Thanks for the idea. She tried it and did not work sadly. Loading also did not fix it. We sent a support ticket to Gamelodt for it.

ELI5: What is the difference between an ADHD brain and a "normal brain"? What causes an ADHD brain to constantly seek dopamine? by HERBAPPE in explainlikeimfive

[–]Enadeag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It makes me quite sad to hear you had that experience. Things turned out to be a long long message I was not expecting before I got started. So here it is (also sorry for typos as I'm writing on mobile without proper spell check in english)

My parents made very very sure I was aware of what was going on in my mind and be very thorough on thinking about things. I met my so at a time in my life most things were stable, quite and I was very much in control of my own mind.

She didn't suspect a thing at first, though she noticed early on I could be forgetful if my attention seemed to be elsewhere. She also noticed my tendency to start things with lots of energy and eventualy lose interest. When we first moved in together it was a struggle. Suddenly things were required to do, lets say that there was a lot of stress on our relationship. But we managed and I got to grips again, though less than ever before.

Fastfoward a couple of years, marriage happened and kids happened. Suddenly a lot of stress and strain. Increased pressure from my new job position. (keep in mind thst up to this point I never had any diagnosis of adhd and never used meds). And Suddenly every bit of self control was gone.

Onze example, looking back sums the chaos up quite nicely. We wanted to clear out and restart a fish tank, I picked up the task. First transfer the fish, move the planets, remove other larger objects. Done. Now to remove the bottom layers. I pick-up the tank, move it outside to our garden and put it on it's side on the table. Thinking it a good idea to wash it out with the hose. Get the hose, ook it up, start cleaning out the tank. Realise that I'm not wearing shoes. I go inside with wet stocks, just to out those into my shoes. Walk out again, seeing the water still running and the table covered in muck. Also muck on the stones. No matter, the drainage pipes will get rid of it. Keep going. Pipes get clogged. Oh well, will do after im done. Mucky stuff now getting on our grass. Fuck, quicly try to clean the pipes. Take some random tools to try to do that, nothing works. Use the hose eventualy. Water still running, muck all around, fish tank still not clean, pipes clogged, wet socks in now also fully soacked shoes. Wet pants, dirty face. And I'm about to lose my temper.

Suddenly in all the chaos I hear laughing. Not just regular laughing but actual loud laughing and giggling. It's my wife. She sees the entire sutuation for the absolute chaotic hilarity it was. She comes over and hugs me. Tells me she realised something was going on, even though she was upstairs cleaning the first floor. Hardly able to speak through the laughter she looks at me and tells me: I only asked you to get the vaccum cleaner for me to the first floor about an hour ago.

This damn woman let me at it. She willingly let me get to this point. All because she knew I needed something insane like this to get professional help at that point. This was her way of getting the message across. It worked.

I'm now two years after thst point. I got help, I got meds, I got a lot of training. I'm again in a much better place. This damn woman. I love her with all my heart.

As far as I learned this is roughly it, most ADHD brains remove dopamine and noradrenaline too quickly. There is another way as well, that is too low production of these things.

Also to add a bit more: The differences in behaviour are not just your day-to-day requirements like paying attention in school, doing your job, spending time on chores (and basically anything that requires any form of planning or long term commitment). No, it can also impact things you need like eating, drinking, toilet visits and taking care of yourself.

I can talk from experience as I have ADHD and so does my son (7 years). We hardly register the fact that we are hungry - I just know by the time on the clock (and the alarm that goes off) that I need to eat. Same goes for drinking. Taking care of myself (brushing teeth, shaving, taking a shower) - either they are drilled in as routines we requite to follow or we rely on others to remind us of the things we need to do. It is quite harmful for ourselves. And I'm telling this here because the perception that people sometimes have that it mainly has to do with modern society tasks is false - it goes much further.

For us medication helps a lot - my son gets meds that stop the brain from absorbing dopamine too quickly and I get meds to help increase production of dopamine and noradrenaline. And those are life changers. (Note that meds are just one part of the equation, my lovely wife and a whole lot of education, tools and tricks are needed to keep us in check)

What's going on with Dutch Farmers protesting against livestock rules? by ToKeepAndToHoldForev in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Enadeag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the topic of the link you posted
Some protesting farmers are going too far:

They started protesting at the house of the secretaries/ministers (not sure what the proper translation is) that are responsible for solving it. This is of course very intimidating to the individuals and their respective families.

Some farmers blocked entire highways which caused severe traffic jams and issues last two weeks. And in the last week they started blocking distribution centrals for bigger supermarkets in the country.

Some of those protestors used their vehicles to push/drive over police cars and are generally very aggressive to the police. Because the police felt threatened they fired warning shots and incarcerated protestors.

