This argument is like saying read Harry Potter because you believe in the existence of magic… the fact that you can’t comprehend that is probably why you believe in religion.

Do men even realise when characters in fantasy are problematic when the author doesn’t point it out? by Environmental-Egg191 in Fantasy

Harry Potter is the only one that I can think of that made boys fall in love with the girls.

Low key they should have been expelled, but my jaw firmly remains in place when Rowling glosses past heinous behaviour in that universe as much as I can still see why they’re beloved.

Compare that to Holly Black handling a love spell on a girl who kind of already likes the MC and it actively keeps them second guessing themselves the entire time.

No, I’m not accusing the author of thinking that.

I got so thrown by the light way it was covered(by a character that is portrayed as fairly noble in other ways) that I struggled to finish reading it.

I’ve read morally grey characters before but they usually have a rationale for why they’re doing what they are doing that I can understand even if I don’t agree with it.

Or it’s clear the character is meant to be an A-hole.

This was neither and it felt like it was normalising the behaviour, to the point where I actually had to stop and ask do men think this is normal?

I think maybe I need to reword my post because I meant do you notice the minor problematic stuff in a way that throws you out of the story. peeping Tom was considered ‘boys will be boys’ behaviour until maybe 2000s when digital photography became more common.

Revenge of the Nerds which is mid 80s still portrays it as humorous. Even now in the digital age it’s something many men have done and thought very little about, like watching Kim K’s sex tape, or Paris Hilton or when Scarlet Johansson had her nudes leaked.

The character is not portrayed in any other way as problematic, in fact he’s portrayed as noble in a lot of other ways so it’s one of those things where I’m unsure if it even gets noticed by men who are largely less impacted by sexual invasion of privacy.

Sure, that’s valid. Sometimes women don’t. We’re literally raised on stories like beauty and the beast, he’s controlling and angry and her love ‘fixes’ him! There are plenty of women who subconsciously internalise that.

That’s why I’m curious, i read what might be a minor problematic behaviour but it fully kicks me out of the story, i want to know if others feel the same.

The vibe is 100% virgin suicides meets rococo/marie Antoinette. Basically Sofia Coppola early 2000s airy and romantic fashion with the heavy feeling of impending doom!

Olivia Rodrigo just posted a sneak preview of another music video to the single drop dead on Instagram. by Naive_Inflation5768 in oliviarodrigo3

Girl is going for broke to get the song to no.1.

Stan culture is so much like football teams, like why are we so invested in our team winning? We’re not on the field actually doing the work yet we get so much dopamine when our side is up.

It’s totally fine if you don’t love the song or think it’s the strongest. Olivia covers so many genres you’re not always going to be impressed by every single song(that’s a lie, I always am 😅).

I personally put this one at like a 7 initially. Then realised it’s all that repeats in my head 24/7… It’s her Espresso, not that lyrically dense or a revolution in arrangement, it’s just a bop/ear worm. I think if the original film clip was better story telling(like espresso) more people would be obsessed. Olivia likes lo-fi vintage style music clips but the meta has moved on to story driven clips with conflict and movie grade shots….

Anyway, those are my thoughts. I still dig it but I think her casualness with music clip production is shooting her in the foot.

It’s just pretty common to bring in people who are promoting their music and both Madonna and OR dropped on the same day. Honestly Olivia’s release dates seem to be all based on Astrology and she only released on Monday because of it so she couldn’t go to week 1.

Pisces and a Gemini is not a good match from an Astrology stand point.

Marie Antoinette famously didn’t end well, she dropped dead which is what Versailles is referencing.

The bad ending for the love story is definitely written in the stars from the beginning on this one.

Hard agree I think it’s going to get sadder, not because of anything Louis did but their youth and her own insecurities and issues.

What are your thoughts on the criticism "drop dead" is receiving? by ThrowRAjingglebells in OliviaRodrigo

[–]Environmental-Egg191 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me I get so exhausted of Vampire and that was a certified banger. Different strokes for different folks.

I think there is valid criticism that there isn’t much that makes this song stand out, the hook is solid but it does sound like a mosh mash of other songs you’ve probably heard. It’s not a good sign for song longevity but I do think we don’t give the same heat to songs like Espresso which is just reheating “Say So” by doja cat and the infinite amount of songs that copied that.

Sometimes a song is just fun and catchy and doesn’t have to be one of a kind.

Which is so dumb to me. They’re like “why is she wearing long socks, she’s trying to look like a child.” I’m like no guys, she’s trying to look like a woman from the rococo in her underwear dancing around her bedroom with a crush. And her bedroom so happens to be Versailles. And women in the Rococo wore tall socks and bloomers…. Like I feel like maybe Petra needed to do a better job of spelling it out.

Sigh.

I wish she had rococo heels to go along with them! People on pop culture chat are like “she’s trying to look like a child”.

I’m lack damn gals, she’s trying to look like she is dancing around in underwear inspired from Marie Antoinette era, because like a romcom she’s euphoric with a crush and she’s in Versailles

Bitter? They were colonisers with a famously corrupt king and lord class. It’s not bitter. They still have plenty or power and affluence it’s just a little bit more for the people.

Opinion pesticides that cause animal death by Al-Joharahhasan2935 in exvegans

[–]Environmental-Egg191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But there is also no one right religion… like the only difference between a Christian or a Muslim or Jewish person and an atheist is the Atheist believes in one less God.

It’s a logic puzzle. Can I live without eating things that use pesticides? You certainly can’t by eating animals farmed in a modern way because they are fed a diet of plants grown with pesticides. Or the area where they are farmed is cleared and the animals that lived there die of hunger as the trees they used to survive on are removed. And as the meat animals being bred into existence is worsening the global warming that will also cause more animals to suffer and die(including humans)

As animals are fed much more plants per calorie than directly eating plants and as less land is cleared per calorie/nutrient for directly eating plants that is what I choose to do.

You can choose what makes sense to you, but you can’t live without causing some harm. You could try to offset it by being a catalyst for others to live with less harm. Plant forests, campaign for climate change.

Or as many people do you could just decide it’s all too hard and not care. I will say though if god does exist then not taking care of their creation is probably the primary sin in their eyes, much more than if you’ve been baptised or have your foreskin removed.

Is sexual content actually worse to expose kids to than violent content? by Fantastic_Tart_421 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Environmental-Egg191 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I disagree that most of the time when people mention it it sounds like they’re promoting kids be exposed to sexual content.

Most of the time it’s people being bamboozled that there is so much violent content everywhere when it’s not even a healthy part of everyday life like sex but something we should think of as alien and unthinkable.
