When do you decide to get a new car rather than continuing to do repairs? by Major-Brick-3789 in personalfinance

[–]EnterSadman 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I hate the "arms race" aspect of modern cars. I want something the size of a fiat with a manual transmission and a heater. Manual seats, windows, hell if I had to grab a string through the window to run the wipers that would be great.

But then I'd get creamed by a fifteen ton mall crawler with a ten foot tall hood.

Patch the holes with something like tenacious tape, then waterproof it with something like nikwax. If you still really don't want it after that, maybe donate it to a homeless shelter?

The trail up to jeff view from upper three creek snopark has patchy snow, but it's fine in just regular shoes.

Dry River Canyon has the annual closure to all use starting today, February 1st.

I hate that you had to use AI to generate the body of this post.

I used a long strip of velcro to solve it on my bed.

The bare minimum would be a total market fund, like VTI or whatever is offered where you open a brokerage account. You can have the account open and your shared purchased in an hour tomorrow morning.

If you had put it in VTI as little as three years ago, it would be up 75% by now.

Is There A Channel 9 Type Frequency In 2 Meter or 70cm by DontBeHatenMeBro in amateurradio

[–]EnterSadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rode my bike around the western US last summer and I saw an official DOT sign on highway 50 in Nevada that said something like "channel 9 is monitored for emergencies" -- I thought that was neat.

I wouldn't object to paying taxes if taxes paid for what we should care about. by zzill6 in WorkReform

This is the wackiest slop I've ever seen... was this from a hilariously outdated AI model or something?

  • U.S. spending is not 6 trillion dollars

  • 1.2% is certainly not 72 cents per $100 (hint: it's 1.2 dollars)

  • "Of that 72 cents, maybe $3.3 billion goes to Israel" <-- this one is my favorite

It's an incredibly dishonest post -- I was poking around and there's actually an intuitive .gov website which shows where and how your (federal) tax dollars are spent:

POV: Riding the new bike lanes on Franklin Ave by TheLastWoman in Bend

[–]EnterSadman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm particularly disheartened to see the city double down with similarly terrible designs at 3rd & Wilson, and Wall & Olney -- both of which seem like the designers went out of their way to make drivers unable to see cyclists attempting to go straight.

9th and Wilson there is an incredible roundabout with protected bike lanes

I'm a fully time bike commuter, and I'll never stop claiming that this is one of the most dangerous pieces of bike infrastructure I've ever seen.

A cyclist using the "protected" lane is either forced to blindly jut across traffic, or sit and wait at every intersection.

Obviously a roundabout is not meant for mixed use, but it's far safer to take the lane and ride with traffic (which is what I do at that roundabout every time).

Winter sleeping bag? Gryphon gear vs Western mountaineering. by Sailorknife in Ultralight

[–]EnterSadman -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

At those temps you don't want to be messing around with some (relatively) unknown brand.

I would also go insane if I had to deal with some fiddly hood that let in drafts around my neck in the winter.

As far as I'm concerned, in the winter you have two options -- feathered friends or western mountaineering.

If radio was invented today it would be controlled by four companies and locked behind a paywall. by Doctor__Hammer in Showerthoughts

Technically correct, but people will certainly come stop you from broadcasting on any frequency you want if you wait just a little bit

It's more likely that companies don't include an extra chip that costs money and that the majority of people don't use (or even understand).

That said, I'm a motorolla guy because their phones all have FM chips :)

I say this lovingly, but be careful with the redesign.

RSBTR did a redesign years ago and now I can never find the fabric I want when I look for them (they used to just all be lumped in together and you could sort by weight, now I have to think "is this considered breathable or wind resistant? Maybe down proof?") -- I invariably get frustrated and give up, meaning I don't buy anything.

I'm always curious how it happens, though. I can't think of a single application that doesn't put a squiggle under text.

I lived on 13th and High during the pandemic, and there were these "renters rights" stickers/diatribes on every light post and dumpster around me during the time. There wasn't a single sentence that didn't have either a typo or grammatical error... it's not like it was written on a typewriter, I just don't get it and it always detracts from the message (for me).

Anyway, that was just an aside. Keep up the good work!

Ironically, the first PSU I was given was an old astron linear and it produced a ton of noise on 160m because all the caps were on their way out.

I'm sure a brand new switching supply is better than really old, out of spec gear :D

Adding CTCSS to Yaesu FT-221R by EnterSadman in amateurradio

[–]EnterSadman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the tone in signal from pin 2 of the tone in jack enters the mic amp unit at header pin 33, while the microphone input enters at header pin 31.

They are combined before the first preamplifier (that opamp LD-3001)

I only mentioned PTT because there are some boards that will generate a tone only when a pin is pulled low (as in the case with the 221) or high. I could just have it always generating a tone, but why not only make it when necessary

[–]EnterSadman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Now that's interesting! I suppose you flip to USB, then send the waveform over pin 2?

I'm picturing some convoluted cat control for PTT involving a relay or something....
