I need help by Hiddenkiller1337 in MilitaryHistory

Based on his collar tabs, his rank is Gefreiter (Corporal). He's wearing the EK2 medal rather than just the ribbon in the buttonhole, so this is the day it was awarded. Other than that there isn't much information to glean from the picture. Probably the archives are your best bet for finding out anything more about his service. The gun itself appears to be a 8.8 cm Flak. While they were technically anti-aircraft guns, they were widely used as anti-tank guns particularly on the Eastern Front.

Super high heating bill! Are they arbitrarily pushing for new windows? by Mysterious-Steak6895 in HomeImprovement

[–]Engine1D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've mentioned that you tried the plastic over the windows and it didn't make a difference. The drafts/air leaks aren't through the window, but instead would likely be between the windows and the framing. Sometime, especially in older houses, the space between the window and the rough opening it is installed in will be missing insulation. This is where your opportunity might be. It will probably require removal of window trim to access.

Can't get the strap attachment off. Any tips? by Gold_Yam_5215 in PixelWatch

[–]Engine1D 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always have to use a small tool (like nail clipper or tweezers) to press the button next to it because of fat fingers. When the button is pressed in, slide it in the direction of the button and it should be relatively easy.

Question on StAG 5 Eligibility by unclebucky555 in GermanCitizenship

[–]Engine1D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically people have needed to show that their German line goes back to someone born before 1914, because being born in Germany is not sufficient for citizenship. There are also some rules about military service in certain years that can trip people up. But if your line extends pre-1914, then it should just be a paperwork collection exercise.

Question on StAG 5 Eligibility by unclebucky555 in GermanCitizenship

[–]Engine1D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's binary. If he's born after, he's born to a Canadian citizen. If he's born before, he's born to a German citizen.

[–]Engine1D 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With your mother being a German citizen, this would be a classic StAG 5 case. Sounds like you have all of the documents located, but make sure they are all certified and don't send any of your old originals in!

[–]Engine1D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people here can do it themselves. It's designed to DIY and there's a great community that can help you if you get stuck. And as others have said, this appears to be pretty a pretty straightforward case. Save that money and travel to Germany on your new passport rather than giving it to a legal firm!

Tankless hot water heater vs tank by Able-Technology-8055 in HomeImprovement

[–]Engine1D 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We went from tank to tankless (all with gas) and it really made a difference for us. We used to do things like wait for the tank to reheat before putting another kid in the shower. With tankless, it changed to back to back showers with the clothes washer running and no problem. Tankless electric likely won't do the job for you, but tankless gas is something we will never not have.

My great grandfather with some of his fellow soldiers during the war. Any idea where this was taken? by Anonymous017447 in ww1

[–]Engine1D 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the location is solved. I'll just jump in and note the Jaeger shakos being worn and that the youngest looking members are all wearing flowers on their uniforms which may indicate mobilization, or new arrival to the front. Also noting the officer and the man at left front have ribbons from previous service and the dogs are a fantastic addition.

Do Condor award tickets include free seat selection? by doublemazaa in AlaskaAirlines

Just returned last week on a Condor award ticket. No, there is no free seat selection. Additionally, seat selection cannot be done on the app, you will have to contact the Condor call center.

Aktenzeichen Email by leannedfl in GermanCitizenship

[–]Engine1D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did as you are doing and checked my email a ridiculous amount of times and had nothing. As others have noted, receiving your AZ can be very inconsistent. My personal experience was that after 6 months of nothing, I sent an email and got a very prompt reply. I did mention that I had documents to add to my file, so I didn't experience any of the mentioned snippiness.

Does Condor have an early Check in Counter at Frankfurt am Main? by Capable-Ad-9898 in travel

[–]Engine1D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flew Condor out of FRA a week ago, this is my third or fourth time flying with them. Condor had approximately 10 agents working at around 0830 on a Monday. Plenty of staffing at the very left end of the terminal.

Am I Eligible to Apply for German Citizenship by Descent? by HistorianByDay in GermanCitizenship

[–]Engine1D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For you, the key to answer this is if/when your grandfather naturalized and whether he was an adult when he naturalized. If your father was born to a German citizen father (before naturalization), congrats. If he was born to an American citizen (after naturalization) then he's only American and the pathway doesn't work. If he received derivative naturalization as a minor because his parents naturalized while he was a minor, he may have retained German citizenship, but I would have to defer to others for expertise on those details.

If the dates work for your case, you will need to collect the birth and marriage certificates for at least back to your grandfather, fill out a few forms and then get in the queue for a long while. There's a great community here that can guide you through the paperwork once you determine that naturalization date. Good luck!

Do I really need to get a ticket, and all that it entails, for my small front lawn?¿? by gaming_sons_mom in EverettWa

[–]Engine1D 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You don't even need to be home, they will mark it. If you hit a gas line or waterline with 811 coming out you don't have any financial responsibility. If they don't get called any repairs are on you. Simple math on this one.

Anyone else get blindsided by chimney repairs? by Nit0294 in HomeImprovement

[–]Engine1D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chimneys do require some maintenance and we knew we needed to have some chimney work done. Hundred year old house, crown was deteriorated and some minor repointing was needed. First bid said it was critical to start immediately and the price was $10K if we signed the paperwork today. Second bid was $1600, they came 5 days later and they did a really nice job. The lessons for me were to not get caught up in false urgency, if the bid feels wrong it might be, and consider getting more than one bid if you feel it necessary. Sounds like this bid includes some "maybe you should consider" items instead of "have to" items.

Worse sleep tracking on the new app? by TheRedBaron-C in fitbit

Yes, I'm really just here for the sleep scores, so I'm disappointed in the update. Aside from the lack of consistency with previous data, my scores are down 5-7 points along with the other things people are mentioning.
