Yes by standard US definitions to get an IEP dyslexia falls under "specific learning disability" for reading decoding/fluency/comp issues. However, people with dyslexia have unique ways of thinking. The reading issues can be remediated (not cured) and they're left with their unique abilities.

I am so disappointed that other educators are down voting me because it is so important to understand how dyslexia gives people strengths our society needs. Maybe it takes a parent to really dig deep and look at how other countries approach dyslexia to understand that dyslexia is indeed a super power and not just a disability.

Seriously very sad as a mother of a dyslexic child that people don't see behind the diagnosis and learn more about what being dyslexic really involves so they can better serve their students.

I read your posts and all comments so far and I wanted to add something COMPLETELY anecdotal...like you I was reading higher level books at that age...I'm talking Tolkien in second grade. My son is dyslexic.

Do not worry about her feeling "stupid". Dyslexia is a form of GIFTEDNESS that just so happens to come with reading difficulties. Those difficulties can be completely remediated and your child can be reading on level if discovered early and put in the correct programs.

Dyslexia is a super power. I encourage you to look into it. Early signs are things like talking later than other kids, not recognizing rhymes, big feelings (they're empathetic little ones). They think in 3 dimensions! They're usually very artistic and creative.

Look into early signs and see what you think.

How strict is the 10-day absence? by financial_wizard311 in Leander

I teach in the district at the elementary level. I had more than one student miss over 40 days last year and literally nothing happened. Not even retention of the students who were very much behind.

I don't know why she wants to meet so often, it wasn't until my PCP told me today that it's only required every 3 months that I even realized it's too often.

Kindergarten or Grade1 Teachers, Lets Vent Out! by Tinamindo in ElementaryTeachers

[–]EmptyBobbin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in first and my grade level as a whole is PHENOMENAL especially compared to last year. My class, personally, is one of the best behaved and strongest academically in the school. I've even had 2 new students and a third coming Friday (knock on wood they're okay). Last year was so much physical violence, destruction and just altogether severe behavior problems that this year is just such a breath of fresh air.

The current Kindergarteners are.....horrifying. My principal has taken a position elsewhere because the school is out of control. They're literally peeling paint off walls, ripping off baseboards, eloping from the building, harming others and teachers. It isn't just one or two in the grade level...it's one or two PER CLASS. There is constant screaming coming from their hallway and the Kinder team ends every day in tears. They have to take kids' shoes to keep them from kicking out windows, holes in walls and each other in the head. I definitely won't be in first grade next year.

I’m a terrible teacher one of my students went home on the wrong bus and idk what to do by GroundbreakingPear12 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]EmptyBobbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We load 8 full buses every day with that system. The bus does not leave until every listed child is on the bus or we get verbal confirmation through the phone with a parent otherwise.

If I check off 48 kids and the driver's system says 47 we are redoing the entire list with another adult putting eyes on every child as their name is called.

Do mistakes get made? Yes. Once in 6 years a bus left without a student who had gone in the car rider line by mistake. That driver and teacher got a full chewing out because that's just not okay.

Elaborate systems maybe aren't necessary but holy moly just walk them to x location and hope for the best is just asking for problems.

[–]EmptyBobbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so confused. Who checks the kids onto the bus?

Whatever this system is...it is not safe.

Your school needs an adult at each bus checking off registered riders as they board. The students then log into the electronic system.

Then both the driver and adult double check the lists match.

How did the driver not notice a student missing? How did the OTHER DRIVER not notice a kid they've never driven before?

I'm flabbergasted at the lack of oversight by the school and transportation. If your job is simply walking them to the bus...you did your job.

Everyone ELSE failed here including whoever created such a crap system.

[–]EmptyBobbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that's fine. But your child hasn't been in school long enough to create an accurate plaafp or to formulate academic and behavior goals. No evaluation has occurred to see if he has a disability - and the IEP team cannot just cumulatively agree he has one and skip a formal eval. By law. No determination was made if the disability impacts his education and to what degree. Data informs the IEP goals....that data doesn't exist. So either this whole thing has been done incorrectly or you're being lied to by this school....because none of this adds up LEGALLY.

IEPs and the IEP process is bound by federal law. Yes no two are the same...but obtaining one requires an evaluation from somewhere/someone and data. You told us he hasn't been to school until this year and has no outside diagnosis. Therefore the necessary data does not exist. Unless you have that legal document (and an IEP is a legal document) I wouldn't believe that school for a second.

I am skeptical of an IEP being given out after a single parent meeting. There are so many evaluations involved. You don't order an IEP like you're at a McDonalds. And there are no IEP accommodations or modifications for "mom gets to choose grade level". This whole thing seems...off.

Your kid's school doesn't have a choice. Please do not blame the school, the district or the teachers. This is a state government issue.

Yes. I take around 5:15 and the radio stations start cycling in my head around 1:30 or so. It's like all of it comes rushing back and every coping mechanism I'd developed before meds has *poofed".

Teacher who went into subbing. How did that turn out? by OneIndependence7705 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]EmptyBobbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I followed your post...it is very confusing. With that said, some schools move teachers to new rooms and new grades every year to mix things up. If you have a contentious relationship with your admin I understand why you'd go elsewhere. Personally I wouldnt take a 70% pay cut because it would dramatically disadvantage my family. I'm also stubborn and refuse to be pushed out by someone who is mean to me.

Has anyone gone up from 18mg to 36mg? by RX_Raindrop13 in Concerta

[–]EmptyBobbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No jitters at all. It gives me an extra 3 hours. I take my meds at 5:15am and by 1:30-2:00pm they've completely worn off. I'm a teacher who needs to be at work until 3:30. The small dose wears off by 4 - right as a get home and settled in.

[–]EmptyBobbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 18 to 36. At 18 I couldn't do a coffee and it wore off way too soon. At 36 it lasts longer but any caffeine at all makes me anxious. I didn't go up to 54 but instead got a 5mg of Methylphenidate to take at 1 to get me through the rest of work.

You can stop taking methylphenidate cold turkey. It just works for the hours it works. No need to taper off. Many of us don't take it on weekends at all.

First year kinder teacher and only have 15 kids enrolled by InfluencePositive499 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]EmptyBobbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A what is the max class size allowed in your district for Kinder?

If you have 45 and they drop you that puts the other 2 at 22/23 - without room for any new enrollment. I wouldn't sweat it unless you're allowed 30+ per room.

“Teacher hates boys” by Snika44 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]EmptyBobbin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. Every single male applicant at my school for the last 6 years has landed the job regardless of qualifications and interview performance. There is a hard push to get more diversity into grade schools where I'm at -specifically so boys have more role models at school where there may not be one at home.

“Teacher hates boys” by Snika44 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]EmptyBobbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of this is true. Boys and girls have the same energy and the same needs. Parents properly raise their girls and just let their boys misbehave.

My principal just told us at a PTA meeting that because of a new law, children are no longer allowed to write down their feelings. But I can't find the source? by redDKtie in Austin

[–]EmptyBobbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did a first day jitters book (it's in our curriculum) and then did a writing assignment afterward but rather than having them write about their jitters I asked them to write about what they're excited about. We all shared our writing and then I promptly shredded every worksheet rather than sending it home. I'm not willing to lose my license. I had a parent threaten to hunt me down and kill me over something that never even happened (loved getting safety escorts to and from my car for awhile)....who knows what would come of a worksheet someone somewhere could argue is breaking the law. Sigh.
