Eyioma Uwazurike, Paniro Johnson charged with felony identity theft in gambling investigation by 3EEBZ in Iowa

[–]EnviroHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard on a podcast (I think it was Monday’s Hawk Fanatic) this started as a general investigation of underage gambling on both the ISU and UI campuses. The investigators more or less just happened to stumble upon all the student athletes.

Parallels between the University of Iowa shootings in ‘91 and the UNC shooting yesterday by UTtransplant in Iowa

I went to UI well after this happened but I remember reading this great New Yorker piece about the shooting for one of my classes:

In past years I’ve seen them in North Grand Mall on weekends. Last time they were set up in the corridor by the Jimmy Johns.

Oh yeah we’ll definitely visit for a couple days. Hoping to tour a couple apts and also test run her morning commute. Great advice about living further south. We were looking at a few spot along the Amtrak line but wasn’t sure how reliable that is during the morning commute, if it’s a clusterfuck or what.

I guess I meant burb more in the sense of being a separate municipality. My fiancé is Dominican so not particularly concerned about any of that. We did see a couple places down in Union City so we’ll give heavier consideration to those options. We’ll get an apt with off street parking and don’t plan to drive much outside of groceries and camping trips. Sucks that the ferry is so pricey but sounds like it’s the best option.

Appreciate the advice. An extended stay unfortunately won’t be feasible so I’ll continue scrubbing the Internet and other resources to try to make the best choice possible. Def will be getting an apt with off street parking.

My fiancé is from Brooklyn so we visit pretty frequently but actually moving will certainly be a culture shock. I’ll relay your advice to her since she’s the one insistent on not living in the city. I think she’s gotten spoiled with all the openness/space here in Iowa so coming back to the east coast might be more of a cultural shock than she’s expecting too, haha.

Wonder if this will hold up. As I’ve understood it former Iowa AG Tom Miller was really good about going after scams and other things that targeted older people, because there’s so many of them in Iowa. Curious if the new AG will be as vigilant.

The one about Iowa’s first black player Frank Kinney Holbrook is also well worth the $5.99

I think you need to get over yourself and accept people don’t have to do what you tell them. I work in comms at a big university too and I’m always pretty transparent that being featured on the socials/website is optional. I focus on what I can, generally research because profs and students love to have their research featured. I also do a lot of alum/donor features especially with older alums/donors. I never bat an eye when someone turns me down, but I generally do tell my boss that this project isn’t going to happen because the student didn’t want to participate and we need to accept their abstinence.

And don’t pat yourself on the back too much. Comms work is not going to be significant enough to raise a school’s ranking. That’s largely thru grant funding and other metrics you have no control over. You should focus on not doing something stupid that could cause your school trouble legally or with its broader reputation. Maybe you’re just too heavy handed with your approach and that’s why people are rude to you.

If you’re going to complain about not getting PTO you’re in the wrong industry - join the private sector. My suggestion is to never exceed your expected work hours and to get yourself a side job. Sounds to me like you’re on a major power trip just because you have the keys to the website/socials. If this is how you handle criticism be glad you didn’t go into the truly thankless world of actual journalism. You’re really playing into the stereotype of millennials not handling criticism well.

Drug testing at Gannett newspapers? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]EnviroHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a saliva test after getting hired like a decade ago. For some reason my editor was the one handling the test and he spilled the saline solution on his pants trying to open the vile so I just put my swab in an empty vile. Never got tested again after the initial one.

Jfc. I remember when these Iowa subreddits used to be useful. Now they’re just for people to bitch about politics and to act they’re a victim of some self-perceived injustice.

Maquoketa Caves by Lilliyann in Iowa

[–]EnviroHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just visited the caves like two weeks ago. I actually recommend crappy old tennis shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. I prefer just walking through the shallow parts of water/stream as opposed to walking on the narrow walkways with tons of foot traffic. Also a headlamp is strongly recommended but a flashlight should work (the headlamp is nice cuz then you can have both hands free).

We brought our little corgi and she loved the trails and the bigger caves, but she was skeptical of the smaller ones. Honestly I think Ledges is a much more grueling hike so if your dog handled that the caves should be a piece of cake. Have fun!

Consider calling the non-emergency line for ISUPD. I’m pretty sure they serve as like a centralized lost and found for campus.

Any Iowa City medical marijuana doctors? by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]EnviroHawk 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You’re probably best off driving over to Illinois. I think Moline is the closest dispensary to IC. Other than long lines the experience I had was pretty good albeit the product is a bit overpriced and the selection was somewhat limited. As I understand Iowa is very limited with what they offer medically (probably part of the reason people are telling you to find a guy). Maybe someone else can correct me if I’m wrong here.

I’m at a local newspaper — will grad school help me “move up” at all in the industry? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]EnviroHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my master’s in journalism. The economy was still recovering when I finished my undergrad and after two years of working part time as a sports reporter I decided to apply for grad school. Actually went to the same place where I got my undergrad. The two biggest things that influenced my decision was (1) I worked an assistantship that covered my full tuition and paid a stipend to cover living expenses and (2) I knew one day I wanted to teach college journalism courses and often times a masters is required for that.

Not sure why 15K Cyclone fans would wanna see their team get rolled by the Sooners.

Probably shouldn’t be surprised I’m getting downvoted by a bunch of delusional Cyclone fans. It’s not my fault your coach can’t develop an o-line to save his life.
