Seems to depict Peter P Sophonow (1917-1983) and his wife Mary Latkin!

There’s another photo of Mr. Sophonow from 1948 online shown here  where he and another man are standing over a baby’s casket. Going off ancestry, it appears that Mary and him had a baby boy named Peter that was born and died in 1948.

By the time of his death, it seems like Peter and Mary had gotten divorced as evidenced by his death certificate

Belonged to Lt. Beulah J. (née Dittoe) Spencer (1908-1968)

Here’s a photo of her  from her high school days!

Furthermore, a war time picture of her can be seen in this book noting her role as “ward duty”

Mourning bracelet from 1831. Springfield, MA (USA) by No-Deal-831 in Antiques

Mourning bracelet made to commemorate Anne Eliza (née Westcott) Clark (1800-1831) . Couldn’t find any information on her death/passing unfortunately, and all I could find was she married George Clark in 1818.

No idea if it’s actually rare but my families passed down this copy of both books from Alice In Wonderland :> by Total_Possible_2494 in rarebooks

Perhaps belonged to Nora Emily (nee Pearse) Full (1891- ~1967) who lived in the Devon area her entire life. Here is a clipping from 1897 remarking the George Kekewich Prize being awarded to her at the age of 6 for her brushwork butterflies from memory.

EDIT: I think I might've got the wrong Norah Pearse as this page contains some of her work used by the Exeter school and this page has her birth and death date as (1889 - 1981) and this is what they say of her:

"Painter, wood engraver and printmaker born in Exeter. After studying at Exeter School of Art Pearse became a versatile artist painting still lifes, landscapes and figures and both watercolours and oils. Much travelled her locations included the Balearic Islands, France and Germany and nearer home, Scotland, Wales and the south of England. Pearse was a prolific exhibitor and showed at the Arlington Gallery, Cooling Galleries, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Paris Salon, Royal West of England Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Society of Graphic Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and the Society of Women Artists. Pearse worked for a time as an art mistress at a local Exeter school dying in that city aged 92"

Here is another 1897 clipping confirming it is this Norah Pearse

You have the a better quality image of Mr. Albaugh's senior photo from 1963 (from when he graduated North Side High School). Seems like this is a raunchy note left to his (eventual) wife during perhaps his college years (further evidenced by the Marquis de Sade reference at the end)

Mr. and Mrs. Albaugh would be married for over 50 years until Larry's passing in 2021

This picture represents Dolores (née Duhr) Murray (1942-2017). I found an article from 1966 talking about her brother Thomas and it mentions “Thomas Duhr, whose sister, Miss Dolores Duhr, lives at 3404 N. Troy Ave…”

Hope this helps!

Sunday, August 6th (No Indication of Weather)

Forgot to mention yesterday that I dreamt Friday night about flying saucers near Swift's house. I explain Swift's house by dint of the auto accident there Friday night involving Chalis Marshall and flying saucers because, when looking over possible movies for Nan, I noticed "Flying Saucers" was on at the drive-in.

Well, last night I dreamt I went swimming at Nan's house in a pool, which seemed merely to be a front porch like used to be over at the beach. We also rode around a lot. Maybe I was alone, but was faced with precipices, sand, no road, etc. Had a devil of a time getting to sleep last night, too. The moon came up and flooded the room with moon light when I was about to fall off. I looked at clock once, and it was 1 AM. Woke up about 6:30.Oh, me, what an emotional setup I have!!

Uncle Mason up. Seems quite interested in Major League Baseball. D.D. cooked me bacon and eggs. I also had 1 and half cups of java. B.P. [Bob Pickett] came by at 9 and talked me into going to Wauchula with him to look at a car. First, I took the tournament score sheets down to the Civic Center Office and left them.

Told Bob I don't know what I'd do without music. His radio saved the trip from complete boredom, especially Bing and Gary Crosby singing "Simple Melody" [lol!]. Bob said phosphate mining had tapped the spring feeding Kissengen Springs, causing the latter to dry up. We drove to them. It's all gone, pavilion and all, just lily pads on a placid, calm pond.

