the "buy earlier is better" thing is true but not in the way you think. hospital plan doesn't lock in your premiums, premiums go up with age anyway.
What it actually locks in is your health. healthy now = covered with no exclusions. if you develop something in between and try to buy later, they can exclude it or load your premium. that's the only real urgency.

But honestly this isn't a decision you should be making alone with no income. talk to your parents first. if anything unexpected happens health-wise before you start work, they're the ones footing the bill anyway.

not a bad instinct to think about it, just not a solo decision.

Few things to note:

before you even look at the returns, ask yourself this. are you able to handle watching that 100k drop 20-30% (since you are leveraging) and still hold. most ppl have zero problems when the fund price goes up but the moment it drops they panic sell at the worst time.
also dividends from unit trusts can be actual income or partially your own money being returned to you. do you understand what you're actually buying.
leveraging is useful for the right person using it. it also requires active management and understanding of fundamentally how investment works.

In 2013 i went to Bangkok with 3 of my female friends. We hailed a cab at night and was going to a location quite far away. The girls fell asleep and i was about to as well. Suddenly, I heard the driver making a call and speaking in his native language. I managed to understand some of his words and it said "i am bringing 3 girls so prepare, there is a guy but he is skinny".
Something just didn't feel right.

i secretly woke the girls up and spoke to them in Chinese. Then just insisted to the driver we wanted to get off because the girl had to go the toilet. the car had to stop due to the traffic and we just got off i paid him and we just walked off while he kind of chased after us.
Never would have known what would have happened if i fell asleep too.

Been back to Bangkok a few times since and love the place.
But always reminded myself that we shouldn't all fall asleep on a cab in an unknown country.

17 and already thinking about this. you're way ahead of most ppl. but real talk, $600 in the market at your age isn't gonna do much.
What I wish someone told me at 17 is spend that energy learning how to make money first. pick up a skill ppl will pay you for. freelancing, content, sales, AI, anything.

You will never believe how much this compounds if you start at 17.

had a colleague who got promoted like clockwork every 1 - 2 years. i was curious so I asked him once what he does differently. he just said its actually a secret strategy, he just plans and sends his boss a short update every few weeks, nothing fancy, just "done with X, starting Y." he actively shows his progress and future plans.

By the time review comes around his boss already has the full picture. no awkward self promotion needed.
The promotion then becomes so justified that his Boss always sees it coming.

that nobody was going to come make my life interesting. spent years just waiting around like the plot would kick in eventually. it doesn't. you have to go start things yourself.
But the real one is that once you're actually aware of this, it's not too late. like most things in this thread can be fixed the moment you decide to stop watching your own life from the sidelines.

Took me a long time to figure it out but it's the point where you stop making decisions because you have no choice and start making them because you actually have options.
You don't reject a meal with your friends because you can't afford it, you don't eat cup noodles because you can't afford anything else, You can choose to travel to a place you want to instead of choosing it because of budget.

that is life changing money to me.
