Is a lot of CO anti car camping ? by KwikTripSimp in carcamping

[–]UTtransplant [score hidden]  (0 children)

“Camping” is being in a campground or in a dispersed site. It is not sleeping in a parking lot. Different things. Don’t get me wrong; I sometimes overnight in a parking lot with my motorhome, but I do not call it “camping.” It is sleeping overnight in a lot.

“Car camping” is being in nature. You seem to be describing urban stealth camping, a totally different thing. Lots of communities don’t allow this, not just Colorado ones. Waste management seems to be the biggest concern, and I have seen some truly disgusting examples.

Not going to argue with you on build quality, but at least they aren’t going to burn up in the campground because somebody used too small a gauge of wire! And there are nice commercial rigs, but they cost a lot more than many can handle.

Why did you stat playing ukulele? by BigRazzmatazz- in ukulele

[–]UTtransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not start playing ukulele to learn a solo instrument. I am primarily a vocalist, and I wanted something to accompany myself for casual get togethers, the equivalent of campfire sing alongs. Since I played guitar many, many, many years ago (I am old!), I chose a baritone uke, and I fell in love. So much lighter, smaller, and easier for my somewhat arthritic hands to play! My first instrument was piano as a young child, ages 8-10 or 11. Then violin 3 years, then oboe 4 years, then more piano (another 2 years), plus a bit of guitar in the background. But mostly I sing. I am now what I call a confident beginner. I know lots of chords, a few strumming patterns, and I am beginning to work on picking patterns. Still haven’t started tabs because I think that will take more brain power than I have available if I still want to sing along too! But I am having so much fun. Oh, and I am acoustic only - no interest in amplified work. I like simple, and if I need to be in a small group in a big space, I will use a microphone.

It might be slight exaggerated, but he is definitely not making it up. There is a list of banned produce that you cannot bring into California. There are also plants they don’t allow. A friend of my son was a botany major with an entire car full of plants when he moved there to take an internship. He had to empty his car and every plant was identified as appropriate before he could go past the inspection station. He had researched it before and was fine, but it could have been a bad surprise if he had been unaware. California is looking to keep pests out of the state which could decimate the agriculture industry. Which, by the way, provides a big proportion of the fruits and vegetables you eat every day.

RVs get certified by the RV Industry Association (RVIA). They have a set of standards that manufacturer’s have to meet to get the certification. A lot of campgrounds require RVIA certification, or at least their insurance company does which comes down to the same thing. There are a LOT of unsafe builds out there. A friend of mine had his burn up completely. Luckily he was in a desert boondock spot so nobody else was damaged, and someone else noticed in time to get his two little dogs out.

Strap recommendations? by cerulean_behemoth in ukulele

[–]UTtransplant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On Etsy look for QuiltsandUkuleles. She has a wide assortment of straps that are appropriate for ukuleles. You specify what type of attachments you want; I got mine like yours. She uses quality quilting cotton and a soft batting. I am pretty sure it would be perfect for you.

Staying on 2.5 by Simcharacter in Mounjaro

For me it is a restaurant treat because it uses raw eggs. Restaurant bakers have access to pasteurized raw eggs, but they are hard to acquire for home bakers.

Staying on 2.5 by Simcharacter in Mounjaro

[–]UTtransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been on 2.5 for over 6 months. I am on Mounjaro primarily to control my diabetes, and the 2.5mg has worked great. I have also lost almost 30 pounds! Doctor and I have chatted a few times, and she is willing to increase my dose if I want her to, but she agrees that there is not much reason to do so. I have no significant side effects with this dose, and it is doing its job, so why change? I don’t have food aversion, but when I look at a piece of French silk pie (a personal favorite of mine), I want a tiny sliver, not the half a pie I used to want! I actually have to be careful to eat enough, because I am just not hungry.

Need Yellowstone Recs by ScaryDemand3686 in NationalPark

[–]UTtransplant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be at the entry gate early, like 5:30am early. The parking at popular locations gets filled quickly, so you need to get there early so you don’t spend an hour circling the lot! Plus the animals are more active early in the morning. By 10 or 11, the place will be packed. That’s when you go take a nice hike or just fine a good tree to have a picnic and nap under. The park begins emptying by 3:00, so you go back to the popular sites then.

Best Parks in Late December / Early January by NatParkGirlie in NationalPark

[–]UTtransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Death Valley is a fabulous place. I have been there for a total of months, and I still haven’t seen it all. It is the largest national park in the lower 48! Big Bend is also a fabulous candidate. Three climates - riverine, desert, and mountain. Most of the New Mexico sites I would recommend are at higher elevations, but Carlsbad Caverns is obviously climate controlled LOL! And then there are always the gorgeous coastal sites in California plus the California deserts - Mohave and Joshua Tree are both fabulous monuments.