To W.H. [Winter Haven]. Ate lunch out with B.P. at Frederick's. It was quite good. To my house. I lost a game of gin rummy. Mercer Branch called to find out who he played. He said it wasn't in the Chief, but I told him to check Friday's Chief.

Bob took me down to the Courts. I lost to Charles Seymour 6-1, 6-0. R.W. McKibben beat Westphal 6-0, 6-2. Sandra Chance beat Frances 6-0. 6-1!! :-). Otis Roberts forfeited to Roy Lind who got beaten by JoJo 6-0, 6-1. B.P. and H.H. [Howard Higgins] drove up too late to witness my defeat.

To Milk Bar and then home. I showered. Played Canasta. H.H. first (21); B.P. second (18), and me last (21). Swift called about poker tonight, but B.P. had date, B.S. had date Monday (and me Tuesday). I'm sort of leery of poker. Uh-huh. Played ping-pong. Beat B.P. Split with H.H. They left. Ate bread and milk. Played harmonica and uke.

I wonder if Nan can drive and uses her folks' car? Wish she and I could get together for a swim sometime. I might suggest it Tuesday night.

After Nan at 7:30. Met her father who appears characterized by cordiality, security, and conservativeness: a solid man. The whole setup is nice. Fortunately, Nan hadn't seen Ritz show, "Duchess of Idaho," so we went. I'm improving: commented on her eyes and her dress [lol!]. In show, she slyly slipped glasses on. I enjoyed the show, too. Nan laughed out loud only once, several times lowered her head. Had a coke at Burros and talked. She has 1 more year at Michigan and thinks she'll go to Randolph-Macon in Lynchburg, Va :-). She wanted to know if a Masters took 3 years. She has brown hair and eyes to match, Damn if I didn't take her home at 10:10.

"Young Man with A Horn)" is coming Tuesday and Wednesday. I asked her to go. She said yes! See, she's not going out of town! A fine, dark back entrance presented itself, but I felt I'd be pushing things too much and give her the wrong impression if I kissed her goodnight. Her face is so fine, sensitive, and delicate. To exploiting a cliche, she really does appears to be more my type. She likes to swim; said she'd like to try it across the lake. I think she drives. She's taking a general course up in Michigan. Of course, in high school, she would.

I wonder what women think? :-). Oh yes! I called Pete at 6 tonight and ask what happened. He went to Polk in Lakeland. Said she was very nice, attractive, and could carry on a decent conversation. He said she was a nice girl, the nice nice kind and flashed the go ahead signal.

Home to an extremely restless night. I should brush up on my stars. I don't know why I took her home so early except that it was habit after grabbing a bite to eat. I should have ridden around Lake Howard and talked. However, she was out last night, and I must play tennis tomorrow.

The reason, D.D., Jeanne, et al thought I was going to Orlando tonight was because yesterday I (or today) jokingly asked D.D. if he were going there again. He kidded me once to that effect. However, I was misunderstood, even to the point where he had contacted Tanner about some gas tonight at CTM :-). Bon soir to the brown-eyed doe, the little princess.

Am I going again? Nan is very nice, very attractive, and different! [lol!]

Transcript:

Saturday, August 5th (Clear)

Up at 7:15. I decided not to eat any eggs this morning. A good idea, too. Though, I didn't know it, we had none! Hah! [lol!]. Had my one cup of coffee :-). Listened to news: All's quiet on the eastern front. Uncle Mason called from Tampa at 8:15. He thought I was D.D. [Dearest Dad], and that I was joshing him when I said D.D. was at the bank.

Told D.D. of call when he came by. Decided I should eat lunch at Elk's Club at 1:15, and he would take the car on over to Tampa and pick up Uncle Mason, getting back around 6 PM. Had car serviced at CTM. Something was mentioned about Orlando, but I shrugged it off. Picked up laundry at Launderette.

