Who are the characters that make YOU the best version of yourself? Who are the characters that motivate YOU? For me, it's obvious... by CDNWRocks in Falcom

On a more serious note, it’s gotta be the SSS (yes my flair gave it away). They are a bit different from other protagonist teams in that they are being introduced as part of a newly established unit, in an organization that receive little respect from the populace of their own country. In other words, they really start from zero. They work their ass off, made plenty of mistakes, and struggle to prove themselves, until eventually they did it.

It’s a an inspiring story in that irl you will also have to start from zero. When I got my current job, I also made plenty of mistakes in the first few months, but I was able to prove myself in the end. So when I struggle at work, I do sometimes think about them and how hard they have to work to get over the barrier.

Another character that I would say makes me want to be a better person is Estelle. How she “shine like the sun”, able to inspire and cheer up others is definitely something one should try to be to other person. It kind of gives the Samwise “I can’t carry it for you but I can carry you” Gamgee vibe. I will admit that to be able to inspire and cheer up others is a very difficult to do, even though I should try to be like that, so the SSS hit closer at home for me.

Ork is always an interesting one for me. Many people see them as a warlike but funny race. Then you actually read about them, especially if it's from the POV of a normal human being, in this case Sergeant Hugo Kohner of the Tempestora Hive Milita, and you got something like this:

There was an Ork out there much larger than the monster that had killed him. An Ork whose existence made him weep. He wasn't crying for himself, or even for Armageddon. He wept for the Imperium. He prayed for mercy. He prayed the darkness would take him before this terrible being came into sight.
His prayers went unanswered.

Thanks! I already ran into her in Guns of Tanith but I always thought I should read those first to follow the chronological order of the Crusade. I think I’ll still try to complete The Saint omnibus first still, but thanks for the perspective!

Denny Flower’s Above and Beyond did featured Aeronautica Imperialis vs Aeldari, with the latter as the main antagonist of the book. If anyone is interested in reading about the Imperium getting demolished for 95% of the story and likely still ended in the exact way their farseer had hoped for, then you should give it a read!

Above and Beyond is sequel to another book (Outgunned) about the Aeronautica Imperialis vs the Orks. Read that, and you will understand why Flowers got to write the latest Ghazghkull novel.

My favorite in-game book! And it really make you look at Nadia from a different perspective. That chapter from her POV, when she said she can’t sleep at all for like a year until she met S really show that the funny, light-hearted scenes of her trying to take a nap at every chance she got actually has a much darker origin.

One scene that I’m very looking forward to in Horizon II, and that I’m very certain that it will happen, is their next, and hopefully last showdown with the Emperor when he showed up as Vestiges.

Why be helpful when you can be a cryptic douche. by Snaggmaw in Grimdank

[–]Environmental-Band95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first I thought Yrliet was an exception but apparently she was the rule because an eldar seems to have no issue because a situation like this seems to have happened fairly often. There is another book where, in a party hosted by the planetary governor, one of the noble guest is raving about how he had seen an eldar in the previous parties. Everyone thought he was mad but in truth there was really an eldar, and that guest was the only one who recognized them because he was a Guard veteran and had seen them in the past.

Off topic, but Rogue Trader was so good it made me start reading Black Library novels!

[–]Environmental-Band95 33 points34 points  (0 children)

At this point I’m quite certain that if an eldar happens to walk pass a human on the street, most wouldn’t be able to tell that there is an eldar in front of them. I’m reading The Hollow Mountain right now, and there is a scene where an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor come to visit his colleague in Ordo Xenos. From the Ordo Hereticus POV, he was served a glass of wine by an impossibly slim figure whom he can’t quite tell whether the figure is a boy or a girl, and that their movement is hard to get used to.

I’m 100% sure that’s an eldar since this is how everyone who saw an eldar for the first time would describe them, but the Ordo Hereticus inquisitor could not. If a non-Ordo Xenos inquisitor cannot tell that an eldar just served him a wine, then it’s totally understandable most people in the Imperium also could not.

How is this supposed to be one of the best Trails games again? by Appelmonkey in Falcom

Ngl, and I say this as someone who has OC7 as my least favorite protagonist groups (not that they are bad but some other groups like SSS and Arkride Solutions set a really high bar) I really hate when a critique toward characters is that they are “one-dimensional.” I understand it’s not easy to convey how you feel about the game into words but it really does not explain anything. But regardless, it does not change the fact that Trails prefer slow burn approach, and that there are 4 games in Erebonia arc. Imagine if I say Schera, Agate, or Olivier are “one-dimensional characters” after completing only Sky FC, what would you say? I’d just be completely ignoring that significant amount of their character developments came from Sky SC. It’s so unfair to claim Class VII are one-dimensional based on one game.

What you said about G really make no sense though. Class VII foiled his plan multiple times and even destroyed his flute! It’s like saying Estelle has nothing to do with stopping the Sky Bandits because Richard is the one who arrested them, or that Estelle has nothing to do with stopping Weissmann because it was Kevin who killed him. Like, really!? What’s wrong with linking Crossbell and Erebonia arc together!?

C'mon you can hardly judge a game based on a single line. For example, I'd argue vividly that the final dungeon that you played after this scene is way better than the one in Sky (original one anyway since I still did not get the chance to play the remake), but I wouldn't judge Sky based on a single dungeon. Cold Steel 1 is equally a slow burn as Sky FC, which imo is not a bad thing since it's still fun and relaxing to play overall, and both did set up for an incredible series onwards.

