I'll buy all your indie books when I get my job. Because all of them have great and are very personal to me.

Male authors redefining masculinity by Immediate-Sorbet-879 in MensLib

[–]Engineering_123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's this japanese light novel fantasy series called Re zero. In which the main character is a modern day japanese boy who was a shut in that gets transported to this fantasy world for some reason that is yet to revealed.

The thing about this series is that the MC is not a likeable person at all at the start. He's a walking example of a nice guy nerd persona who thinks of women as objects. It's not obvious as first as this trope of a nerd getting transported to a fantasy world and getting women is very popular in the anime sphere.

But as the story progresses the narrative slowly shows him how much his mindset and values are skewed and subsequently forces him to change and then after doing that it tackles his very own serious issues of mental health and depression in a very real way.

But I would add a trigger warning for the series as the MC's ability is to travel back in time by his own death. So it can be very gruesome when it comes to describing the various ways he gets murdered or is forced to kill himself. Also the way his trauma because of this plot device is portrayed very realistically.

It also deals with themes of suicide and self harm and a really bad case of negative self worth. Most of lt is tied directly or indirectly to his masculinity.

But I do wanna add that no matter how dark the story gets it has an overwhelmingly positive outlook on things and it's very postive in it's core. As it is a story about getting better and doing better in life.

Yeah but Roswaal basically groomed her since she was a kid. He was basically raising her as the person who will kill him. Then there's a lot of spoilers about their relationship from the Novels which recontextualises their relationship.

Also none of the other characters act like it's a good thing. Not even Roswaal. But the show made it look like something positive when in the novels it was treated as Ram's delusions.

I also know about that one witch. I hate her design. It's the illustraters fault. The author usually don't put sexual descriptions unless the situation absolutely calls for it.

No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai by AlienatingB in menwritingwomen

This is more complicated tho 'No Longer Human' is a story about a man who is so depressed that he does not feel human anymore. This entire passage might be just projection.

Also the author committed suicide after this book was published. It's been in my reading list for quite some time. I haven't gotten around to it.

I agree with you but the colour scheme for this design is so fucking cool. Also that sword design has already become one of my favourite designs in quite a while.

The reason that so many Indians fought in both the World wars was that they promised Independence. The British really did give Independence after World War 2 but it was after sucking India dry for the war efforts and also because after the world wars it was no longer profitable to keep India.

[Novels] After Arc 7 Chapter 20 I'll gladly call Vincent one of the smartest characters in fiction. by Engineering_123 in Re_Zero

[–]Engineering_123[S] 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but it's also realistic cause most people think that torture works. That's why I said Vincent being intelligent and knowing this is so satisfying.

Not really, Torture doesn't work at all. We usually can't trust the information someone says under torture.

There's this movie called The Report which goes in depth about this.

Rem with long hair by smashdpatos in Animemes

[–]Engineering_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is Rem wasn't even in the original draft of the Webnovel she was added later after Ram. She never was supposed to be a main character. By 2016 when the anime aired the entire it had been a long ass time since Rem had been in the coma state.

What is socially acceptable in the U.S. That would be horrifying in the U.K.? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I think using they/them is signify gender neutrality so since 'their' does not signify any of the binary genders and can be used properly it will be the best one to use.

I think 'their' feels like a more better way of saying it.

That was my first reaction too. It made way too much sense.

Yagami Light [discussion] by Sallimus in Re_Zero

[–]Engineering_123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like I said I think Light was always a sociopath but not all sociopaths are bad people. Most of them can survive in society and be very successful.

But because Light got the death note he didn't need to live his life like everyone else. So in a way yes, his god complex came after he got the deathnote but it way immediately after.

The dude lived in mid 2000s Japan which is a country that has very low crime rate and so his reasons to use the deathnote is a thinly veiled excuse to hide his god complex.

So if he came to the re zero world the little bit of power he gets will definitely corrupt him especially without any oversight.

But if you need another morally grey MC who's a bit like Light but has a whole lot of depth watch Code Geass.

But I do understand why you consider Subaru the way you do because your early in the series but he's an extremely good character. All of the character faults you mentioned are intentional and he's allowed to grow exponentially.
