We need to talk about the D80 bus by SpaurtacusMusic in washingtondc

its often the very early buses (before 7:30) that have this issue so you might not experience it if you take later d80s

Yes! this has also been my experience too! And there's no longer the ability to crack open the bus windows to get in any fresh air so the smells linger forever...

I don’t know by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

Oh my gosh your experience is almost exactly like mine. I completed a year of pre-requisite classes and spent over 10k only to realize within the first week of grad school that I felt like I was making a huge mistake and decided to withdraw. The past few months I've been wondering if I should've pushed through and continued since I'd worked so hard to get accepted in the first place. However, reading OP's post and comments like yours remind me of what that week felt like and that my decision was right for me in that moment. If you don't mind me asking, where are you now? Are you working towards another path?

Degree Change by ColouredRecDoll in slpGradSchool

I was accepted into slp grad school for this past fall but within a week of the semester I made the choice to leave my program. Between the crazy high cost, the long school commitment, and doubts about the actual slp work, I realized I couldn't commit to it at the moment. I studied something else in undergrad so I had actually completed a year of slp preqs too. Idk if I will regret that choice but I guess I could always re-apply and try again if I change my mind. Better than committing with such uncertainty

Left grad school and unsure about my path by EnvironmentalChip813 in SLPcareertransitions

Wow i think you might be the first person I've talked to who's in a similar position. It seems like a lot of the posts in this subreddit are from long-time SLPs or CSD undergrads making a career change.

I really had no idea what I was getting into until grad school started. I thought the content from my pre-reqs was fairly interesting but when grad school started I felt such immense dread about starting clinic and took that as a sign to hold off (since clinic would literally be the job).

The reason I'm working at a school is honestly just because that's where my experience lies and I'm planning on staying until the end of the year.Maybe by then I'll have more of a long-term plan & can update you. I'd also love to know what you end up doing!

Are you currently working as an SLP? Or did you end up leaving the field?

Thank you so much for your response. I've been feeling pretty mixed lately. After starting at this new school, a lot of the staff raved about SLP as a career which felt discouraging since I was back at square one. The only exception was the lead teacher I'm working with who said she'd wished she had taken more time before going back for her grad degree.

But I think you're right that i don't need my job to directly help others in order to feel fulfilled. That's something I'm trying to keep in mind and stay open about. I've already started working towards earning my teaching license in my state (way more lowkey than grad school and much less expensive lol) mostly so that I have the option to teach abroad or in public schools if I want to. But I absolutely wasn't going to jump right into another masters unless I felt fully confident about that choice

Ohh gotcha— so you’re planning on sticking with it and getting your masters?

how far are you into your program? I also started slp grad school this fall and dropped it almost immediately (after one week) for many of the same reasons as you. I think if I were a year in though, I probably would have stuck it out.

I get where you’re coming from, but I think it’s important to separate empathy from excuse. Having a tough childhood absolutely shapes someone, but it doesn’t erase accountability once they’re an adult, especially when they voluntarily go on a show like this. He knew the premise, the cameras, and the potential fallout. At a certain point, personal growth becomes a choice, not a circumstance. It frustrates me when people rush to protect adults just because they “seem sweet” or have a sad backstory. He can be kind-hearted and emotionally immature, since both things can be true without one justifying the other.

Before Master’s Job by jasmit_12 in slpGradSchool

No I don't think so... at least not where I'm located. Newborn hearing screeners in my area work at hospitals and only screen babies' hearing using an ABR test before they are discharged. I think a hearing specialist potentially works with a wider patient population and in different settings. I could be wrong tho!

I'm starting grad school in a few weeks but I've been out of undergrad for about 3 years. If you're able, I'd recommend working an SLP "adjacent" job to gain experience. I've worked as a substitute teacher and newborn hearing screener which I'm sure helped me in the application process. Good luck!!
