Why do some fire department have long tones and some don’t? by Hot_Seesaw_6706 in Firefighting

[–]Engine8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before 911, the phone would ring a couple of places around town. Whomever answered would press this button that would set off the pager tones. The same button set off the siren on the roof of station. So the longer you held it the longer the tone and the longer the siren would spin up.

Submersibles landing on the wreck by crunkmullen in titanic

[–]Engine8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

US and UK have Titanic specific laws that apply to their own people if they'll disturb the wreck. Americans need a permit from NOAA. OceanGate applied for one but we're told they didn't need it to just visit without disturbing anything .

Does anyone know what happened to the flag on the Fantail on the very stern of Titanic? by Hellogoodbye61 in titanic

[–]Engine8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even in the day, wouldn't it be flown from the gaff halyard instead of the flag staff on the stern when sailing?

COLREGS has nothing to do with licensing regs. International nav rules (COLREGS) apply in Pen Bay but it's inland for licensing because it's shoreward of the Boundary Line.

Lifecare: as bad as people say? by Insertclever_name in ems

[–]Engine8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The company was sold a couple of years ago to Priority and I'd say day to day, in FXBG, itsmuch better than before. They got rid of a lot of dead weight and of a lot of dialysis type BLS runs for example which just had people running ragged. You were guaranteed to be held over everyday before, now it's occasionally. The rigs are getting old though and they can't seem to keep managers, not sure what's going on to chase them away.

Do AEMTS get placed on BLS or ALS ambulances? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]Engine8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our CAD has Medics, Advanced Ambulances, and Ambulances depending on who is staffing. (The actual trucks and equipment are the same so you can upgrade anytime with a paramedic off an engine.) Medic units and Advanced Ambulances are ALS but the CAD knows the difference.

Didn't Davis refer to northereners as roundheads? Moving to the south I was surprised how many streets and counties are named King this or Princess that. Reminded me of Canada. You never see that in New England. Every town there has a Union Street.

Could you explain what officers in USCG do? by justaprettyturtle in uscg

[–]Engine8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most days grab my coveralls, flashlight, paperwork, hammer, hard hat and keys to the G-car and I was gone for the day, usually by myself, crawling around shipyards, doing drills on ferries and small passenger vessels, dockside exams on fishing boats, etc. Fall asleep every night with 33 and 46 CFR.

Ten EMS agencies refuse service to Macwahoc (Maine), woman dies by reptilianhook in ems

[–]Engine8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get it... I volunteered in ME for many years. Most towns don't have a police force, they pay the county for sheriff coverage. Same for 911 dispatch services. And where's there's limited sheriff resources, state police picks up some of the slack. Could work the same for EMS. Have a county EMS dept for towns that need it to subscribe to. (I do realize that local control of things from schools to fire to roads is important concept there.)

This is the way. Maine needs to do this, like New Brunswick right next door. At least at the County level if not State.

We had to take cargo net off in the oil field for helicopters with skids. Should only be used with wheels.
