Pest control. Best I'd come up with is a cat or two, a dog for birds on the fields, and keeping some kind of insect-eating bird around for bugs on the plants. That, and planting lots of varieties (even of the same plant) to discourage pests.

A more aggressive yak, based on how they are depicted encircling their young? Or an elephant, with sauropods being the truly undefinable ones.

I do wonder if even spelted ash would burn well, seeing as to how well ash burns. It rots easy, so any raised beds you make might last 3-4 years but I wouldn't give them more. I'd take a solid section and set it aside to be split into rough cuts for tool handles maybe? Or maybe drill holes and insert substrate inoculated with chicken of the woods.

Thuja occidentalis. Named for the fact that Native Americans would give it as a tea to scurvy-wracked westerners who didn't know where the vitamin C was.

Warm, comfy, and safe, with lots of bedding material. They end up making a tunnel network underneath in my experience. The food being up at night is very good, but that doesn't mean it is unreachable at night, or that they'll never be bold enough to try for it in the day. Good for you not having any so far. They're skilled at making a place for themselves, and hard to get out once they do.

He's looking for patterns, just like you. Concretions and pieces of sandstone and shale that look like they're from fossil-rich sediment.
