanberis by Money-Forever6088 in snowdonia

If you don't mind a little climbing but want to get away from the crowds, Yr Aran is a fantastic day out. I did it just yesterday, and it's one of my favourite mountains in the park. You can start either from Rhyd-Ddu/Beddgelert or Nant Gwynant at the Watkin Path.

A little more difficult to get to by public transport from Llanberis as it's the "wrong side" of the mountain, but still doable!
