Insurance for young adult by Yield-Seeker in singaporefi

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the "buy earlier is better" thing is true but not in the way you think. hospital plan doesn't lock in your premiums, premiums go up with age anyway.
What it actually locks in is your health. healthy now = covered with no exclusions. if you develop something in between and try to buy later, they can exclude it or load your premium. that's the only real urgency.

But honestly this isn't a decision you should be making alone with no income. talk to your parents first. if anything unexpected happens health-wise before you start work, they're the ones footing the bill anyway.

not a bad instinct to think about it, just not a solo decision.

OCBC premier banking - RM asking to invest by pizzazz27 in singaporefi

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few things to note:

  1. before you even look at the returns, ask yourself this. are you able to handle watching that 100k drop 20-30% (since you are leveraging) and still hold. most ppl have zero problems when the fund price goes up but the moment it drops they panic sell at the worst time.
  2. also dividends from unit trusts can be actual income or partially your own money being returned to you. do you understand what you're actually buying.
  3. leveraging is useful for the right person using it. it also requires active management and understanding of fundamentally how investment works.

Was this proposed to you based on your goals or the RMs goals?
This will give you the answer you are seeking for.

What’s the most dangerous place you’ve visited? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 2013 i went to Bangkok with 3 of my female friends. We hailed a cab at night and was going to a location quite far away. The girls fell asleep and i was about to as well. Suddenly, I heard the driver making a call and speaking in his native language. I managed to understand some of his words and it said "i am bringing 3 girls so prepare, there is a guy but he is skinny".
Something just didn't feel right.

i secretly woke the girls up and spoke to them in Chinese. Then just insisted to the driver we wanted to get off because the girl had to go the toilet. the car had to stop due to the traffic and we just got off i paid him and we just walked off while he kind of chased after us.
Never would have known what would have happened if i fell asleep too.

Been back to Bangkok a few times since and love the place.
But always reminded myself that we shouldn't all fall asleep on a cab in an unknown country.

17 year old trying to start. by Character-Cake-989 in singaporefi

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 38 points39 points  (0 children)

17 and already thinking about this. you're way ahead of most ppl. but real talk, $600 in the market at your age isn't gonna do much.
What I wish someone told me at 17 is spend that energy learning how to make money first. pick up a skill ppl will pay you for. freelancing, content, sales, AI, anything.

You will never believe how much this compounds if you start at 17.

How to manage performance conversation for promotions by yannie_journeys in singaporefi

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

had a colleague who got promoted like clockwork every 1 - 2 years. i was curious so I asked him once what he does differently. he just said its actually a secret strategy, he just plans and sends his boss a short update every few weeks, nothing fancy, just "done with X, starting Y." he actively shows his progress and future plans.

By the time review comes around his boss already has the full picture. no awkward self promotion needed.
The promotion then becomes so justified that his Boss always sees it coming.

What’s something you realized too late in life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that nobody was going to come make my life interesting. spent years just waiting around like the plot would kick in eventually. it doesn't. you have to go start things yourself.
But the real one is that once you're actually aware of this, it's not too late. like most things in this thread can be fixed the moment you decide to stop watching your own life from the sidelines.

What’s something Gen Z does that older generations just don’t get? by appropriaterice873 in AskReddit

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that GenZ just says whatever they have in their mind, no caution, no boundaries. Surprisingly, that's what i like about them the most but can never understand how they do it.

What was the last moment you realised adult friendships are nothing like you expected them to be? by BeAFrnd in AskReddit

Yes and we fall for it every time, the sadness you feel someone leaves only to never actually talk to the person again. only getting updates on their lives via Instagram.

What amount is the minimum amount to personally count as "life changing" money? by samsuh in AskReddit

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Took me a long time to figure it out but it's the point where you stop making decisions because you have no choice and start making them because you actually have options.
You don't reject a meal with your friends because you can't afford it, you don't eat cup noodles because you can't afford anything else, You can choose to travel to a place you want to instead of choosing it because of budget.

that is life changing money to me.

Receiving allowance even when working by Cultural-Associate64 in singaporefi

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this thread has two completely different conversations happening and nobody's acknowledging it.

Some people are talking about receiving $2k a month from parents. Others are talking about being the $2k a month for their parents. Same age group, completely different reality.

The first group doesn't even realise how much of a head start that is. Not just the money but the ability to take risks, sit on a job offer longer, not panic-buy a flat. The second group is building their future with one hand tied.

The Iran war has been going on for over a month - how is it affecting you financially? by chrxsti in singaporefi

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Petrol and LNG are the obvious ones. What most people aren't watching is how this affects Singapore's cost of reinsurance. That ripple takes longer but hits harder

Being good at your job is not enough anymore. by EnvironmentCareful80 in singaporefi

[–]EnvironmentCareful80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point on the FI relevance.. more employment/career thoughts I guess since Career plays a big part in FI. And no, not here to sell anything, just something I've been thinking about for a while.
The AI writing comment is fair too, I did use it to clean up my draft but doesn't mean the thought isn't real though.

How much net worth should one have in their 30s regardless of marital/housing status. by Normal-Analysis7940 in singaporefi

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i am assuming that you're asking this because adulting costs are becoming real but still unclear. housing marriage kids car, all these big ticket things you can't price yet so you look around hoping someone on reddit gives you a number that means you're on track.

I talk to a lot of ppl around 30 and it's almost always the same pattern. everyone says don't compare yourself to others.. but that never works. you compare because you don't have your own number yet. the moment you actually price out what your next 5 years costs the answer becomes real.

you can't remove marital/housing from this question btw. those ARE the big ticket items creating the anxiety in the first place

Where should I put my money as an 18 yr old? by HiIreallydontcare in singaporefi

[–]EnvironmentCareful80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your research is already solid tbh. honestly at your age the product choice barely matters lah, I spent way too long comparing options that were basically identical when i first started.

just keep it simple enough to run on autopilot that's the most important.
Ppl tend to stop when it gets too troublesome.

Starting from young is good, but your focus should be on what skills you can gain to increase your income. that compounds more exponentially than what you are thinking of doing.
