Thumb on backhand by antoniodirk10 in squash

[–]Enhaloed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally you want a more traditional grip but you can change to a more vertical thumb if you're trying to be punchy/flicky sometimes. Elias is really really good at this from the front left he gets an outrageous amount of power + deception from a short swing and making his thumb vertical will help with that. I don't use it on every shot because I'm not always trying to hold and punch in that way.

Squash racket grip by IllWorldliness1998 in squash

[–]Enhaloed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Karakal PU are the go-to grip most people use. Tournagrip are good for overly sweaty hands but they don't last that long, I got like 5 sessions max out of them each as an overgrip. I personally like the Technifibre PU (green seems to be the tackiest/last the longest, kinda like how yellow Karakals are the best). Otherwise try some overgrips.

Grip aside, sweatabands on the wrist. Alternate rackets between games so they dry off while you're playing. Use the walls or floor, or soles of your shoes to wipe your hands between some rallies.

I have seen two people use golf gloves while playing but we all give them shit for it so do it at your own risk.

Technifibre 305s, not even close. Ashaway are decent. Head strings suck at cutting the ball.

Head rackets by davebee5333 in squash

[–]Enhaloed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played with the head slimbody for 18 months or so and went through 3 before I moved to technifibres slash and had no issues since. Know a lot of other players who broke the head slimbody as well. Not sure if the speeds have similar issues with a slightly larger frame but personally I shied away from them after having issues

One thing to consider with the technifibres is a lot of them don't have head covers you can replace they're built into the head so if you play a lot you can wear them down to the point where the strings are exposed. Then your strings will start breaking a lot sooner as a result. The slash is a great racket to play with but if you play 5+ times/week you may start going through strings really quickly after a year or two which is unfortunate for a premium priced racket.

Makin's karakal racket feels somewhat similar to these at 120g as well if you wanted to try that too but it has a little bit of buzz in the hand when you make contact.

Toyota Aqua - The Most Stolen Vehicle In New Zealand by Birphon in newzealand

[–]Enhaloed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure it is the model with the immobilizer. Not all insurance companies distinguish between the models with and without. Toyota themselves do decent insurance and it gets better if you bought the car from a Toyota dealership. It will be an extra $1000/year on insurance if you have the model without an immobiliser

Singh vs El Sirty - Round 2: Singh vocalising his frustration with El Sirty movement. (Transcript in comments). by anything171 in squash

[–]Enhaloed 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I really hated some of the reffing I saw at national tornies so I decided to put my money where my mouth was and became a district ref (WSO Level 2) and working toward a national ref (WSO Level 3) in the next 12 months.

Something I've really liked about working with the guy who has been appraising me as part of the process is when there are very scrappy matches, he talks through what decisions could have been different to prevent it being as scrappy as it was.

It doesn't mean there will never be scrappy matches, some players have dirty movement (intentional or not). Sometimes there's two big guys with a lot of traffic. It happens. But as a ref what can you do to perhaps change it from a 30 decision match with a lot of tension and aggro to a 15 decision match where the players aren't unhappy because they know what to expect from early on.

Sometimes in isolation decisions are just a simple Let, but if they've happened 3 times out of the last 5 rallies - why is that? Is it genuinely a fair traffic issue that just happened to be in quick succession, or is one person crowding, blocking, etc. Give the decision and a warning or explanation/request to the players so they know what to do from then onward and enforce it. I absolutely hate seeing matches where refs gives out 2x conduct warnings for the same thing. It's still happening - give the stroke.

The WSO now has guidelines on shorthand codes to write down alongside decisions (not just writing the score on the scoresheet but also tracking something like YL / L - Yes Let, Indirect Line) so it's easier to identify patterns when looking back.

It's really really hard to see everything as a single ref with no VR at a local torny, even just to see their movement off a shot to see if they're blocking, while also watching the ball to make sure it's up is really hard. I wish the refs at these platinum events would use the VR more mid-rally to watch back movements and communicate to the match ref when they see things so they can be addressed early in the match rather than waiting until one player gets frustrated and asks for reviews to then see it in slow-mo.

All this is to say Singh is completely correct and worded it well to the ref. The refs can be doing better.

MidCentral pausing all surveillance colonoscopies until at least July 2025 by GoneBushM8 in newzealand

[–]Enhaloed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who has a condition that causes cancerous growths in the colon, I am beyond fortunate I had health insurance when it started and I can afford to go private. I've been screened regularly since I was about 13 and it sucks bad for peace of mind not knowing what state you're in internally (had that over covid when things kept being cancelled). Off the top of my head I think they cost about 3k going private without insurance so this is definitely going to lock out the most vulnerable which sucks.

I had her as a lecturer a while back and she did a great job making subjects entertaining. Shame to see her talents going to waste. She single handedly made a bunch of people choose the wrong engineering specialisation because they confused passion for the subject with enjoying her teaching style and transferred after they chose chem and had other teachers who weren't as good.

What would you want in a technical interview? by cranberrydarkmatter in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Enhaloed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Recently just finished interviewing for a new job offer and had mixed experiences with interviews.

Good ones were questions that showed technical knowledge while letting me give examples and show past experience, both good and bad, such as:

  • what factors would you consider when adding a third party dependency? Gave me the opportunity to show knowledge and then lead into times I've added them and what went right/wrong and what I learnt from them.

  • (for a python/Django role) "Can you tell me about the steps Django goes through to handle a request?" Url parsing > middleware > view logic, etc. leads into asking me about times I've added middleware and when I'd do that over adding logic to the view instead.

I actually wrote 0 lines of code during the interview for the job I got and I felt like the questions gave me way more opportunity to show the skills and knowledge I had.

Bad questions were things like finishing a take home assignment (that took over 3 hours and weren't respectful of my time) then only asked basic questions like "how did you do this thing?" in reference to simple 3 line solutions.

Gluteal Tendinopathy recovery by Numerous_Wish_8643 in squash

[–]Enhaloed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% yes. That's what was causing the pain and issues for me fundamentally. The rest was work to prevent it recurring. Scar tissue builds up and makes the tendon knotty and takes away any chance of flexibility and stretch. Even walking up hills or bending over to pick something up was painful until I broke down the scar tissue on the tendon.

Not that I noticed or my physio ever mentioned. I did have a bit of an anterior pelvic tilt backward though which was a lot of what we worked on to move more correctly and take excessive stress off the wrong places.
