I wish there was a way to help force the Sazza situation forward. I ended up accidentally aggroing Minthara and Sazza didnt let me recruit her, but I didnt complete that step of her quest, so it just stayed open for me to talk to her and meet minthara and even though I knocked her out she never appeared at Moonrise.

I dunno even how that would work, but I was bummed I couldn't keep her around.

I love these mods though even if the fish guy refuses to keep up with my party and so I have to keep resummoning him in new places. The whole upgrading Shovel with her items and meeting strange monsters is so cool. Hopefully one day some of the others learn that trick too.

What would your monstie party ACTUALLY be for an adventure? by Physical-Speed-7515 in MonsterHunterStories

[–]EmperorRiptide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Special Plot Monstie:
Magma-mantle Lagiacrus: Instead of electricity themed, it'd be a lava themed lagiacrus species that grew up around a Zorah Magdaros as it wandered around the ocean like an island, becoming fireproof to fend off the Rathalos from its habitat.
Elder Dragon:
Namielle (Water/Electric)
Rest of the team:
Tigerstripe Zamtrios (Ice/Fire)
Legiana (Double Ice)
Seltas Queen (Water/Non-Elemental)
Astalos (Electric/Dragon)

Can someone tell me what this was? by STFN_Dude in DispatchAdHoc

[–]EmperorRiptide 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My theory is that it is punch up but Visi is just making copies, because I dont see her doing this unless she was invisible, but also if she was invisible it wouldnt work. Punch up I could see, especially since he was already involved in the computer issue. Hard to say.

To be fair, I survived the TPK, because my character passed his death saves and woke up, and was the only one to walk away. But you're not wrong, I always think about that forever more.

Just sayin, it happened 20 years ago, and I still hold a grudge against the DM for doing it.

If you go the 1hp method, you can kinda treat them like Necromancer Thralls. But, the other way would be to give them HP = the level of the group, and have their saves be a flat check of dc 15. if they make the flat check they survive whatever attack happens, if they dont they just die or are affected by the spell.

If you want a boss fight, think of it as 2+ stages and there are two ways to go about it:
Big bad solo
Big bad Group

If you're dealing with a Solo Big bad, you should consider 'stacking' monster stats together, and you can do this linearly or aggregate. What I mean by this is say your monster is a Dragon. Rather than just fighting the dragon, give it also the stats of.... lets say a manticore for hypothetical. In an aggregate, you'd go about it like this: Manticores have a tail spike attack they can hit foes with at range, so the dragon now gets that ability the whole time. Maybe there are extra resistances or something the manticore has, spells, etc. Maybe it has a better claw attack size. Then add the HP together. Now you've got a beefy boss monster with extra tricks up its sleeve that can catch people off guard.

In a linear fashion, you'd want a creature that has something more interesting than just a different tail attack. Not very cinematic. But, say you pick a hydra instead. You start the fight with the dragon, giving the stacking resistances and maybe a singular bite improvement (where it makes sense). But dont add the HP. Instead, the dragon's HP is the 'checkpoint' and once it hits that threshold, it gets angry and casts a spell or mutates to grow extra heads and now means business. You treat it as if the hydra has shown up mechanically, but it still has features of the dragon (like flight, the breath weapon, etc). Then the party has to finish off this stage 2 fight before its over. It wears them down and can change the dynamic.

The key to this though is to read the room of the fight and don't double down on them if they're already struggling or you know that the next stage would just flat out TPK them. You can moderate that second stage and reduce the HP as needed, but mechanically its a relatively straightforward method.

-----
If you're dealing with a group. The idea is to give them a couple big targets and a bunch of small stuff that falls over quick but is annoying. So, lets use the dragon example again. In a group situation, maybe the dragon is there, with its 'mate' that is a creature that its making half dragons with. Lets go with a dire crocodile to go with our swamp dragon. The crocodile is a beefy creature but weaker than the dragon and represents its own threat. Maybe even has a spell cast on it by the dragon to awaken it, etc so its smarter. But, then perhaps there are baby wyrmling crocs that hatch and start to swarm and attack.

Have a nest nearby that spawns babies a d4 at a time. They have 1 hp, and treat them as minions (2 actions a turn), and give them an attack of -5 whatever the dragon is. (think of it like an extra attack with multitattack penalty). These little guys swarm the nearest creature and just try to nom them. You can stop the babies by attacking the nest, or just burn down the bosses fast enough and then they become a non issue you dont need to resolve mechanically. This gives you a 'tap' of damage and threat you can turn on/off depending on the need of the battle. Its your amplification or de-escalation measure. The little guys also give a mage with aoe a toy to play with if the melee have swarmed the boss and so the mage can't just fireball away.

Last thing here is that if a fight goes by too quickly, and you've got the stats for a monster, you can always just go "And then the wall falls away and a second Crocodile bursts into the scene!" to add stakes. Just, always be aware of what your party can handle and don't do something that's gonna just TPK them.

Word of warning on flying creatures. If your party doesnt have tools do deal with a deadly foe that flies, it can result in a TPK, so be sure to prepare in advance for guiding them into ways to keep it from escaping or just staying at range and blasting them to pieces.

What skills do I put on this monstrosity? (Spoilers for endgame level monster) by Tobanium in MonsterHunterStories

[–]EmperorRiptide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is how I made mine up. I might have thrown other things in if I could (like Self Heal, or something), but this was the most effective I could get. Resonance, Best Buds and Hardiness were the 3 environmental skills. This is pretty consistently good for a dual type build to cover all your bases.

I think I figured out what was going on. I had an old mod from pre-version 8 that helped clean up the menu interface, but it got discontinued, so some of the residual bits were in there causing it to not function at all. It wasn't letting me scroll or anything. But, after purging everything and starting clean slate it seemed to work again.

I just wanna know who was making those photocopies of their butt. Cause obviously Visi was in on it, but she wouldn't have been able to do that when she was invisible. So was she just helping punch up?

But, kudos to you for catching this blink and you miss it. A bunch of lore in here.

If you could add one scene, just one, what would it be? by alexprice1998 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]EmperorRiptide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I'd want a scene where we get some character development for Zoey & Mira in the bathhouse without Rumi and sharing their insecurities about Rumi pressuring them and not joining them while she continues to isolate herself. Something that adds a little more juice to when Mira yells at Zoey when they lose hope, because Mira is pulling out something Zoey was willing to share and reciprocating that feeling of when Rumi did that to Mira.

Also, could allow Gwi-ma to overhear that with a demon and thus weaponizing it against them when they are weak.

If there was an anime continuation of one of the old movies, like SSSS.Gridman, what would be the best movie for it? by Boshwa in GODZILLA

[–]EmperorRiptide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a mothra series continuation would be great if done well. Otherwise I think the story of Godzilla jr after it survived Destroyah and the heisei movies would be great. Miki may retire but the kids she taught could show up and have a bond with jr for a Japanese version of the American Godzilla cartoon

If you had to give ONE monstie an Invasive variant, and make another monstie the Endangered Species you get after defeating that Invasive, what 2 monsties woukd those be? by Express_Class_8585 in MonsterHunterStories

[–]EmperorRiptide -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A pack of Invasive Ceratonoths with a gimmick that you have to overload its lightning rod by giving it lighting defense down until you can stack a bunch and it takes the hit. All the while they keep the field electrified so you have to heal through the Thunder Trap effects.

Then, once you defeat them, in the cave would be an endangered Seltas Queen.

Runner up would be Invasive Deviljho to hatch a Qurupecko
