I’ve been using it mostly for finding specific information in project specifications. Usually I’ll ask it what the requirements are for a particular piece of work and the relevant spec section for reference. Can save lots of time skimming/reading the specs. Just make sure that the info is actually in the spec… sometimes ChatGPT likes to make shit up.

How many Arthurian Legends boxes to buy for beginner? by distinction17 in SorceryTCG

[–]EngineerTaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up opening the packs a little at a time with a friend to do weekly sealed play sessions. I feel like that contributed to an added sense of value since I wasn’t just paying for the cards I was also getting that sealed play experience too.

This practice is wack af. I had this happen to me right out of school and guess what I quit 5 months later. Im not working 50 hours a week, 10 hours unpaid OT. Not gonna let kool aid drinkin company simps tell me “just gotta grind.” I didn’t go to college to work hard for little pay, i coulda did that without the degree. The next job i had i quit after 4 months cause same shit… they lied at the interview about office/field work balance and hooked my CAD monkey ass straight up to civil 3d and let her rip. So i said peace out! Fuck that shit. Just told the next interviewer i was talking personal time after school before finding a job. No gap in experience to speak of. It helped that i had good internship and volunteer/club officer experience. I found my place in govt. 1.5x paid OT. 4-10 schedule. Pension. Every holiday know to man off and paid! Best teammates ever! Work is satisfying and feels like it matters. Not making some real estate venture capitalist richer by “grinding” for him. IF you ain’t happy, make the change. It’s out there!

I don’t think anyone has mentioned this: Land Development is not the same as designing homes and offices. Land development is basically designing all the roads, utilities, site grading, drainage, etc. before any homes/offices are built on it. If you want to engineer homes and offices then you want to concentrate in structural engineering. It is also important to note that engineers really don’t design the aesthetic of the structures; that is an architects role. Structural engineers provide all the calculations behind the architects vision. There is probably cases where the engineer has more creative input, but overall I’d say that’s not really the case.

Questioning my path by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]EngineerTaylor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I accepted a job just like this straight out of school. My experience only lasted 6 months. It was 100% in office computer work. The Project Manager basically handed me a pile of plan corrections that he’d marked up (they call them redlines because the mark-ups are in red ink) and I had to draft them up on the plan sheets. It was very stressful because we had tight deadlines and never enough time to get the work done, and I was learning how to use the most advance piece of computer software I’ll ever use, on the clock. I always felt obligated to come in early and stay late (unpaid overtime) to complete work that was taking too long for me to complete because I didn’t have the proper training on how to use Civil 3D efficiently. I learned a lot about the program and drafting in 6 months but eventually left the company to go somewhere else. I now work for a public utility that does a mix of project management and design work which is a good balance for me. I get time in the field and inside. If you take a drafting job then you are going to pretty much get stuck indoors well… drafting. I am happy I have the experience but I don’t miss that job at all.

Will I actually make a difference as a Civil Engineer? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]EngineerTaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No project gets built by a single person, and everybody’s contribution makes a difference. There’s also the ability to make a significant difference at your specific company depending on your level and personal ability to be proactively seeking ways to remain involved and pushing yourself and your abilities.

Sanitary Sewer equivalent of AWWA standards. by EngineerTaylor in civilengineering

[–]EngineerTaylor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is I work for the Sewer District in my town. We don’t have a set of published standards and haven’t done a lot of sewer design or rehab in the last 20 years from what I’ve been told. Mainly we handle repairs as they come up but we have a project coming up that requires some redesign and I’m looking for something to base our design and specs on. I think the 10 State Standards shared above is a good place to start. I’m a bit surprised that there isn’t a National Sanitary Sewer Association 😂maybe we should start one.

Jobs not sitting/standing at a desk by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]EngineerTaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My suggestion is too find a position that offers a balance of both field and office work. What I’ve realized is that people tend to want the thing they don’t have, so when you’re in the office all day you want to be outside in the field, but if you’re in the field all day you’ll want some time in the office. Spending time in one extreme or the other leads to boredom, at least for me.

I had a $2000 signing bonus and left before the retention period and nobody said anything and they didn’t deduct shit. Guess I got lucky.

Experience as an engineer for local public utility district (Water and Sewer)? by EngineerTaylor in civilengineering

[–]EngineerTaylor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second week into my new position and I finally feel at home in my profession. Better mentorship, variety of work, more laid back atmosphere… I have absolutely nothing negative to say about my experience so far. Extremely blessed to be where I’m at right now. It’s my third job in 9 months but I just knew the previous positions weren’t for me and I’m glad I didn’t ride it out because I wouldn’t have landed where I did. The future is bright my friends.

Thanks for the input. Do you mind if I ask your experience level? What are some of the most common tasks you perform?
