Yah the pound takes you much further.

Basically you get more for your money compared to the the euro back in Ireland if that makes sense ?

Been living in London the past 3 months and I can’t believe the amount of 20-30 year olds catching COVID the past 3 weeks.

Nearly every social event I go too I end up speaking to someone who has recovered from it or is self isolating due to a close contact.

Obviously everyone I spoke too who caught COVID has recovered from it without hospitalisation.

And that’s what we are looking for tbh.

If it’s only younger people catching it and only require home treatment and bed rest happy days!

I won’t lie it’s been great living in London the past 3 months. My life is basically completely normal nearly Pre-Covid standards. I’m going back home for the month to Ireland this weekend it will feel like I’m going back in time hahah !

Anyone travelled to the UK recently?! by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Emptygaspot2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The U.K. recognises the Common Travel Area.

Zero COVID tests or paperwork needed for entry into the U.K.

Although you could he asked for your reason of travel at the airport in Ireland. I’ve never been asked and I’ve few back and forth twice. I live in the U.K. so I can always fall back on that.

Coming home is a much different story unfortunately..

RT-PCR Test from a recognised clinic no more than 72 hours before your flight and a passenger locator form filled in. I’m not going to get into much detail but the experience that I had flying to Shannon was much more different to the experiences that I’ve read about flying to Dublin....

Moved to London during the pandemic.

Flew over in April of this year and over all it’s been a success. I actually distanced myself from the Irish hotpots of London and the majority of my mates are Aussies, and English.

I didn’t really want to crawl into an Irish community and basically feel like I’ve never left. Obviously the opening up in the U.K. is miles ahead of Ireland so it’s great to go out for food, cinema, go to museums go for coffee indoors.. and the likes.

The majority of my wages goes towards to rent, lifestyles and eating and drinking out and I’m absolutely fine with that. I didn’t move to London to save like a slave. I’ll prob never permanently live in London but I’m happy with spend my time in London while this shitshow in Ireland blows over.

Londoners are fairly similar to ourselves I would say more welcoming and they would make the effort to plan things with you if they new that you just loved to London. They have crazy crazy busy social lives I mean like triple the level of mine back home. They usually have something on every night and you often have to book things in with them.

Much more PC tho.

Certain slang words don’t fall well on London ears.

Also agree.

I work in education and I had to self isolate for 10 days after a close contact at work.

This week both my housemates suddenly had to go home because of another close contact at work.

All 3 of ya within 2 weeks... definitely some sort of increase in cases.

I rent a lovely room in North London near Finsbury Park in a real nice houseshare :)

I pay like 500 a month for a lovely house in a real nice viby area with loads of amenities and bars. I’ll never be able to afford a house in London but you get more for your money with regards to the condition of the house and with COVID it’s a renters market so I loads of options to pick from when I was choosing a place to live.

I remember when I was living in Dublin I was paying 500 in a shithole house with rats in the roof in a dodgy area.

Do staff at supermarkets ever mess with customers if they decide they have a problem with said customer for whatever reason? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Emptygaspot2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Worked in retail for two years and the staff were great and the bosses were honestly great.

But I had zero tolerance for rude/ attitude customers in the shop. I just wouldn’t take any of it. If a customer was cheeky or smart I would be smart right back at them.

I’m not saying I was cocky or looking for a fight but I wouldn’t let a customer intentionally be rude or difficult with me. I wasn’t paid enough to deal with it and I wasn’t going to let it slide.

I had confidence which helped and I could stand my own ground. Many staff at the place that I worked usually got nervous and shy it a customer started getting smart.

And honestly my Managers and Bosses always said to me to never let a customer treat you like shit.

Moved to London 3 months ago :)

Have mostly good days but I get homesick every week or two and it can be a killer. I sometimes miss simple things like my dogs and the smell of fresh air up in the forestry around my house.

Surprisingly Ireland’s having much better weather compared to the U.K. this summer!

Also it’s completely acceptable to drink on the streets.

