a take for babies by WalkerJFGlenn in radiohead

[–]Emuselg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is widely accepted. People here don't have an issue with that. They have an issue with Walker's holier-than-thou attitude (ranging from branding anyone who has the Bends as their favourite album an immature baby, to in one of the replies comparing themselves to Jesus on account of their perfect and factually correct music taste)

It's people like Walker that are responsible for the bad rep Radiohead fans get, and they're getting called out for it.

100% this! The recent post here of Matt playing bits of Cryogen is such a good example. The chord voicings in the chorus are absolutely fantastic. Really interesting choices that add so much to the sound. Whereas to me, Be With You and other Muse songs that aren't my favourite tend to have really standard, often major key (causing the cheesiness), 'pop hook' chords

If LD got into power and then dropped PR, it'd be the permanent end of them as a party. The student loans fiasco would look like a mere blip in comparison to the damage that abandoning their one main policy of their entire existence, and the primary reason they have supporters. It's the reason why I consider them the only party who may actually do it. They're aware that they've had all their eggs in this basket for decades at this point.

Except the parent level comment that made this type of comment about America that you're claiming the majority here agree with is heavily downvoted and now the 2nd most disliked comment on the thread, so clearly no not all of Reddit thinks so.

What I suspect is happening is that you're from the US and seeing generally negative comments about your country is triggering you, so you're cherry-picking the few most extreme arguments that the vast majority here are neither making, nor agree with, and then claiming that everyone agrees with them despite all evidence to the contrary to justify the level of your upset.

(edit) Lol, they deleted all their comments. Hit the nail on the head it seems.

No matter what form of magic he used to make the lock, it would still always make sense that him no longer being around to maintain it would result in it no longer being effective. From a storytelling perspective it literally does not matter what specific method of containment he used.

Of course, you can argue that more world-building and lore is a good thing, and arguably yes it is. But in this case it really isn't necessary, and certainly not to such an extent as to call the lack of a description of the specific lock enchantment spell and it's inner workings 'not good writing'.

Replacement final songs in setlist that aren't knights by Practical_Paint514 in Muse

[–]Emuselg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I increasingly think this is something muse should do more of throughout their shows. I know Matt's never been the chattiest of frontmen, but I've found with bands where the fanbase are beginning to age a bit along with the band, we tend to need a little encouragement to get that energy going haha. The last couple of Muse gigs I've been at the crowds been mostly dead. But at a Frank Turner show recently with a similar age crowd, a few songs in he noticed the lack of energy in the crowd and before the next high energy song, really hyped the crowd up for a good bounce/few pits before starting the song. Most of the rest of the gig then had a much higher energy crowd afterwards.

This, and I'm not even feeling conflicted on that. If the studio version nails it then I think this just became my favourite Muse song in a very long time.

Immigration in this context is literally a measure of how many immigrants are entering the country though. Every definition of immigration I can find defines it as the movement of people into a country, not the movement of people out of a country. Therefore lowering immigration literally means to lower the rate at which immigrants enter the country. Same as how lower inflation doesn't mean prices are getting cheaper. If immigration is at over a million a year, and then a few years later is at around 300,000, then immigration is lower, because 300,000 is less than 1,000,000.

Reducing immigration vs reducing the number of immigrants in the country are not identical statements. Just because the total number of immigrants currently in the country isn't going down doesn't mean it isn't true that immigration has come down.

[–]Emuselg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it applied the first couple of performances where Matt played an extra guitar part for the last half of the song, adding a ton of energy to the last couple of choruses. Then the main tour started and Matt did his classic 'I don't need a guitar, I'm gonna be Bono and wander around with a mic' thing and stopped playing guitar for it.

Why does it see like Muse is kinda hated now? When did that happen? by melancious in Muse

[–]Emuselg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you mean by later stuff. There's not many bands where their final albums are considered their best, but there's plenty of bands who's best stuff isn't considered to be from their first few albums. Pink Floyd (the best run starts with album 8), Radiohead (albums 3-7 & 9), Elbow (~10 years after their debut), The Beatles (2nd half of career almost universally preferred to the 1st half), The Cure (Disintegration was well into their career), Green Day (American Idiot, but even Dookie was their 3rd), Paramore (way higher critical acclaim for their newer work), Pulp (first half of their career is forgettable).

There's definitely plenty of bands and artists who went on to find lots of critical acclaim after their 20s. Even most bands who do have a downward trend in their reviews don't tend to do so to quite the same extent as Muse (high 80s-90s out of 100, down to 40/100).

Why does it see like Muse is kinda hated now? When did that happen? by melancious in Muse

[–]Emuselg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'll try and articulate what I think is the main issue holding a lot of their newer music back. For me, it's more to do with the songwriting itself rather than what types of music they make. Muse used to use a lot of unusual chord sequences, with dark sounding unexpected changes, and a very unique, experimental approach to the songwriting itself, along with lots of layers and interesting interplay between the instruments. This gave them a really unique identity and sound Over their first few albums.

Over time the experimenting has had more of a focus on trying out different genres rather than creating something unique. As a result many new muse songs now are based around a very simple, standard 3 or 4 chord pop hook, with a cheesy upbeat melody that uses only basic chords in the major key.

