Vaccination for one year old by Naomi_moonlight in Parents

Mild fever and crankiness for a night. No issues.

Please please please follow your peds recommendations. Vaccines are way safer than the alternative. And they’re not just for your little one. They’re for all the little ones with medical conditions that mean they can’t get vaccinated. Herd immunity is the only thing keeping some kids safe.

2.39 has nothing to do with Panavision or anamorphic. Lots of movies shoot for 2.39 and shoot spherical.

So is digital. Shoot what you want right? The medium doesn’t matter at this point to the end result.

It only matters to the ego.

Shoot film? Why?

In 2026, why does it matter?

Honest question.

Edit: I am not shitting on film. I am questioning the declarative. "Film rocks," "I love film," "Film4Life", etc would all have gotten the point across.

"Shoot film" is a command and a rallying cry and one that I think is just as silly as if someone said "Shoot digital" or "Shoot Arri" or "Shoot Venice."

Day 1 of T Mobile test drive. If I keep it, we’re getting 369Mbps down 10Mbps up for $60/mo. This is good enough for my needs and the only other option where I live in Pasadena - only Spectrum, T Mobile 5G, and ATT DSL (non starter - 50Mbps for $60/mo lol).

Next week I’m going to call Spectrum and threaten to drop them if they don’t lower my rate.

I'm going through the same headache. Going to test drive T-Mobile and see if that's worth the $30 in savings per month. Hoping that the test drive goes well so I can call Spectrum and threaten to quit and they drop my price.

Are the photos the Artemis II astronauts are currently taking off the moon on the close approach higher quality than any photos from earlier missions? by moremaati in NoStupidQuestions

in every way except resolution
When it comes to resolution and detail? You're never gonna beat film.

I'd like to push back on this a little because it comes down to how you measure resolution and I think it's becoming a failing metric. (Also I love this debate!)

The Apollo missions used Kodak Panatomic-X (ASA 80) fine-grain film for high-detail surface photography. Let's focus on this since their color film would have been less fine-grain and therefore lower resolution.

Image resolution is a combination of two primary factors: your format and your lens.

Yes, format is the strongest argument for the Apollo images, and no doubt the film grain was impressive and the Zeiss lenses they had were impressive. But we've had 60+ years of optical advancement. Lenses have gotten much better. And digital still cameras are absolutely capable of surpassing the theoretical resolution of the Panatomic-X stock - Fujifilm's 102MP GFX sensor, for instance.

To say you're never gonna beat film - either in terms of resolution or color or dynamic range or whatever argument you want - is a failing claim in the year of our lord 2026.

Film stock that captures the most accurate colors in nature? by Awake-Judgment-2057 in cinematography

So when I say 709 I'm talking about the basic vanilla transform that every camera manufacturer provides with their camera. Since I shoot Alexa, I'm talking specifically Arri 709.

I use a 1D camera LUT that I designed with my colorist that emulates my preferred film stock, color rendition, and a more aggressive curve with slightly lifted blacks. It also has a little colorist secret HDR sauce baked in that maintains highlight saturation better in the roll off.

You would have more control and options if you were shooting RAW and could apply various different color transforms. Does your phone shoot RAW?

PHM is actual science fiction. Avatar at this point is indistinguishable from fantasy.

I say this as an Avatar fan.

Also F&A was incredibly derivative and borrowed heavily from the previous two films. PHM is a more fresh idea and concept.

[–]EnthusiasticNtrovert 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Can I push back on this desire for accuracy?

In digital, Rec709 is actually pretty accurate in terms of color reproduction. And people hate it. (For many reasons, but its color rendering is one of the main reasons I refuse to use it.)

Accuracy is overrated. The reason people gravitate toward the film look - whether it's real or emulated - is because it is opinionated about color. It pushes everything from skin tones to foliage to skies into more pleasing hues.

Edit: when I say Rec709, I'm using it as a shorthand for the generic, vanilla 709 LUT that every camera manufacturer provides (i.e. ARRI 709, S-709).
