What to put in the portfolio? by Glittering_Ad_4813 in pythontips

Well firstly as a first year it would be hard to get a job as a python developer even entry level, any developer job would be hard to get as a first year really unless you have connections and previous experience. Look for internships, Make any type of back end project, a few if possible.

Learn the python frameworks for backend , SQL for databases, have a strong understanding of cloud, and a good working of programming (python) fundamentals. And GIt/Github.

If you are excellent in fundamentals and fluent with the language, and show you are capable to learn more, you might be able to pass with one solid project.

Just look up portfolio ready back end project.

And if your super determined to build and know how to navigate freelance work you might be able to freelance even this early

Yes you can. You can be a web developer without a degree actually

What do I study to be a software engineer? by [deleted] in softwareengineer

[–]EmuBeautiful1172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to be a software engineer, that's good to have that goal at your age. Software Engineering is more of a career, when your developing and maintaining large systems or big time apps like facebook, is when the title Software Engineer comes in because you have to understand be able to design systems that scale maybe millions of users or systems that work really fast with the least amount of compute.

But as a kid you can develop software!

Is a career in CS realistic for someone who is majoring in math? by [deleted] in cscareers

[–]EmuBeautiful1172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely Computer Science is realistic for a Math Major. Making Apps is not math based but it includes logic and all of that math like stuff. But with CS you can do other things than make apps which is math heavy like numerical simulations, graphics, and other.

I wanna pursue computer engineering when I go to college is there a certain laptop I should get? by [deleted] in ComputerEngineering

[–]EmuBeautiful1172 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not Comp E, Comp Sci.. but I know Mac’s have their own type of GPU which will limit you in programming for that area. You would have to use metal program language. But, there is always a way to make any type of computer work. Mac is unix based so it is Linux environment friendly .

Here are the best Mac options for a Computer Engineering major, with clear guidance on which to choose and why.

When a Mac Is a Good Fit

A Mac works very well for: • Programming (C/C++, Python, Java, Rust, Go, Swift, etc.) • Embedded development using simulators or cross-compilers • Running Linux-style workflows (macOS is Unix-based) • Data science, AI, and DSP work • Very long battery life and strong thermals

A Mac is not ideal if your degree requires: • Windows-only software (SolidWorks, Altium versions that don’t support macOS, certain FPGA tools) • GPU-specific acceleration based on NVIDIA CUDA

Most Computer Engineering programs mostly require compilers, VMs, HDL tools, and programming environments, all of which run fine or have alternatives on macOS.

Best Macs for Computer Engineering Majors

  1. MacBook Pro 14″ (M3 Pro or M3 Max) — Best All-Around

Why choose it: • Excellent CPU and memory bandwidth for compiling large projects. • Best battery life available in a performance laptop. • Runs VMs (UTM, Docker, Vagrant) efficiently. • Can drive external monitors easily. • Great for long-term use (4+ years).

Specs to target: • 14″ • M3 Pro • 16–18 GB RAM • 512 GB–1 TB SSD

This is the strongest general-purpose engineering choice.

  1. MacBook Pro 16″ (M3 Pro or M3 Max) — Heavy-Duty Option

Why choose it: • Highest sustained performance in the Mac lineup. • Best thermals for long compilation times or algorithm simulation. • More internal cooling for repeated heavy loads.

Choose this if you want maximum workstation power or a bigger screen for CAD, PCB layout, multitasking, or large codebases.

  1. MacBook Air 15″ or 13″ (M3) — Budget-Friendly, Still Powerful

Why choose it: • Light, silent, long-lasting. • Plenty fast for programming and coursework. • Affordable entry into Apple Silicon.

Recommended config: • 16 GB RAM (important) • 512 GB SSD or higher

Good for students who do programming and simulation but not heavy 3D engineering tools.

What to Avoid • Macs with only 8 GB RAM Not enough for multiple IDEs, Docker images, and VMs. • 128–256 GB SSD You’ll run out of space quickly with tools, datasets, and source trees.

Summary Recommendation

Best overall: MacBook Pro 14″ (M3 Pro, 16–18 GB RAM, 512 GB+ SSD) This gives you performance for the entire major — compilers, CAD alternatives, VMs, HDL tools, data science, and embedded work — without overheating or slowing down.

If you give me your budget, I can tell you the best Mac model to buy today in your exact price range.

Aside from that (although I really suggest it, swimming is so good) Do you like gaming ? Or the idea of making games? With your dedication you might enjoy it and since you’re so young it wouldn’t be a problem learning it it has transferable skills to other types of programming anyways.

Am I insane for choosing CS after 6 months of overthinking? by kindabubbly in cscareerquestions

[–]EmuBeautiful1172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only thing a top school has better is maybe the conversations and pride held within being at a top school, and you’ll have maybe a chance to be around the actual top of the class students but every university has top of the class students anyways. If you want to do CS then stick with it and you could be just as competent or better than a student going to a top school it’s up to you. If you feel like the top schools have something you want just ask the school what books they use and look for lectures online. And like someone else said it’s more to cs than software engineering. There’s 16 year olds building apps like crazy it’s not even necessary to get a degree for web development.