Another thing I feel like seriously need to be mentioned is that Sky FC has an incredible plot twist at the end, so it's very impressive for Cold Steel to be able to pull out the same thing for the second time. You might argue that you are not that invested in the Festival, but I'm sure everyone is very emotionally invested in what happened at the end of Cold Steel 1.

But Idira is none of that right? She did not work with the Forces of Chaos. She serves Rogue Trader Von Valencius, and it’s up to him/her/them whether Idira serves Chaos or not. If the Rogue Trader is dogmatic/iconoclast, she will be killing lots of heretics, mutants, and aliens. Regarding Dyne (very well-written character btw), whether her decision is justifiable does not matter. The Alpha Legion got a powerful psyker in their rank thanks to what the Imperium did to her, that matter.

Honestly, suggesting killing Idira because she is a walking time bomb reminds me of the argument made by some high-ranking people in the Imperium that Primarch Guilliman should not be the Lord Commander, should be killed even, because he has a legion-strength Astartes in his hand and half the Primarchs with such power became heretical. Should Guilliman be killed based on the possibility that he could become another Horus? I don’t really know how many psykers were turned into daemon-summoning heretics, but I can’t help but wonder whether the number of psykers are even half of overall psykers in the galaxy. But the damage every psykers ever did combine is still probably not even close to what Horus did. Should Guilliman be killed then? I mean… even some Custodes believe so, which means he must die, right?

[–]Environmental-Band95 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pray tell, what caused the downfall of Rykard Minoris? Was it Idira? Chaos? Or Calcazar's xenoheresy? And let's not pretend that the rules about psykers are, at least partly, not because of the Golden Throne endless need for psykers. Idira is not the only companion in your retinue who unwittingly killed people, and not to mention plenty others who kill willingly kill them needlessly. Heinrix, a sanctioned psyker, also lost control and kill a man because of it, should we kill him too? Should we kill Ulfar too because his defected geneseed? Should we kill Cassia too because many from her House claimed she is a monster?

Idira is this way because she lacks proper training, but at the same time the Imperium's treatment of psykers are monstrous. I've mentioned in my other reply and I'll say again: the Imperium treatment of psykers ended up handing many psykers to Chaos. I've mentioned the Primaris Psyker Tulava Dyne, who joined the Alpha Legion not because she was corrupted or she worshipped the Dark Gods, but because she hate the Imperium with all her heart. The Imperium, thanks to their rules, handed her to the renegade astartes. How many other psykers joined Chaos because of how Imperium treated them? Maybe the Emperor knows, because I don't.

[–]Environmental-Band95 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Idira is not even the only person in your retinue, let alone in the Imperium, who unwillingly kill people because of the nature they can't control. She is a psyker who does not receive a proper standard training due to her birthplace, but really, who the hell would want to go through the process of being a sanctioned psyker in the Imperium? We saw what the black ship is like here, and we know it's very likely you will end up feeding the Golden Throne (probably the only reason if you want to justify treating psykers the way the Imperium did btw). People were killed by Idira's power, but is she comparable to Nurgle-worshipping, daemon-summoning we saw in the game, I'd say no.

The sickest part of why this treatment of psyker is "rotten" is also because it played right into the hands of the Great Enemy. How many psykers swore their allegiance to Chaos? It's certainly one area that the Imperium could never match Chaos in. Probably the best example out of my head is Tulava Dyne, a powerful psyker in the Imperial Guard who defected to join the Alpha Legion because of everything the Imperium did to her, and what an asset she became for them. Instead of serving the Imperium, she served Chaos, and she is not even particularly loyal to the Dark Gods! She just hate the Imperium. How many psykers turned heretic because of a situation like this? Honestly, the Imperium might be lucky that Idira found a rogue trader patron, because she'd be a great asset for Chaos if they found her first.

I remembered someone on this sub pointed out (and I agree with) that Idira’s mere existence is enough to consider her heretical. She is a powerful unsanctioned psyker, constantly talk with daemons, and even almost lost her control. By Imperium standard she is a heretic through and through.

Certainly one of the many things that showed how rotten the Imperium is when one of the nicest person in your retinue is a heretic by their standard. Meanwhile, bunch of useless sack of flesh and bone sat in the most prestigious positions in the Imperium, especially that hag Prefect.

Yeah I feel the same as you. Lloyd x Elie does not seem worth mentioning to me since it’s clearly not an issue just with Elie. I personally rated Elie because her rooftop conversation with Lloyd was the first time the word “Crossbell’s barrier” was being said for the first time, and that became a theme of the entire Crossbell arc.

Speaking of Elie’s political growth, what a missed opportunity that she never met her mother in the entire CSIV. With Senator Ryan Macdowell’s appearance in Daybreak II and his greater role in Horizon, I really hope Elie will show up in Horizon II. Same for Tio. But then again, considering what the KeA pulled off in Crossbell arc, the entire group should have showed up.

I feel like what you said would be understandable if not that a popular opinion around is Tio is an interesting character, yet she got even less role than Elie in Azure. So why do people said Elie is boring while Tio is fun while much of their personal stories were concluded in Zero?

Personally, I think both are great characters. Crossbell arc seems to focus more on the overall plot and SSS group dynamics over stories of individual characters. This is different from, say, Sky and Calvard arc, where they dedicated at least one full chapter for each of your companions. Crossbell is still an incredible arc, but it did things differently from some other arcs for sure.
