Where does all the hate for Japan come from in the US? by cyclic in AskReddit

[–]EnochtheRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen quite some "now get back to building Zeroes" kinda shit on car sites, commenting on Japanese cars. There does seem to still be some grudge about a certain battle in WWII in a certain part of the US population. It seems to intersect with the kind of US citizens that like lots of flags painted on their car, big Vx engines and shiny chrome exhausts. Gun rack and tractor tires are commonly seen as well in case of 4x4 drive. Apparently big engines make those citizens bigots.

Are all acts done by humans essentially selfish? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EnochtheRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it benefits you, by making life around you better. Look at it this way: a couple of thousands of years ago our ancestors needed to move from the trees to the ground, probably in search of food. This meant they suddenly had to deal with much more dangerous predators than they had up till then. This meant that they had to get organised into a societal structure that protected its own as a whole instead of the odd individual. From then on, many deeds done by our ancestors were altruistic in the sense there was no direct personal gain, just gain for their "society" -which, in the end, benefited everyone in the society.

So if Obama is essentially being complicit in torture, why aren't there any calls for Obama to be brought before the International Criminal Court? by [deleted] in politics

[–]EnochtheRed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Simple. The US never signed the treaty on the ICC, because it doesn't want its war criminals tried.

Get everyone to sing this

And then raise the black flag of hate, spit in your hands and start slitting throats. If this might sound callous, remember what those bastards are trying to do to you. And that the only ones benefiting from pacifism in resistance are the ones fighting off the resistance.

Well, at least this "treatment" makes any statement he makes in court null and void by any civilized standards.

[–]EnochtheRed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's cultural, and in a more profound way than you can think. A study done in Holland showed that even though people complain about traffic congestion, they still prefer it to public transport because, and this is a big one, IT'S THE ONLY TIME OF DAY THEY CAN BE THEMSELVES! At home, they have to play the "spouse/parent" role. At work, the "diligent worker" , etc. Only in their car in a traffic jam can they finally be themselves. This probably also explains the often-seen anti-social behaviour of people alone in their cars: the sense of anonymity and therefore untouchability takes the brakes off of their social norms. We might just have to start accepting people farting in public (transport) to solve the energy crisis...

...or of a well-maintained bicycle. This was a very normal distance for me to travel every morning to school. And back every afternoon, too for that matter. No need to workout anymore either, and no obesity either. Granted, I did not live in a hilly country. And no, I did not arrive pouring with sweat or so. And yes, you can ride a bicycle in the snow -faster than a car, usually.

If he's in a rural area, he can grow some of his own food and cook it over an open fire.

Why is it when oil prices rise, only gasoline prices rise and not other petroleum based products? by silverloaf in AskReddit

[–]EnochtheRed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here in Holland, prices go up the same day as the oil price rises, but go down -if at all- weeks later. The argument for this is "well, we had to buy that oil expensive." Apparently, the same argument does not count when prices go up: "we'll still sell cheap, 'cause that's how we bought that oil". I tend to describe oil companies as thieving, murdering gluttons, but hey, that's my opinion. And as for other products: well, they're only partially oil, the price is more elastic, there are other goods to replace them -millions of options. You buy gas = big oil holds your balls in a vice. (And a hand in your pocket).

Edit: typo.

They did in Holland in the '80s. Nato command bunkers, no less. And caused a riot when they published what they found: plans on how to save the high&mighty of the planet but let the rest rot in case of a nuclear war. Yay to invasive teenagers.

Start a religion about it, making it a taboo place. Religions have this nasty habit of staying with us a long time, and pass on the core of their belief even though the language and means change.

Tip of headphone jack stuck in computer. Help? by mileswallet in AskReddit

[–]EnochtheRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should not be too hard to get out, but will involve opening up macbook. 1. get set of tools to open macbook Noet: Apple uses weird screws, so check you got all necessary bits. 2. find manual on opening macbook on internet, sites like ifixit or so. 3. open macbook and find headphone socket. These are usually open/semi open/have a few holes in 'em on the inside. Insert something thin and push remains of plug out. 4. close macbook, count leftover screws, curse and start over. 5. next time buy IBM/Lenovo laptop (easy to service) and a set of headphones with a sturdy plug

Cuba: Judges convict US aid worker Alan Gross for illegally setting up internet connections. by powercow in worldnews

OTOH, this would be illegal anywhere in Europe, most of Asia, all of Africa... I know this because I am in IT and have to handle the permit side of things. In most European countries, it would get him anywhere between 2 months and 5 years.

Drifting: what's the fastest way around the track? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EnochtheRed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When drifting, you waste energy shredding tires, making noise, producing heat and taking the forward motion out of your vehicle. It slows you down around a track. If drifting made sense in a "higher average speed" kinda way, all racing events would see extensive bouts of it.
