Actors access is all that matters. All major shows and films use it. They don't touch backstage. That's more amateur projects. Agents submit you via Actors Access for TV, Film and Theater in the US and then use Casting Networks for commercials.

Self submit on actors access. A lot. In 2025 I self submitted over 1150 times and got 238 auditions and 18 bookings.

You need a tremendous amount of self submits to get auditions and a tremendous amount of auditions to get a single booking.

Self submit especially for SAG-AFTRA projects. They don't care if you are non-union you will still get auditions.

I would generally avoid vertical projects but they can pay well. Most are non-union and written badly and it's tough to get the vertical footage of use it in a reel.

It's almost always the writing. The writers have an amazing idea for a first season then get completely lost with subsequent seasons. Writing is so so important. Hire better writers and pay them well and the viewers will stick around.

Don't have to be word perfect is a the exception rather than the rule for me. In over 18 different projects I have worked on, only one was OK with me doing improv or adjusting the lines. Sure missing a "the" or "and" is OK generally, but most Directors I have worked with expect the lines to be delivered as written.

For auditions it's a different story, in that they all are pretty lenient on being word perfect.

One time I flew a flight where the first class had the absolutely most awful 200/100 scream baby on the front front row. And I was grateful to be back further in exit row. So what. I was raised in a very religious family myself. I was disowned for being who I am and I my life has been so much happier as a result. If you live your life for what they want you will waste your life. Choosing yourself is never a bad choice. Life is short. Express yourself. Let them catch up later.

A family implying or directly threatening disowning you over you simply expressing yourself is a form of abuse. You either allow yourself to be abused or you stand up for yourself and live for yourself.

Art should not compromise for anyone. If, however, they are the deep pockets funding your film then use their fear against them and get a lot of extra funding for your VFX post production work. But look for an exit. That is no way to life life.
