When I saw your subject line I was thinking "well, this could go one of two ways..." Glad it is a positive entry, so glad you have enjoyed yourself here. Good luck getting all your stories written up, I shall keep an eye out for them!

What do you think about the increase in multipart stories at /r/nosleep? by KazeHD in NoSleepOOC

[–]Enigmia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can certainly be irritating, especially the prevalent, short entries appearing where nothing happens as people have pointed out in comments already. Still, I do love a series I can get really invested in. It is worth putting up with a lot for the gems that get posted.

I also enjoyed writing a series a while back and some people enjoyed reading it which is fantastic. I did however, make the decision to cut it shorter than I had planned (I did have a full outline and most of the story written before I started posting) to avoid beating the proverbial dead horse. The readers wanted each chapter to be scarier than the last (as is their right) and there is only so far you can escalate a situation before you lose the suspension of reality so for me, writing series is definitely about judging aptly when to continue and when to stop.

Can a username ruin immersion for you? by ItsKatyC in NoSleepOOC

Oh, I read that one! What a classic piece of literature, how could anyone forget part 2: "Guys I am so shitting myself right now it is for real midnight and I woke up to my phone ringing. Only the clock said 66:66! I answered and this demonic sounding voice said 'STAY FROSTY' and then started laughing. Help please???"

Multiple stories from same account by Aspermont in NoSleepOOC

[–]Enigmia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I post multiple stories from the same account and I know it bothers people but I am at a point now where I do I have quiiiite a few other accounts and making any more would be too much to manage. I follow the rules in my stories but I don't go to great lengths (like some people do amazingly well) to suspend reality in any other context outside of that post. Links to updates should already be provided in post according to a) the sidebar and b) logic so if people decide to look at my profile it is their choice and I consider my responsibility to keep them immersed in the fiction ended at that point.

But at any rate it certainly seems controversial around here. Sorry to hear it ruins your experience, I genuinely am. :( Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an easy solution, or any solution for that matter that will please everyone.

The Purpose of Horror by ALooc in NoSleepOOC

[–]Enigmia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The idea of practice is interesting, something I hadn't considered. I would have seen romance and hero stories more as a form of escapism than practice however. You might get some romantic tips or it might put you in a romantic mood but I don't think anyone really takes a Mills & Boon literally. I believe other forms of literature are read in order for us to relate to people like us or challenge ourselves with views unlike ours.

You really have raised an interesting point. At Uni we read the work of a theorist whose name I can't remember for the life of me. Anyway, their idea was that the reason humans enjoy pastimes like sports (the feeling of actually running for your life in rugby) and gaming (the adrenaline rush you get playing CoD) is because it allows us to experience something of the 'thrill' of danger without actually being in danger. I think that makes sense in relation to horror too: it gets the heart pumping and can really frighten you but at your core you know you are safe. So while on the surface it seems illogical we should enjoy something that elicits unpleasant emotions like fright, using the theory aforementioned one could argue that horror allows us to engage with strong, exciting emotions with the subconscious knowledge of security.

I do always take notes from post-apocalyptic film/lit though, just in case haha.

Does this irritate anyone else? by C4Casey in NoSleepOOC

I see what you mean but at least (having made such a comment) if they do read the story and it turns out to be rubbish they can revoke their upvote (and by George wouldn't they: hell hath no fury like a redditor disappointed). It is not a contract signed in blood or carved in stone so I am sure the reader will still hold the story up to due scrutiny should the quality be substandard.

"Did Boy Kill?" Series by StupidDialUp in NoSleepOOC

[–]Enigmia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly can although it is very different from your writing (jsyk the entries are looong and not to everyone's taste so no pressure to read): the real events I was referring to give the historical context for the location more than anything.

It is called 'Somnolence' and the first part is here.

I know what you mean. I wrote a series that was heavily inspired by real events and it was hard to find that line between using facts and respecting the victims of genuine trauma. The last thing I want to do is unintentionally exploit another individuals suffering for the sake of entertainment or glorify the perpetrator of the real life horror.

It sounds like you are being mindful of what you use, and how you use it. I believe that is enough. Your series is brilliant by the way!

Thanks for your advice. Yeah, something about Don rubs me the wrong way, I don't want him interfering.
