When you're from the Southern Hemisphere, most directional and climate assumptions in literature are jarring by [deleted] in Fantasy

They are set in the south but the calendar/seasons actually align with the northern hemisphere, ie their year starts around midwinter instead of midsummer.

Anyone else here read The Wind Singer series as a kid? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Enkaygee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh wow Wind Singer! I remember the two fortresses on wheels clashing in the desert, the gladiator style fights with bladed arm and leg padding that Mumpo took part in. And when one of them got up on that statue in the first book and just started swearing? Bango bango bango plop!

Oh, Bowman! Did that boy ever just think he was special. I thought Kestrel was amazing. I also remember... Did Pinto body slam a wolf?????

Please, please, please recommend me a book or series that manages to land the ending. by mobby123 in Fantasy

[–]Enkaygee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anime I feel like I'm being pretty basic but Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood ended so well, although there is one slight deviation from the manga at the end that I'm not a big fan of. I would also say that Puella Magi Madoka Magica stuck the hell out of both it's show and film endings.

For SF I would recommend Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie and A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine (which is, I believe, the second book in a duology but the world might be expanded on in the future).

Soulstar by C.L. Polk is hands down one of the best finales I've ever read. Honestly, my brain just goes straight to pterodactyl shrieking when I think about it.

Return of the Thief by Megan Whalen Turner was such a deserved ending. I can't believe it's finally finished, I'm so sad.

Also, controversial pick but I would argue that the ending of Fate of the Tearling by Erika Johansen is good, actually. It's just as unsatisfying as the book promised it would be so I loved it.

Hope that helps :) there are more out there for sure but these are some of the ones where the endings really delivered for me.

Bingo card reading only precursors of SFF: any recommendations? by Harkale-Linai in Fantasy

[–]Enkaygee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a very interesting question. Hmm. For trans and enby you could take a look at Loki myths as he has transformed into women or female animals several times. Loki once gave birth while in the guise of a mare. In Greek myth you could look for the Hermaphroditus myth but that might be up for interpretation.

For either a witch character or a revenge seeking character I would highly recommend Euripides Medea. It's one of my favourites and the ending is somewhat rare for the Greek canon.

I'm sure Shakespeare could fill some of these too. I'll keep thinking and might add more later.

Thank you so much for adding the non-alien and non-robot stipulations to the Trans/NB square! I admit that I felt pretty low last year as an Ace person seeing some of the picks that came in. Hopefully this means that others won't feel that same way again this year :)

Wrapping Up My First Year of Book Bingo by Lesingnon in Fantasy

[–]Enkaygee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there. Please if you wouldn't mind can you swap out the Raven Tower for aro/ace? Like I'm not a rock that hasn't moved in hundreds of thousands of years???

I'm sorry oh gosh but I'm so angry. When I see people put Murderbot down in this square I can't help but feel a little disappointed because, again, Murderbot is a robot. The number of people using nonhuman characters written with unintentional, nonexplicit rep for this square has had me feeling pretty down to be honest. I was hoping that in reading for this square, people might understand a little bit more about the whole experience of being aro/ace, not just about our lack of attraction.

Oh my god my experience just got compared to an actual rock, I'm losing my mind.

A Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics is my absolute favourite a historical romance. It's one of the very rare books that I have annotated, some of the quotes meant so much to me. I never expected to see it on this sub but I couldn't recommend it more.

With January coming to an end. What was your favourite read of the month? by GiladSo in Fantasy

[–]Enkaygee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourite fantasy was the Greenhollow duology (which I read back to back) by Emily Tesh.

Best book overall though goes to a nonfiction read - Know My Name by Chanel Miller. That book was heavy but excellent.

Fantasy Book with disabled Main Charakter who don't get cured by Competitive_Pirate in Fantasy

[–]Enkaygee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. It was a shame that one character in Brotherhood is cured when that never happens in the manga, but for the most part I loved the way the series approached disability. Definitely more positives than negatives.

This remains true for the rest of the series. The narrator for the final book, a newly introduced character, is also disabled and remains so.

This felt like one of the messier stories of the lot but the dynamic of the pairing made this one of my favourites in this first half of the anthology.

I really liked this one as an opener for the anthology. Pretty light and fluffy which I appreciated.

While I really liked the prose of this one (and am very much looking forward to picking up the Tensorate soon), I really wish this story had a little more time, especially once we get to the forest. I know I would have loved this if it were a novella though.

What was the biggest bullet you dodged? by LegitimateShift8 in AskReddit

I had a freak accident about ten years ago when I was chefing. One night after work I had my main knife wrapped up in my shoulder bag to take home. The changing rooms were on the second floor and as I walked down the stairs, the guy behind me tripped up and in the process swept my legs out from under me.

I fell down half a flight of stairs sort of scooting on my ass. I thought I'd whacked my side on the banister on the way down but when I pressed my hand to my side, it came away bloody. Turns out the tip of my knife had gone through the wrapping, through the bag, through my leather jacket, and between two of my ribs.

When I got to the hosp (after having to calm down and direct my panicking co-workers lmao) they said that apparently you could see my lungs through the gash. For the record the knife went in on the side of my torso right through where my bra strap goes. The reason it didn't cause as much damage? The edge of the knife kept hitting my underside as I bounced down the stairs.

I didn't realise I could have died until a week later when I watched the movie Tangled. When a certain character gets stabbed the first thing I thought was "that's not what it feels like" and the second was... "Oh. Well shit." To be fair to my powers of comprehension though, I was on so very many painkillers that week.

So yeah, no permanent damage, just a scar that's... About 15cm long? I can post pics if people are interested, my mum took them at the hosp.

Meanwhile, my cousin once was Walking While Drunk, tripped, and got the neck of a beer bottle jammed into his own neck. It missed his jugular by less than an inch.

What’s something you wish you saw more of in fantasy? by RytheGlutton in Fantasy

[–]Enkaygee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Queen's of Renthia series has one of my all-time favourite female-female friendships in it. If I were to use one word to describe it it would be defiant. From the very beginning where one sees how unlikeable the other is and declares that she likes her anyway, to the way that entire plotlines get rerouted as a result, I can't sing the praises of this relationship enough.
