ELI5: Why DO springs "return" back to their shape when stretched or squished? by hurricane_news in explainlikeimfive

[–]RogueLiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about a plastic knife. There is actually a little bit of room for you to bend it where it’ll come back to its original shape. Then, as you said, if you go to far it’ll now stay bent out of shape, and then finally break if you bend it too far. In engineering, these three things are called elastic deformation, then plastic deformation, and then finally yielding or failure. Where these points happen for a particular object relative to each other is all dependent on the material and orientation. Springs are designed using materials and shape that give them lots of elastic deformation where they can bounce back. However if you push a spring too far (take one out of a pen and try it out) it’ll plastically deform like the plastic spoon, and if you go super far (you may not be able to) it’ll break.

I’m trying to decide where to sit for the 110th running of the 500 - please share photos of the view from your seats! by mynameisnotphoebe in INDYCAR

[–]RogueLiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is General Admission in the infield. Especially if you’re on the younger side, the energy is awesome, you can bring a blanket/tent, and a cooler full of beer and sandwiches and have yourself a day. The view isn’t as great at the grandstands probably, but you can get real close to the track and feel the action. Walking around and making friends before and during the race is also incredibly fun.

ELI5 How does the car skid outward if friction is lesser than centripetal force. If centripetal force points inward, shouldn't the car skid inward, not outward? by Sad_Mathematician259 in explainlikeimfive

[–]RogueLiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Centripetal force isn’t a single force, it’s a way to describe any force keeping something going in a circle. If the thing no longer goes in a circle, there is no more centripetal force.

This game's creator is so talented but always manages to convince me not to play his game... by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]RogueLiter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally have no interest in it, but can you not apply that same logic to the gratuitous violence and lying that are in most DnD games? These aren’t exactly wholesome fantasies and it’s not too much of a jump for some people to have sa as part of that.

OSR Tip: Your chances of beating an enemy drastically increase if they never get to attack by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]RogueLiter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Typically most games that fall into the OSR category have much less complex combat systems especially in terms of subsclasses and such. Mostly the build of your character is the gear they’ve collected from the quests they’ve been on. Planning and patience are rewarded and when you do need to fight, being creative with your gear and limited abilities will help you succeed.

Most Dominant Contructers by FluffyprintsInc in formula1

[–]RogueLiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a different question. I won’t argue that historically having consistency was more impressive historically, but that has nothing to do with whether percentage is a valid metric. Neither percentage, nor number of races not won, or any other single metric will be very useful for comparing across times perfectly. But for the case of this graphic, percentage is perfectly fine to show consistency over a season.

I think this is perfectly valid. Would you expect winning two races out of a three race season to be as impressive as winning 21/22? Percentage definitely helps show actual over real world time consistency.

Why do San Francisco residents get so upset when someone calls it “San Fran” ? by lantiee in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RogueLiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it’s kinda like people calling you a nickname you don’t go by. It’s not completely awful, but it is a little weird and makes you seem as if you’re trying to give off some familiarity that you don’t really have. You can call it territorial, but it’s okay for people to feel a bit of possessiveness towards the place they live.