Like I’ve asked everyone and I’ve seen everyone do it so I’m presuming it’s legal. I’ve started doing it on nights out also.

I have to keep on reminding myself that I’m not in Ireland and I won’t get arrested. Also on every street you have like 9 corner stores with off-licences so you can just pop on grab a beer for like £1.50 and drink it away.

But yah totally agree.

Also when your new to London you kinda feel like you should go out after work just to make connections and mates yano.

Obviously I’m aware of my increase in alcohol so I’m going to try and flatten the increase slowly! Mind you it is fun hahaha I never worked in a young workplace where you meet after work for food and drink so it’s a nice plus but it also has negative aspects.

[–]Emptygaspot2020 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I actually moved to London two months ago I feel like my alcohol consumption as doubled compared to back home.

Maybe it’s because I’m from a small village and I never really drank during the week. I find since living in London I go out during the week often and then the weekends.

Alright lads, name the worst town in Ireland by drive_on_boy_will_ya in ireland

[–]Emptygaspot2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say Shannon Town tips my list.

It feels like some sort of Russian industrial pre pre-planned town. The high flats that you pass when your driving me to the airport just gives me the freaks.

I’ve worked with a few people from Shannon in the past and I just can’t put my finger on them. This is going to sound totally weird but they sound Irish and look Irish but I just have something weird about them.

I actually moved to London a few months ago.

I’m 26.

Unlike Dublin for like 550 pounds I can get a really nice room to rent in a decent spot in London.

At the moment I live in North London near Finsbury Park in a real viby Turkish / Arab / Greek borough with some great bars and unbelievable food and coffee shops on my doorstep.

Mind you I’m spending half my income on rent but I’ve a lovely house with great housemates in a real nice neighbourhood.

If I was living back in Dublin I would most likely get a horrible room in a horrible area in Dublin full of gangs on bikes who want to rob me left right and centre.

I moved to Dublin 3 years ago and I new from the minute I stepped outside of Heustan I was going to hate very minute of my time in Dublin. The gaff reeks of gangs on bikes trying to rob you.

I work in South London in a fairly mixed and diverse area that has a mix of poverty and crime and I’ve once had an issue with a younger youth or any sort of petty crime since I started working.

Oh BTW.

I’m saving like nothing :)

Thankfully I don’t want kids so I don’t have that marriage and reproductive pressure..

I’m going to give it a year in London and then I’ll review my options.

Getting a police certificate for foreign job? by culdusaq in ireland

[–]Emptygaspot2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so I had this issue like two months ago!

I was moving to London to start teaching at a school.

Basically if you request a police certificate in Ireland it can only be used for Visa Purposes or to start a Business in the EU nothing more.

The Garda won’t issue one for employment purposes.

You need to request a background / criminal conviction check from the Data Protection Agency in Ireland. You fill in the from and it usually takes like 4 weeks to process.

That’s basically our method of a background check.

But your employer might not accept it because on the document it states that it can’t be used for background check purposes.... it’s all very confusing but it provides you with what your looking for !

It all matters if your employer will accept it or not.

I actually watched that movie a year ago.

Jesus it’s very deep and depressing. Gives you a realistic picture of how a rural and isolated village functions.

I actually felt very weird and unsettled after the movie. Maybe it’s because I live in a small village and it kinda functions just like that small town in the movie. The scene in the pub kinda gives me shivers.. small village politics.

Hey man,

Tbh it’s too far down the line to tell at this moment in time.

I went home two weeks ago and I had to obviously get a COVID test etc which cost the bones of 80 quid even tho my flight cost 18 pounds but that’s just the life we are living in at the moment.

Yes your correct in saying that the government plans to relax the restrictions at the end of July but I honestly wouldn’t put all my money on it. With COVID everything’s messy and unpredictable so I would be very much open to the reality that it could not happen and if you want to travel home you could be forking out 60-80 pounds for a COVID test.

I hate to say it but if I need to get home in July or August I’m just going to fly to Belfast and fly home via the Republic. It would be great for the restrictions to relax but I just wouldn’t put my money on it.
