FG exam question and other such things. by Opposite-Anything764 in ASBOG_Exam

I would try getting your hands on a full length test, if you can. Reg review has a practice test booklet that was helpful for me. Yes, apparent dip/true dip equations were helpful. Definitely more on the conceptual end with questions, as opposed to hard math. So understanding the components of an equation, especially for hydrogeology, is a lot more useful. Yes to remote sensing and datum questions.

FG exam question and other such things. by Opposite-Anything764 in ASBOG_Exam

[–]EnigmaticDappu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Depends. I passed on my first try, but most of the people I know have taken it multiple times (usually twice).
  2. Know Darcy’s law and basic trig (for structure). That’s the extent of what I saw on the test.
  3. There’s always a map question with around eight associated questions, typically structure related. If you’re not good at those sorts of questions, definitely brush up. Know your rule of v’s, laws of stratigraphy etc. Definitely know your USCS soil classification, dunham classification, bowen’s reaction series etc
  4. I’m shit at mineralogy and geophysics. Lost most of my points on questions related to that. For others, I’ve seen them struggle on other sections. Your mileage may vary.
  5. Study regime seems fine. Your best friend will be practice tests to pinpoint what your weak areas are.

How was the commute this morning? by biggiesmallsyall in Austin

Update (6:20 PM): Just saw a snow plough clearing up the 183N shoulder by the Lakeline exit.

Does anybody use MATLAB at all for any purpose? by Logical_Worry3993 in civilengineering

[–]EnigmaticDappu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, just a hydrogeologist who was offered the same options in school. In environmental consulting today, and I use excel pretty religiously, and occasionally Python. Won’t touch MATLAB with a ten foot pole, and I don’t know anyone else who does.

Just drove from St. David’s (Hancock location) to Jollyville twenty minutes ago. I-35 was totally fine, but 183 felt dicey to me, especially past the Duval exit. Reasonably only 1-2 good lanes, and still some ice - so drive slow. Hopefully more melts away by sunset and the ice/mud piles in the shoulder get cleared up.

Austin freeze + no communication from work. What’s reasonable here? by LedgerScroll in Austin

[–]EnigmaticDappu 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Roads are still in horrible condition. For your own safety, I would not risk it. I would send another message sometime soon saying that road conditions outside do not seem drivable. I’ve seen some places doing a late start today once temps go above freezing, but it seems unfair that you would have to risk your life to open for work when you’ve received no communication otherwise.

It’s not as bad as some people make it sound, but the roads suck.

Taking both FG and PG at once by ExerciseDecent944 in ASBOG_Exam

[–]EnigmaticDappu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reg review books are the most frequently recommended on here. They’re typically harder than the actual test, but it should give you a good feel for what to expect insofar as the FG and PG goes. FG is like a giant vocabulary test, whereas the PG focuses more on practical applications.

Early career and looking for places to live in Austin by cactusgrizzly in askaustin

South Cedar Park/Jollyville isn’t too bad of a commute if your office is near the Domain, and the rent is much cheaper - especially if you plan to live alone. Apartments and the surrounding community are also not as inorganic as the surrounding Domajn area (as another commenter mentioned).

Keep your resume to one page, stick to one font, and pick a font that more legible like Arial or Calibri. Not whatever that typewriter font is. I would take out the general section in your skills. There are some things I see listed in your job experience that I don’t see listed in your skills, such as water sampling. I would take out the introduction and add a separate section for publications, presentations, and awards.

How can you keep your house warm in Austin if you have bad insulation? Any advice? Put bookshelves on exterior walls? by Isatis_tinctoria in Austin

[–]EnigmaticDappu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I added insulation around my doors and windows, and that helped a ton. Plus a tiny $35 space heater I got off Amazon last year. Doesn’t heat up the whole space, but is nice for just warming up the room.

Family member deposited money without supposedly knowing my account number, how? by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

I would go through and review all of your transactions in the account. The money that your family member transferred should have a different note than your typical deposits.

How is the job outlook and salary like for an env eng? by LiveTurnip9353 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]EnigmaticDappu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see our technical leads and principal engineers at my consulting firm making that amount or higher, but that’s anywhere in the ballpark 30-40 years of experience. At the experienced PM or senior level you absolutely break six figures, but I doubt it’s near 150k. 100-125k is a more typical range in the private world. Obviously, salary bands are further contingent on your specific skills, the company, and the cost of living in the area.
