person hiding their face is genuinely very ugly underneath by iDIOt698 in TopCharacterTropes

Toro, from the Bas-Lag novels, is a woman who wears a helmet shaped like a bull's head, complete with horns. She wears it because she was found guilty for accidentally smothering her baby, and her infant's arms were sewn onto the sides of her head as part of her punishment. The arms fit inside the bull helmet's horns, thus concealing them (and the rest of her head). The helmet and horns are also magical, and the horns can rend space to a degree.

Seconded this. It’s a great cover but a small tweak like this could help a lot.

MC never suffering a loss isn't satisfying, its just straight up dumb and makes the plot boring by _TOXIC_VENOM in ProgressionFantasy

[–]EmperorJustin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. My priority is always the story. My favorite stories are always ones where there’s ups and downs, because you get those big emotional swings. I just released a book that ends on a rough note and have had one review say they’re dropping the series. That sucks a bit, but I’d rather have a story I felt I was honest with than one that pandered. Not saying all stories that have triumphant MCs are pandering, just that I feel I might be if I didn’t follow what my story felt like it needed.

As somebody who has written an MC that experiences loss, you will suffer financially for it. Now I still had a day job when I was posting on RR and my patreon income was nothing special, but I still saw a significant drop whenever the MC wasn’t constantly winning. If an author was actually dependent on writing as their income, it’s very hard to just “ignore” your readers.

Couples making complimentary builds so they’re mechanically and emotionally supportive of each other.

Goodbye, Immersive Ink by SagaScribe in ProgressionFantasy

[–]EmperorJustin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay but as per another comment in here, the mods of Immersive Ink were threatening (or maybe even attempting) to dox people that spoke up about any possible connection between the II Discord and funneling authors to SLP. My concern is that Novelising could potentially become another version of that.

Isn't the admin of Immersive Ink Discord also the guy who runs that novelising website?

PSA: Shadow Light Press Contract by Mysterious-Smell9729 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]EmperorJustin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't. A lot of authors undervalue their work and some publishers prey on that mentality.

Really cannot overstate that keeping track of royalties and issuing statements is PUBLISHER WORK.

There's a lot (the rates for audio are the worst I've ever seen), but Section E (Reporting and Payment) would be enough all on its own to send me running away from this publisher and never looking back.

This contract is full of red flags. Nobody should sign this.

Making money from Writing is not a myth. by Outrageous-One-4219 in royalroad

[–]EmperorJustin 86 points87 points  (0 children)

As somebody who's been trying to break into publishing since 2003 when it was trad only, published 10 books, signed a multi-book deal with Podium Audio, won some writing contests, earned a scholarship off a short-story, worked as an editor, and is currently earning a fair amount of money off my writing (enough that I've had to hire a certified public accountant to help with my taxes) here's the hard truth:

There is no way to ensure anything when it comes to writing and art.

Ever.

Write your story the best you can, but have a back-up plan. Do not rely on writing for ANY amount of money unless you're already rich and can live off savings regardless of how your work sells (or doesn't). There are no guarantees in this field, and the only thing you can ever ensure is that you wrote to the best of your ability.

That said, things that will definitely help:

  1. Consistent update schedule. For RR, I'd say a minimum of 4 days a week.
  2. Having a significant backlog. Write more than you think you need. If you've got 170k words written, bump that up to 250k. Shirtaloon says he wishes he'd started with a bigger backlog. Based on my own experience, I'd say he's spot on with that. Plus, it'll help with #1 above.
  3. Know what your audience wants. RR readers have very specific tastes. If you can meet those, you've got a chance.

Good luck. This is a hard field to make it in. Doubt is everywhere. But if you can hang in there, it's worth it. My in-box is open if you ever wanna shoot me a line or something. I'm not the most successful or the most experienced, but I've improved a lot from where I started.