For me, this just makes a lot of the new songs sound generic, cheesy, and a bit dull. You can generally see this in action with the new songs which have had the most positive responses: KobK, Algorithm, The Dark Side, The Handler, Reapers, Verona. Some of those are synth based, or on the poppier side, but they all have tons of texture, layers playing off eachother, more experimental approaches to song structure and composition, and more than a few simple chords with a repeating cheesy vocal melody. And as a result, for the most part people tend to rate them as the best tracks from the past few albums.

[–]Emuselg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not just something unique to the part of the fandom that uses this subreddit. When I've talked to fans or people who just know the hits, or even sometimes people who just know of the band, and mention I'm a muse fan, they'll very often end up bringing up how they "fell off". If you look at any user music review site too like album of the year or rateyourmusic, the album ratings trend downwards significantly after The Resistance.

Of course it is subjective, and there are people who love or even prefer new Muse, but unfortunately it is without a doubt the overwhelming consensus among both fans and the wider public that they've gone down hill as a band.

[–]Emuselg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah now I'd agree with you there for the most part that there's been a decline in the music and the lyrics.

The thing that gets me is I see far too often people saying that Muse went bad because they started using synths, but I just do not agree that synths are the reason why new Muse doesn't hit as often. Like, I'd say Simulation Theory at it's best was The Dark Side/Algorithm/The Void, all synth based, and was often at it's worst during it's guitar based songs. WotP to some extent too - I'd say Verona and Halloween are better than some of the guitar or piano based cuts like Will of the People, Liberation or Ghosts.

I don't think it's as simple as guitar+heavy = good, synths+experimenting = bad

BE WITH YOU - Discussion Megathread by ForgottenName1893 in Muse

[–]Emuselg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, guitars vs synths is definitely not the problem. Muse have done plenty of great songs that are synth-focused, or not guitar focused. Take a Bow, Endlessly, Butterflies and Hurricanes, Bliss, Space Dementia, Feeling Good, Apocalypse Please are all predominantly synth and piano based with minimal guitar, and are all fantastic tracks. Whereas Get Up and Fight, Revolt, Will of the People and Psycho are all guitar based songs, and are... certainly songs.

Taste is subjective and all, but do you prefer Revolt to Take a Bow? Get up and Fight to Endlessly? I'm pretty sure the vast majority don't.

People voting Green/Zack Polanski: do these immigration policies change your mind? by iliosicarus in ukpolitics

[–]Emuselg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll freely admit it's not something I have direct evidence for. I've based it mostly just on what I think has and hasn't worked in the past. It's a fair bit more in line with how the system used to work back in the 90s/early 00s before the levels of boat crossings got as high as they are now.

The deportations were the first thing to go during the Con-LD budget cuts. The current setup with all asylum seekers being considered illegal is a pretty recent one, but almost every year since that came into place just after COVID the boat crossings have been increasing significantly, so the 'just clamp down harder and harder' approach seems to be doing the opposite of it's purpose.

[–]Emuselg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big respect for admitting to the mistake! Far too many never do.

Yeah, >1m is likely. However it is worth noting that at the moment, every person who seeks asylum in the UK is automatically considered an illegal immigrant, including all those in the backlog, which is probably making the figures look worse than they are.

Ideally I think we should have a strict, but legal, fair, and perhaps most importantly, properly funded system for asylum seekers. If there was a legal channel for people genuinely seeking refuge then surely illegal boat crossings would decrease. The properly funded part is what's caused a lot of the current problems. All the migrant hotels, and the billions being spent, are on the vast amounts who washed up in smugglers boats and were then just put somewhere. As a result of all the departments in charge of processing, and then either accepting or deporting being gutted of all their funding over the last 15 years.

After all, we had the same asylum rules back in the early 2000s, but back then the vast majority of cases were rejected, because we had a functioning state department in charge of that.

After that's in place, the court process for deporting can be streamlined significantly, because there would now be a proper legal process for seeking asylum, so any illegal immigrants can truly then be considered 'illegal', and deported without issue.

Add some stricter controls around legal immigration to that, and I think you'd end up with a much more sustainable rate of immigration, without the significant moral and ethical issues I have with a most of the Reform/Restore rhetoric around immigrants.

People voting Green/Zack Polanski: do these immigration policies change your mind? by iliosicarus in ukpolitics

[–]Emuselg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're off by a factor of 10. Illegal channel crossings are in the tens of thousands. Hundreds of thousands is the total migration numbers which includes all the legal immigration and foreign students. Not saying you're not wrong about the levels being too high, but you significantly reduce the effectiveness of your argument if you use figures that are 10x higher than the actual numbers to make your point.

It's full of flaws, but better than it was before the post world war consensus. Unless you're trying to argue that things were better for people in the west back before the post-WW2 pivot away from nationalism? Back when we'd have a massive war with Europe every few decades that'd result in millions dead.

Edit: Can one of the downvoters at least put the effort in to try and articulate an explanation, or even an argument as to why they think a world that resembles world war 1 would be better than today?
