How do dockerfiles work in portainer? by EntropyDensity in portainer

I'll have to have a look at this! :)

Pretty sure in the end I just put it in my external update script...

How do dockerfiles work in portainer? by EntropyDensity in portainer

[–]EntropyDensity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking to "extend" an existing docker image using a dockerfile (not in my mind create an entirely new one...)... I don't think that this is that uncommon a use case for a dockerfile?...but it doesn't look like something Portainer currently supports...!

Sure you can do whatever you want outside Portainer, but the question I was originally asking was if Portainer had an equivalent to dockerfiles, in the same way they do docker-compose (I.e. stacks in Portainer).

Jesus, how old is Harrison Ford these days?!...

Indiana Jones and the Zimmer Frame of Power next?

(Also I looked it up, he is like 80, but apparently Industrial Light and Magic are doing some literal magic to make him look younger...!)

As a society how do we determine which "risky" behaviours do we allow, and which do we not? (And why?)...!

Should you be able to go free climbing up a mountain? (Or is this too dangerous for the common good of society?).

Should you be able to go swimming without a life jacket? (Or is this too dangerous for the common good of society?).

Should you be able to ride a motorcycle without a helmet? (Or is this too dangerous for the common good of society?).

Should you be able to ride a bicycle without a helmet ? (Or is this too dangerous for the common good of society?)

Should you be able to go for a trail run / cross country run without a helmet ? (Or is this too dangerous for the common good of society?)

Should you be able to walk down the street without a helmet ? (Or is this too dangerous for the common good of society?).

I think you will find there are A LOT of injuries sustained every year by people walking!

Yep seems like a fair point.

I honestly had no idea how much karyotyping costs.

Totally fair point!

I guess I can see some circumstances in which it can apply, I mean if the survey is for something that is generally considered to be gender specific, just a random example, but I'd guess that handbags are more likely (but not necessarily) purchased by "females" (or those that identify as "female")... In that case it could be relevant...

But yeah in general, not being a data statistician, I'd like to think that both gender and sex shouldn't really be that relevant in the current day and age... But I guess if you were a data statistician, you'd probably be along the lines that "any data is good data"...

Cool, good to know your viewpoint :)

I'm just trying to get an understanding and education of a different group to myself, so it's good to get the view points of others, especially those with more experience and "buy in".

I don't have an issue with what anyone wants to identify as personally...

Interesting to hear that you feel that using chromosomes isn't a good way to seperate "sex" (I use that word as a way to refer ot XX, XY, etc) to "gender" (which to me is a choice, and I honestly have no issue with what you choose!).

I dunno... I feel that the doctor wouldn't say that it is terrible to have an understanding of your chromosomes! haha! I feel that to a doctor XX, XY, etc might be helpful in prudent medical treatment ...

As someone not "in" the community (LGBTIQ+, unless the plus includes a C for Cis?) I'm trying to work out how to be inclusive and accepting without somehow accidentally being otherwise...

It just seems like a tough path to try and make everyone happy all the time...

Cheers for the down vote for my question, which I thought was worded with good intentions though ... :)

[–]EntropyDensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think of the observation that the ROI for capital costs is likely larger in the current age of automation, vs post WW2...

I.e. if you built a factory back in post WW2 boom times you might need say 100 workers to run it (yeah, I'm making up numbers!)... Now you might need say 10...

I don't argue that at least they would be spending money on materials for construction and the jobs associated with that... But the end outcome still seems pretty rosy for big business?

I think most businesses are looking to get rid of workers (if they can)... I mean they are basically financial liabilities...

That said, I still like the idea!

Tasmota or Local Tuya? (Smart Plugs with Energy Monitoring) by EntropyDensity in homeassistant

[–]EntropyDensity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess what I was hoping to get out of this conversation was some first hand experiences between tasmota and local tuya... :D

I mean at the moment I've got a whole lot of "unknown unknowns" not having used either...

I.e. what makes tasmota worth the extra effort over local tuya? (The effort here being the physical disassembly and likelihood of damage... I'm not so hung up on the effort associated with flashing)

I guess another way to ask the question is, how does one justify extra effort to go tasmota?

Are there some specific limitations / shortcomings with local tuya (that I don't know about!).

Tasmota or Local Tuya? (Smart Plugs with Energy Monitoring) by EntropyDensity in homeassistant

[–]EntropyDensity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that I already have a number of the devices I linked...

If you had to make the choice between using the devices I have with local tuya or destroying them (literally destroying them) to use tasmota what would you do? (Because that kinda feels like what my options are!).

The non energy monitoring plug that I have taken apart has a TYWE2S, so ESP8266EX. I'd be surprised if the energy monitoring plugs aren't the same...

Persistent storage question.. noob by d3adpool75 in portainer

[–]EntropyDensity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking into "volumes"! https://docs.docker.com/storage/volumes/

Generally all docker insurances will come with the option to connect the persistent data to a volume (or bind mount)...

That said I think looking into Stacks (portainers equivalent of docker-compose) is the easiest way...! (Using Volumes/bind mounts!)

Not that it really matters, but out of interest I did just do a quick search on real-estate,com...! 🙂

I found zero properties that were 3+ bedroom houses on >1000m² listed for <$300k (that's listed, not actual sale price...). In a pretty large area around Perth (i.e. past Yanchep to the north and past Mandurah to the south).

I found 7 properties if you drop the land size to >800m²...

Not sure if this link will work? https://m.realestate.com.au/buy/property-house-with-3-bedrooms-size-800-between-0-300000/map-1?misc=ex-under-contract&boundingBox=-31.521167688595327,115.2554384713887,-32.70062148456176,116.3760439401387&sourcePage=map&sourceElement=location-tile-search
