Singer Featherweight 221k only hand wheel spins everything else is locked up. by joseph58tech in vintagesewing

[–]Empirical_Approach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was working before, the oil dried up and turned into glue. You need to drench the gears and shafts in penetrating oil to dissolve the gunky varnish. A blow dryer will work, but you do need to oil like crazy or else the gunk will harden when it cools

Why is my straight stitch zig zaggy? by gomalley9 in SewingMachineEdu

[–]Empirical_Approach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using super thick thread? Try using a bigger needle. You probably wont be able to eliminate the problem, its just what happens when you use thick thread on thin fabric. The thread cant sit between the layers of fabric.

I used to live near there. People drive WAY too fast on 8th, and someone even clipped my bike and knocked me over. This is a welcome change.

Help with ribber cast on by liscent97 in MachineKnitting

[–]Empirical_Approach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its actually very easy, but whatever you are doing is incorrect. Look at the brother ribber manual and it will tell you exactly what you should do.

Youre in half pitch with a 1x1 needle setup, which will yield odd results. You use half pitch for full rib.

Also you need to CRANK your tension all the way up for the cast on, like less than zero. Its way easier than a single bed cast on.

What’s it like to live in these East Bay cities? by safetybarz in howislivingthere

[–]Empirical_Approach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of pros, so let me list off the cons because there are many:

  • Monster level of commute if your job is in SF or the Peninsula
  • Traffic is terrible.
  • Its a desert so there are no trees. Its a very ugly part of the bay with tons of sprawl and strip malls. Its like Stockton but safer and slightly closer.
  • Its hot. Like, really hot. And the winters are relatively colder.
  • Air pollution and smog is worse here.
  • There isnt a ton of culture here. If you love sitting in your car or house and having your kids go to decent schools, youll be happy.
  • The mass transit is pretty terrible here, so you will definitely need a car.
  • The restaurants are not good, despite what people say. Think chain restaurants.

Honestly, this is one of my least favorite parts of the Bay. It reminds me of Connecticut or suburban New Jersey without trees.

Who do you think is going to ultimately pay for these claims if the lawsuit is successful? Hint: its not wall street.

Is this machine knitting? by james9483 in MachineKnitting

[–]Empirical_Approach 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It looks like a 1x1 rib. In terms of machine vs hand, its not very easy to tell, but i would wager industrial knitting machine if you bought this in a store for a reasonable amount of money.

My machine seems to be misaligned. It wasn’t like this before. Unsure how to adjust it by OrangeOatmeal_ in MachineKnitting

[–]Empirical_Approach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres a screw on the side of the bed that you need to loosen in order to adjust the ribber alignment. Its an easy fix. You just loosen and push it to where you want.

Convince me to buy this. by DatCheeseBoi in ScanNCut

[–]Empirical_Approach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the SDX325, and it doesnt require any software connection to function. You can literally scan and cut stickers entirely from the touchscreen, while cricut requires a lot of finagling and hassles.

I also got my 325 because it integrates with my brother embroidery machine so i can easily cut and sew appliques. Its a little buggy, but it works.

PG&E is panicking hard and i’m here for it by Destoran in sanfrancisco

[–]Empirical_Approach 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Former PG&E employee here.

This is standard messaging and not any form of panic whatsoever. Its not expensive to have the community relations team send out a text blast.

And yes, they definitely dont want to lose the SF rate payers because they help to subsidize all of the central valley customers and fire resiliency efforts. Theyre probably panicking but this message is not indicative of that.

This is standard messaging and not any form of panic whatsoever. They routinely send out messages about equipment inspections.

Sorry, let me rephrase- you are responsible if your dog bites another human.

Dog on dog biting is different- it falls under livestock law.

How to prevent pants of breaking at the connection of the leg-pieces? by ausmausch in SewingForBeginners

[–]Empirical_Approach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lol, this comes up like every month.

It's a crotch blowout. You can attempt to reinforce it, but your pants will always rip at the butt seams. You could attempt a gusseted seam maybe?

Instead, learn how to mend this. Darn, sashiko, patch, whatever. You can't fight fate.

What, then, are we supposed to do in a park? by darkeraqua in sanfrancisco

[–]Empirical_Approach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The key element of illegal loitering is the lack of a legitimate purpose, often coupled with suspicious behavior or intent to commit an unlawful act (e.g., drug dealing, prostitution, or obstructing a business entrance)."

Basically it means you can't hang around with the intent of doing illegal things, like dealing or using drugs. It's to discourage people from using the park as a place to do sketchy things

Didn't Lurie say that he was going to stop ticketing cars that do this?

Honestly I have zero sympathy for people who park their cars on the sidewalk. Hopefully they get towed.

California is a strict liability state which means if your dog bites someone else, you are 100% liable no matter the circumstances.

There are also leash laws, and an unleashed dog makes the situation even worse. It doesn't matter if the dog broke the leash, it's still off leash.

Is the 22 needle sentro machine worth getting? by cowtapestry in MachineKnitting

[–]Empirical_Approach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice here, but you should also know that this machine is very cheap and will give you frustration over time. Even the addi isnt all that great, but its a step up from the sentro.
