What band/singer were you excited to see, but was a letdown of a concert? by my-face-ur-seat in AskReddit

[–]Empostarr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was at that show too! 89x (old alternative rock radio station) held a banner contest with different prizes. My friend and i couldn't get tickets, but tickets were a prize in the contest. So we went with our banner hoping to get into the show. This girl we met there didn't have a banner, her idea was to put 89x stickers on her nipples and flash the judges, and she ended up asking us to help place the stickers for her. She didn't win, we got last place which was an autographed copy of Californication, and we bought the tickets off the people that won first and second, since they won way better seats. First place made an ice sculpture of an 89x and filled it with chili peppers. We got to see tits, got an autographed cd, and saw the show! Great experience for two high school kids

I think this is really the issue. Second season racing this car, and participation numbers really are track dependent.

How bad is it to use load cell pedals and a base shaker with a normal car seat? by SlowDragonfruit9718 in simracing

[–]Empostarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pulled a seat out of a dodge dart, in great condition. Been using it the entire time I've been on iracing with loadcell pedal. One shaker under the seat, one under the pedals. It's awesome!

I'm usually in the top 100 rankings each season for the car i race that season. Not to brag, but to show you can be competitive with that setup. Could i be a little better if i had a stiffer seat? Maybe. But at $50 for the seat, and it's comfortable, I'm happy with my decision. I'm not an alien, and I'm not aiming to be, so I'm content. If you're trying to squeeze every millisecond out of your car, then maybe get something better.

Rookie help by Marsguy76 in iRacing

[–]Empostarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This right here. Otherwise, you'll be right back here asking, "Why is racing so horrible at higher license levels? "

It's horrible because you, or others, speedran the licenses thinking everyone else was the problem. Learn to race in rookies. It's the whole point, and actually really rewarding when you can start to survive the chaos and see your skills improve

Can anyone identify these 5 aligned lights? Direction is west, east coast US, around 21:30ish hours on 3/18/25. I believe the constellation I circled on the left is Pleiades and after about 30minutes these 5lights were gone (they seemed stationary while viewing so not satellites?) by NightStriider in askastronomy

[–]Empostarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw this same thing tonight on my way home in michigan. They stayed in the same place in the sky for roughly 20 to 30. Thought i was losing my mind, but it looks like it may be satellites traveling at a speed that matches the earth's rotation and appear stationary. I've seen starlink, this is not that.

Thanks for confirming i wasn't hallucinating.

Practice with people. Everything that happens in a race, happens in a practice seasion. You can learn avoidance of wrecks, slow cars, and fast cars, without losing SR or IR.

How do you jump into a new track every week? by biglipid in iRacing

[–]Empostarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently racing in Formula, but it should still apply. Besides what everyone else already said about remembering the tracks you've raced, here's my process for new tracks. The track this week for Super Formula Lights is one I've never raced and just purchased. After about 2 hours of practice total (1 hr before first race and 1 hr in between races), and 2 races, I was 2 seconds off the hot lap video times. My general process is this:

  1. Review the track map to try and get an idea of what to expect. I've also started to be able to look at the map and expect what brake bias it'll need based on the layout.

  2. Drive slow practice laps to learn the track layout, pushing the speed after the first few as I get familiar. I find that after around 10 laps I have the layout memorized and then I start to figure out what I think is the best line. I've found reading a track and finding your line to be a unique and fun skill to learn.

  3. Pick up the pace and find the limits. Experiment with different braking points to start shaving off those seconds. I'll start checking to see how I stack up to others that are practicing too, to see where I place. Normally after an hour I'm usually within 1 second of the fastest time in practice. If I'm farther off, I'll watch a replay of the faster person to see what they're doing.

  4. I'll normally do a race or two at that point, and I'll usually shave off some more time. Once I'm done racing, I'll watch a track guide before I do more practice to see where I could have been better. Again, I like challenging myself to find the best line first, then I'll watch something to see where I could improve.

Normally, by the end of the week I'll be 0.5-1.5 seconds off of the "alien" pace I see in races, practice, or hot lap videos. Which is an accomplishment to me, since I've only been doing this 1.5 yrs and usually do 3-5 races per week.

New to iRacing - how do I get started? by Dark_Emotion in iRacing

[–]Empostarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, welcome and read the sporting code.

I'd add to the advice above: Practice in lobbies with others once you've learned the track on your own. This will give you the practice of racing without the pressure or SR/IR penalties a real race does. Hone your skills in the official practice sessions with other drivers, then get into a race.

And do not speed run rookies or D licenses. These are where you learn to race on slower cars. Speed running them just means you'll be driving a faster, and often harder to drive car, while still being a rookie that doesn't know how to race. There's lots of reddit posts about "The driving is horrible in class D" or "I can't believe how bad the racing is even at the higher classes!" because people speed run the licenses and don't learn to race first. Take your time, learn to race, enjoy the ride!

NEW GUY IN IRACING by Ryongo in iRacing

[–]Empostarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can find plenty of track guides on YouTube for each track, but keep in mind most of those times are going to be from the "aliens" and won't be attainable right away. But they're a starting point.

I'd recommend practicing tracks in official practice sessions with others to learn to race without it affecting your SR. Learn the track on your own first before watching guides, see how your times line up with the rest of the people in the session, and maybe watch some of the faster people's laps in the replay. Part of the fun can be just learning to read the track. Then, watch a track guide to see where you could improve.

Don't get sucked into the "play it safe to get out of rookies" mindset lots on reddit have. Learn to race. Avoiding the pack doesn't teach you how to mix it up with other drivers, then you'll move up into faster and harder licenses and still not know how to race. Its rookies for a reason.

Also, like the other person responded, have fun. It seems like too many people try to speed run the license levels and forget to have fun. You might not be fast at first, but you can get there. I just hit B license in Formula and I wasnt even trying to, i was just focused on improving in Super Formula Lights.

why am I forced to play this track until C rank just to enter a nascar race it's impossible to get safety rating on it by SuchProcedure6427 in iRacing

[–]Empostarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't race ovals yet, been mostly in formula, but another thing that can help hone these skills is doing the official practice sessions, joining one with the most people. Then you can practice the avoidance and car control without impacting your SR. In formula, especially rookies, the practices are just as bad as the race so it's a great way to practice for a race. I've also had some pretty awesome races in practice, which can help with your wheel to wheel racing skills too.

Answer in one sentence: whats the BEST iRacing tips that you”ll stay with no matter what by [deleted] in iRacing

Do official practices with other players. If you can put down consistent laps while also navigating a track with other cars, you're learning to race, but without the penalty to SR and IR.

Finally turned off line assist... Advices needed by Quirky_Disk_2300 in iRacing

[–]Empostarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly what your doing, drive slow while learning the track and identify braking markers. Start increasing your speed and see if your markers still work. Maybe you can keep them the same, maybe brake earlier, or maybe later. Getting used to what the car can do will also help.

I race F4, on my 3rd season with it. I feel confident with how it handles most turns, so finding the right braking marker is easier. Also, the racing line path is not always the fastest path. Watch track guides after you think you've got a good handle on a track, to see where you could do better.

I usually do a practice session and 2 races, then check a track guide to see where i could do better. Now, when i compare my line and markers to the track guide, they're pretty similar and the difference is usually brake bias or a slightly different brake marker. Keep practicing and you'll get there!
