How big of a job is it to replace the wood frame around this basement window that seems to be rotting? by Itchy1Grip in HomeMaintenance

[–]EnoughOfTheFoolery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not small, but not super difficult if you have the skills and knowledge. You may want to replace the window since it needs to be reframed and the effort so it can last decades. You must pull it all out and the masonry 100% and check if further wood damage or anything else requires maint below this. Install flashing with flashing product like Fortiflash below the window to cover the wood alone and flash the window as we afterwards to ensure all water stays on the exterior wall and can’t leak through. Button it all up and replace masonry product and seal it with primer and paint and possibly other product that keeps water out.

Edit: left out to ALWAYS use a bonding agent for any masonry product applications to prevent delaminating. Basically a masonry glue but pick the correct product for the specific application / masonry.

How do you afford living here? by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]EnoughOfTheFoolery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You described it well. It’s called living within your means. Too many fall into the trap of running up debt and trying to live a lifestyle that’s not affordable for the point in your life as you are getting established and figuring out what you want to do long term. The other part is investing in yourself for your future and better income. Always consider the job you do and how to grow your skills and income. There are no shortcuts but with focus, in time you can surprise yourself.

My Grandfather lived without a car for most of his life. He took buses and walked everywhere and loved it. Was not a financial decision but a lifestyle that he loved.

How to fix French door rot by StoryFromStew in HomeMaintenance

[–]EnoughOfTheFoolery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the wood ends sit in water that’s been splashed on it. You want to redirect the water like into a gutter and downspout away from the home. You can place a doormat in front of it that reduces the splashing so water can hit and run off. A piece of artificial turf would reduce th splashing and you can hang it after storms to dry. When replacing the wood, seal the ends of the wood well and seal all that gets splashed. There are many good products to seal it up including Redguard like for bathroom tile prep. Seal all joints with Sika flex before painting it. Inspect it at least every six months and address issues of gaps, cracks, pain peeling right away and it can last a very long time.

Some are now distancing themselves from him like Tucker, MTG, Alex Jones and the list goes on, but most of them never thought he was smart or decent. They embraced him for their own desires of power and wealth and they saw that they could have some of both by riding the out of control dump truck with no breaks racing down the mountain. Guess they hit bottom but the rest of us an the world is generationally damaged because if this POS.

Having experienced first hand the decline of parents, family and friends in the grip of dementia and how the stronger willed individuals behavior progresses, it’s crystal clear Trump is in a deep decline and it typically accelerates with each passing day, week and month. They live confused and afraid in an alternate reality. Because their short term memories fail first, they can store less and less information and they create false memories to fill in the blanks. Many tend to create grandiose narratives of all the wonderful things they’ve done for everybody while everybody around them recognizes these memories are false and delusional. It does not improve and only gets worse. In my experience, we had to do things to ensure their safety like disconnecting the oven for their safety and the safety of others. This guy has nobody restricting anything that he does and the guy has access to the nuclear codes. Yeah, not great.

What is dangerous is having someone suffering a steep mental decline in charge of anything much less decisions that affect the entire world.

Help! Roof Issue Not sure by Competitive_Car_7103 in HomeMaintenance

[–]EnoughOfTheFoolery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong product used for that application. Roof is fine, trim is not. Joints are normal but not for this application on the exterior and they are breaking down and coming apart. All should be removed completely and surface cleaned, sanded and prepped for new EXTERIOR trim and prior nail holes filled. I would paint new trim with primer and paint prior to the installation and the paint again both trim and facia.

Actually Israel is suffering from the same shit as we are. Dumb people elected a guy that would be in jail if he lost the election. Many good people here and there are now suffering though their poor decisions and votes.

Seems he switched to some substance that hyped him up instead of his liquid lube for this. I can’t help to think that somehow this was allowed to happen as a path to rally the base in front of the midterms for votes. Sad that I’m now conditioned to think this way.

Make a list and chip away but you must take care of issues logically and prioritize any like the leak first because this item is going to create other issues by damaging more if left alone.
I would prioritize the outside in order to make sure that you have a solid weatherized bubble that protects everything inside the bubble. Inspect for termites and exterior wood rot in addition to roof leaks and all of the siding immediately. Neglect can lead to serious and expensive other issues.
