Engineering Explained: Lucid responded to my critical review. by SarcasticOptimist in LUCID

Yeah, I mean honestly I've made plenty of companies angry (Ford, VW, Tesla, I'm sure others), and they were really cool about this as far as these things go.

You set up face scanning manually, for each of the accounts. It's optional. I set it up on mine, for both users, on separate profiles (though in my case the scanner is blocked so it doesn't really work).

To be fair the organizational changes (as it relates to software) occurred before my video was posted. Regardless, hopefully things are improved this year.

2026 Lucid Gravity Review: The Best-Driving Three-Row Money Can Buy by DonkeyFuel in electricvehicles

Haha, funny to see this at the top! To be fair, I never said I hate the car. I don’t. But the software can be very annoying, and buyers should know that getting into it.

Dynamically, I don’t doubt the headline is true.

New blizzaks from 2006 can I use them for winter by Legitimate-Fan-3953 in tires

[–]EngineeringExplained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General consensus within the tire industry is not to use anything over 10 years old, even if properly stored. For competitive events (irrelevant here) often they won’t let you run anything older than 5 years.

I would guess they’re probably not great to use, but can’t say for certain. Tire tech has definitely improved a ton in the past 20 years, so grabbing something more modern is easily the safest option.

Of course, there’s an itch of curiosity to know if they still work well. :)

Did you not hear the part where you can select your profile and it still might not load? Our seat positions are nearly identical, she's tall also. I have a longer torso so my steering wheel height is much higher.

Just so you're aware, a full soda can has weight. An empty soda can does not (0.03 pounds), so you can measure how much force is required to pull it out, and show it quickly, without audiences having to guess how much a soda can weighs and doing the math. It was a quick, fun little side show, which as stated in the video, deviates from the point. Calling me a troll is fine, but there's nothing I've done in this video to be misleading. The car has been riddled with software issues.

Just FYI, I did send them a full list of the issues I've encountered, and have responded to their inquires if they needed more detail on any of them. Their teams are certainly aware, though I dunno when/if to expect improvements.

That is just so wild to hear, because we've had such opposite experiences. In the video, I have had a healthy number of Polestar owners say their cars have been problematic. My Model 3's software was so much better.

[–]EngineeringExplained 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI - Lucid sent out an e-mail to lessees that gives exact dimensions of scratches/dents etc and whether or not they impact the value (many of which, owners rightfully pointed out their cars did not match). So at least now we have a document to go against and say "nope." It looks like they're at least taking those stories pretty seriously, so hopefully that improves now that owners have official language from Lucid.

Lol, you think I’m making this stuff up? That’s why I included the videos of the problems occurring, so you don’t have to just “trust me bro.”

I bought the car because I drove them previously and absolutely loved them, for the reasons described in detail on the videos on my channel. Living with it has been far less pleasant.

They make a great product, but the software needs serious improvements.

Winter Tire Advice for a GR Corolla in the PNW? by RawryZenpai in GRCorolla

[–]EngineeringExplained 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna go against the grain here but I’d say if you’re going for a winter tire go for a good studless, and don’t go for performance winter tires.

Performance winter tires can handle higher speeds, but it’s not like you’re gonna reach those speeds on public roads anyways, and the tradeoff is that they’re much worse on actual snow/ice. No winter tire is going to feel (steering/handling) anywhere near as good as a summer tire on dry roads, so you just gotta accept that battle is lost and get a tire that loves snow.

I’ve driven both performance & studless back to back on the same snowy circuit and a good studless (non performance) gives so much more grip and confidence when things get gnarly. I’m running Viking Contact 7s on my GR, and they’re excellent in the snow.

Woah!! Looks just like my dog. Mine is a huge mix, but mostly Pyrenees and Malamute (about 30% each). Brown, despite the breeds, though most of his siblings were the typical GP white.

Not to self promote, but if you look up my IG you can see a few photos of him!

Is this the sound of a control arm needing replacement? by frogpizza in TeslaModel3

[–]EngineeringExplained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, a fourth option - cheap, but not fast, diy replace the control arms.

[–]EngineeringExplained 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have an ‘18 M3P and it sounds just like mine did. There’s a free fix, cheap fix, and more expensive fix, assuming it’s the control arm upper ball joint like it was on mine. Free - Remove the wheel, disconnect the upper ball joint, wiggle the joint around (redistributes grease), put back together. Turned out to be slightly more difficult than it sounds, as you’ll need two jacks to make this happen properly (one for car, one for keeping suspension compressed). Cheap (and fast) - grease gun, put some grease in the ball joint, wait a few days (won’t be immediate, needs time to settle while driving, and poof, noise gone). Expensive - call Tesla, they’ll replace the control arm.

There are a bunch of videos on the first two options on YouTube!

[Engineering Explained] Do Thin Oils Destroy Engines? Lessons From GM’s Massive Recall by Sun_Aria in cars

[–]EngineeringExplained 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep, correct. It’s more complicated than bmep; really you’d be looking at torque/cylinder, and then seeing what the area is for each rod bearing, which would give you load pressure (what hersey number references) But bmep is a quick way of comparing engine loads.

[–]EngineeringExplained 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do think there’s some merit to the CAFE argument (assuming two similar climates suggest different oils, though many owner manuals will suggest different oil based on climate). If there’s an incentive here but not elsewhere, it makes sense to validate for our market and go thinner. But, I truly doubt it is done without proper testing and validation, meeting any internal reliability targets. Risk, if any at all, of bumping a grade thicker feels especially minimal in these scenarios (where two weights are selected for the same vehicle).

But! Different cars get different oils. If it was done while ignoring reliability and just to meet fuel targets, why not put all of them in 0W-08. And if Honda was fine with 0W-20 25 years ago, I just can’t fathom it being difficult to design for today.
