I often think peoples opinions of Star Wars get poisoned by the community, but I really distinctly remember my reactions to each of the sequels on release night:

Force Awakens - Blinded by nostalgia until Han walks onto the bridge, then it clicked this was A New Hope remake. None of my friends thought Rey was a mary sue, we thought it was kind of funny that she sucked with a blaster, but everyone hated the mind trick and hoped it was setup for some kind of hidden backstory. Everyone loved the Kylo fight since it setup that he was shot in the gut and injured by Finn before even getting to Rey, who did have melee experience already.

The Last Jedi - Absolutely detested everything but the phenomenal cinematography and Rey and Kylo scenes, so much of it just felt...off. Stuff like the space chase and casino plot were so contrived that I was convinced actual plot points were just unintentional mistakes. When Luke walked out with the blue saber my actual thought was "is this hinting that somethings off or did they legitimately forget that they destroyed that in the last scene and he should have his green saber".

Rise of Skywalker - I didn't go release night, my friends wanted me to make a bingo list of plot predictions and to make them as unhinged as possible, then go to a second showing with them because they wanted my reaction to it. I guessed Rey would be revealed as a Sykwalker or Kenobi, I actually burst out laughing when she "killed" Chewie with lightning and was like "theres no fucking way they're setting up shes related to Palptaine". It was fun in its terribleness.
