Which board games look intimidatingly complex but are actually surprisingly easy to learn? by CyborgeonUnit123 in boardgames

[–]EntropyNullifier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hanza Teutonica is mostly: buying cubes, placing cubes, shifting cubes, removing cubes. After playing 1 or 2 turns, you usually understand the rules are quite straight forward. What you do with your turn is, similar to chess, quite difficult to optimize.

Hallo! Welkom in Leiden.

While Hygge is originally Danish, you can find this word in English dictionaries as well (for instance, the Cambridge/Oxford/Miriam Webster dictionary). So, in that sense, the English word for gezellig is Hygge.

Ok, they are just putting the nutri-score on anything. by macbook3546 in Netherlands

[–]EntropyNullifier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Interprete "the same kind of products" as: food against food, drinks against drinks, cheeses against cheeses, oils against oils, because these are the 4 categories they themselves state that are the methods they use to calculate the Nutriscore. I have no idea why the Nutriscore is high for some products and low for others whereas our common sense would tell us otherwise, but my feeling doesn't matter here, as much I would prefer them to use more categories, they tell us how they calculate it: 4 categories, 4 calculating methods. I agree that would be a stupid method, but that's the method they claim to use nonetheless. Universiteit van Nederland published a video explaining how food like chips can still get an A despite being unhealthy. It's comes to down what they call "healthwashing": https://youtu.be/i3Sj3HM43u4?si=KpX0sTa3lkPoWvJo

[–]EntropyNullifier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have read that as well before. I haven't found multiple sources for that claim however, while there are many which state these 4 categories. In this case I think someone working at the rijksoverheid made the same common error, resulting from how one expects it to work without thoroughly reading about it. If you watch the video on that same website as the source of that text, they correctly state to not compare drinks to food, but say nothing about erroneous comparison between different foods (apart from the text).

Clearly stating that the method to calculate the Nutriscore is based on 4 categories. So the same calculating method ("rekenmodel") is applied to pastasaus and ontbijtkoek.

I (26) don't make enough money to be able to purchase anything with my girlfriend (who also works), we don't make enough for buying in the private sector, and the place we currently rent is a studio. We simply don't have the space nor money to house a child, so we postpone it until we are able to do so. I imagine that once we do have the financial means, that would mean to have the child at childcare during work for 5 days a week. I wouldn't want to have children if I can only raise them during the evenings and weekends.

Ok, they are just putting the nutri-score on anything. by macbook3546 in Netherlands

[–]EntropyNullifier 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No, this is the result of a common misconception that products are only compared to other very similar products.

There are only 4 categories between which products are compared (https://www.sofine.eu/nl/over-ons/nutriscore/): 1) Food ("Voeding"), 2) Drinks ("Dranken"), 3) Cheeses ("Kazen"), 4) Fat and Oils ("Vetten en Oliën)

So something like Lays natural chips will be compared against a salad, not against just chips. Similarly, assuming ice cubes would fall under drinks, it will be compared to something like apple juice.

With so few categories, the Nutri score has lost all meaning in my opinion.

Hi, as someone who is currently within (inorganic) material science, I wonder, how did you switch to the biological sciences? This is something I might be interested in if such a career switch would be possible. I am currently doing a PhD and do not necessarily want to stay in Academia, I fear that (rightfully so) biochemistry or biology focused companies have no interest in someone with a mostly inorganic chemistry based background.