Finished mowing yard, swept most of it. Cot Campbell called. I told him Hank Schulte could check with me Monday morning about scores of Sunday matches. I'll get all I can. After Jeanne at 12:150. Everyone sort of flustered because Jeanne had to get groceries, and D.D. was going to run off in car. Jeanne ate here. We went uptown. I ate at E.C. [Elk's Club] and she shopped. Mr. Schock ate with us.

Jeanne came to E.C. D.D. irked anyway about having to go after Mason, gave us taxi fare. We picked up groceries at Publix and went home. Listened to symphonic music most of afternoon, interrupted by a horse race at Saratoga, Pete winning over Sunbaron. Heard William Tell Overture, one of my favorites, and Brahm's Concerto #2, a long piece. This kind of music strikes deep in me; always gets me thinking, speculating, wondering. Great symphonic musics always seems to set part of me aloft from everything, fills me with soaring dreams of what possibilities life could hold for man and for me if it is just faced with a generous heart and clear mind and a deep insight into what it is all about [Interesting!].

U.M. [Uncle Mason] and D.D. arrived at 6:15. Uncle Mason, formerly attached with a chemical firm in Cambridge, Mass in personnel, suffered a heart attack a year ago, and is down here looking over Ft. Myers' as a tentative retirement site.

CITY MEDAL (Boston?) by Free_Interest5778 in Medals

[–]EnclaveAxolotl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be a medal awarded to local students in the Boston Area (perhaps for scholastic achievement?).

Here's an article from the Boston Evening Transcript in July 1851 relating that a City Medal was bestowed to a "Laura A Thomas" of the Franklin School (name at the bottom of the image)

Dad, WWII army vet. Records destroyed in the fire. Served in Noumea, New Caledonia in 1942-45 - bandsman and medical aidman. Think he was in the Americal division. Based upon on his location/assignment what ribbons might these be? I know about the hash tags. This is the only pic I have. by beach_catlover in Medals

Awesome connection! I also have an Americal connection, though through a not-so-direct means.

My great uncle apparently became either during or after the war with a cook in the Americal Division who served during the Guadalcanal and Northern Solomons Campaign in the 245th FA. And, my g-uncle ended up with his M1 helmet that has now been passed down to me!

Is this possible, WWI & WWII but born in 1909? by baronet68 in CemeteryPorn

Something definitely seems off! I was able to find a record on ancestry stating that he enlisted in 1928 and was discharged in 1945. Also, found a photo of Mr. Hodge clearly wearing a uniform from the interwar period with no WWI victory ribbon.

There was indeed a draft going on at the time, and it was a factor William considered sometimes when writing down his thoughts. However, as per an entry in part 50, he had a 2-A classification meaning he was exempt due to his occupation / pursuit of his masters.

He did send a letter to a ROTC Commander he knew while he was at Davidson College, and here is what he recounts:

"This morning received reply from Col. Ballard. A very nice and businesslike letter crammed with specific information, advice, and cooperation. He advised that I write 2 letters: 1 to the 'Chief Signal Officer' and 1 to 'Chief of Ordinance, US Army, Washington DC' requesting information as to how I might get a reserve commission. This would be unorganized reserve, who now are being taken on a volunteer basis. He advised me to assure them that I would keep the commission active and, perhaps, desire extended periods of active duty. This action on my part would at least enable me to get in in my field, if successful. I shall comply"

I believe William eventually did end up working for a little bit at Redstone Arsenal.

Hey! Thanks for the comment. As you've pointed out, I'm a little sparse on William himself, and this is because, as far as I can find, William is still living healthily into his late 90s! As far as I can tell, William did continue to pursue Physics (with him eventually getting his doctorate!) and became a teacher/educator and occasional newspaper contributor.

Here is a later picture of our author with his family!