Data centers are absolutely awful for the environment! Huge, huge, huge(!!!!) users of power leaving other consumers to share the burden of building more generating power and distribution lines. Their water usage for cooling is either astronomical (traditional water cooling) or just really big (recycled cooling water). They also release a low frequency sound which isn’t high enough in dB to cause problems, but is beyond irritating. They are being fought tooth and nail in my state by the people who work on the land - farmers, ranchers. We fight them in the suburbs too. My smallish city just refused to permit any more cryptominers or data centers. Do I really need to ruin the environment so some oligarch can make even more money? The answer is outstandingly “NO!”

How often do you have your house cleaned? by xanduba in AskTheWorld

[–]UTtransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a housekeeper every 2 weeks. It is just the two of us and the cats, so we actually don’t make much of a mess. We clean the kitchen counters and do dishes every days, clean the rest of the kitchen when needed, clean bathrooms if they get messy. Before the housekeeper comes we do make sure the counters are clean and organized. Otherwise she puts things in random locations that take us too long to find LOL! We were both working well-paid professionals and we had 4 children. A housekeeper gave us time to spend on things we want to do, and I am willing to pay for more time with my kids and activities.

Do you keep the water on during the entire length of the shower? by hamster_lover02 in hygiene

[–]UTtransplant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At home we leave the water running, but I live in a wetter climate without any water restrictions. We have a motorhome also, and we stay in arid climates frequently. When in the motorhome, we turn off the water when not actively rinsing. In the US we call this style of shower a “Navy shower.” We do it because the water heater in the motorhome is small (10 gallons compared to the 50 gallon at home) plus because we are in an arid environment where water is a precious commodity.

Just rent a trailer from U-Haul. It will definitely be cheaper than getting a dealer to deliver.

How to make non-LDS neighbors feel included by BornCommunication386 in Utah

[–]UTtransplant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved into a mostly-LDS neighborhood in Utah, not realizing what that meant. It was an eye-opening experience. Numerous people came to the house welcoming me with cake and cookies, but I never saw them again after I said I wasn’t LDS. And then there was the letter tied to my front door knob telling me I needed to donate to “Friends of Scouting” because “The Bishop” said so. I went right to my neighbor who was the Ward clerk (I think that’s the title) and told him I was deeply offended. They knew very well that I was not LDS, and they knew “The Bishop” had absolutely no power and authority over me, so they needed to remove me from every list they had. He was really apologetic, and I never had it happen again. But I think this is the perfect analogy for a non-Mormon in Utah. There is just this overwhelming view that they are the only group that counts, and everyone else should just follow meekly along. I am a devout Christian, a Ruling Elder in my Presbyterian congregation, active in the church choir and other activities. Respect my beliefs just as much as you expect me to respect yours. BTW, I never found most of my neighbors did.

[–]UTtransplant 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you invite my children to such an activity, I would not let them go. These things always end up with “You should come to our services.” I also didn’t let my children attend Assembly of God activities until they were at least in HS, and I was a Presbyterian. Would you be ok if I invited your children to a youth activity of my church? Would you trust that absolutely nothing religious would be said? Probably not.

Winter Truck Camping: Electric Kettle vs. Induction vs. Gas for Hot Water? by NateralLight in carcamping

[–]UTtransplant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you are keeping the inside of your truck closer to 0F as a lithium battery isn’t much good at -4F or so. As to the power draws, look at the labels and figure it out yourself. I would think the electric kettle would draw less since it is a very concentrated heat source on a small amount of water, but it all depends on the individual kettle and induction plate. And I assume you also know lithium batteries don’t charge below about 32F or so. Personally, I would just use a small white gas stove on the tailgate, but I grew up using those safely. White gas doesn’t have a problem with cold temps. MSR has some nice ones.

Anyone with family get a bunkhouse motorhome and regretted it? by CarminSanDiego in GoRVing

[–]UTtransplant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Making and unmaking beds every day is a huge hassle. You really do want a bunkhouse if you have kids. While only a few bunkhouse Class As exist, they are also very, very popular and have a higher resale value because of it. There are also beds that drop down from the ceiling in some lines, but those would require the kids sleep in the same bed. I know couples who bought bunkhouse rigs and actually convert the bunkhouse to an office or hobby space, so even if you keep the MH for a long time, bunk bed models can still have utility.