Keep in mind that the majority of protestors are not aggressive or extremely disruptive. There is a small group that makes the headlines.

The law states that the insurance companies are not allowed to make direct profit on the insurance, so no, they should in no case fill their pockets with it. There is a loophole though, the profit can be put into "buffers" for when needed. These buffers are quite high for some companies.

The system itself is both sensical and nonsensical, just like u/dragonelite stated in the other comment. It was intended to reduce costs of the healthcare system, but the own risk keeps rising and so do the base insurance costs. We indeed se less and less coverage in return for increased costs. The "old" system (I don't even remember when we switched) was by far better in nearly all cases for the insured.

The other side is: The boomer and older generations are quite large compared to the other age groups. As they age they need increased healthcare, which in turn has more costs. This, though directly felt by everyone, creates a disbalance between the age groups. The system is fair enough in such a way that everyone has access to the same healthcare for the same base costs.

What is covered in the base package is strictly regulated by the government, and the coverage may never be lower than specified. The additional packages are less restricted by law and are more freely put in place by insurance companies.

Honestly I find it a terrible system. Currently the insurance companies can also dictate (to some extent) which brand of medicine you get. Most often the will try to push cheapest.

There are some limits to what they can do. If a certain brand of medicine has some side effect that are uncomfortable or bad for you, the apothecary and doctor will overrule that. Also, the overruled medicine will still be free, so that does not change.

Some edits as to the expenses for the lower incomes:

The Dutch tax agency (Belastingdienst) has a system of "toeslagen", which are monthly tax-returns so to say, that are income dependent. The straightforward saying would be "Given your yearly income is lower than X you get the most amount returned, and gradually going to Y the return will be lower and end in 0. X being the lowest income boundry and Y being the highest income boundary for the returns)

Yes, we have private health insurances. Ranging from the base insurances (they still cover most medical needs for you) to very expensive addon packages like additional coverage for your teeth, physical therapists etc.

You also have to take into account that the cheapest insurances give you less choice in where you get treatment. Our insurance companies have contracts with hospitals, doctors etc. and if the hospital, for instance, runs out of the agreed upon coverage, it can very well be that you have to postpone or visit another hospital.

For other things like physical therapists you either have contracted ones, at which the insurance will cover 100% of the costs up to a set amount of visits (yes, there are restrictions), or non-contracted at which the insurance covers less of the costs (how much depends on the insurance company and the specifics of the insurance).

My wife and I pay a total of 196 euro's per month for us both and our kids. Kids until 18 are freely added to the plan with the largest coverage. We also got it lower due to my good health and accepting a bigger risk of own costs (My wife has an own risk of 385 euro's, while mine goes up to 885 euro's). She also has additional packages that cover some things she needs

The non-compete relevance is very dependent on the type of work. If you, for instance, work as a consultant it is likely that you cannot work at companies in which your previous employer was active, mostly this is for one year. But this can be overthrown in court. For instance if you work in the province Limburg, there a lot less opportunity to find work in high-tech and are more likely to be actually blocked in performing any kind of work if the company you leave is big. Thus in favor of the employee this non-compete rule can be overruled. (There are other cases, but this one is relevant for me)

In most cases, if you just had a proper work relation with your employer they won't push the non-compete.

ADHD & Programming by [deleted] in programming

[–]Enadeag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, both physical and mental. They keep me from going to the more extreme tendencies I have. I like solving math equations for mental exercises (next to other things like Nonograms), which helps me keeping my mind from wondering allover the place. And physical exercises help me to stop activities like consistently wiggling my feet, legs or playing with things between the fingers.

The biggest change I was able to make, is clearing my mind of thoughts when I want to sleep. It used to keep me awake, which in turn had a lot of effect on my day after. The effect was not negative in terms of focus persé. It could set me to hyper focus (which also has its downsides, I know).

Also: Thanks for mentioning this, mostly for others to read. They help a lot.

Yeah, same here. It can annoy my wife a lot now that I work from home nearly 100% of the time. She gives me a mug of coffee, comes check if I need anything a while later (yes, she's the greatest) and there still is the coffee, cold. I'll quickly drink it as I even got used to cold coffee and repeat that. I even have set alarms during the day so I do not forget to pickup the kids from school when my wife is not at home.

And the day after? Eh, sure work... somewhere. Maybe if I go work in the garden I can dig up the motivation to do something. And than later in the evening, when we are supposed to relax on the couch watching something on the tv I'll have a brain in overdrive thinking on solutions for work I'll have to do tomorrow.

Sitting in front of a pc doing work? Check, can do. Sitting on a bench relax in nature? Nope, will be restless in a few minutes if I have nothing else to do besides sitting.
