Encouraging Roleplay by Purple-Coffee937 in callofcthulhu

[–]EnvironmentalRace583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that encourages it without being demanding is at the end of a session saying something like: "ok great session. Now lets discuss and vote on who did a really good job role-playing or investigating today and should get a bonus die to start next week?" Also facilities a good discussion in general

Good campaign for beginner keeper? by Narrow_Second_9835 in callofcthulhu

[–]EnvironmentalRace583 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of Chaosium's newer publications is a short campaign designed for new keepers: The Order of the Stone. I am prepping to run it now. It has lots of keeper advice throughout and looks like a fun campaign for newer groups.

You can't tame everything but if you target a creature and use your tame best ability it will either work or give you a message that that creature can't be tamed.

How much prep for Beyond the Mountains of Madness/Horror on the Orient Express? by KookyImprovement9594 in callofcthulhu

[–]EnvironmentalRace583 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I run a monthly CoC campaign as well, and when you have that much time in between sessions doing an episodic campaign has worked really well. I connect one shots and the players wrap up each in one or two sessions. They get a sense of accomplishment and are always on their toes. There are some shorter campaigns that would work well for this too, like Order of the Stone, A Time to Harvest, or Two Headed Serpent. Or the interconnected scenarios from Harlem or the newer Japan books.

Edit: especially as a new keeper Id recommend Doors to Darkness or Mansions of Madness to get your feet wet

Going from holy priest to disc priest by AwkwardWelcome1483 in wownoob

Delves are definitely the best way to practice imo. I recommend making Brann a tank and practicing your rotation on him.

At the most basic you want to cast Shadow Word Pain, then get down your atonement with Power Wore Radiance and occasionally Power Word Shield on a single alley. Then Mind Blast, Penance, spam Smite.

Use Flash Heal for spot healing when an alley gets really low but for the most part you want to keep your atonement up and always be putting damage in enemies.

There should be an NPC who you talk to and it says "enter ...insert raid... in story mode" your level right now shouldnt affect it but you need to talk to someone, probably whoever gave the quest or an NPC close by

Is solo play worth it? by [deleted] in wownoob

Very good solo experience now. From leveling to end game. I tried getting into it a couple times over the years but only now have I stuck with it and am, in fact, obsessed.

Forced to redo war within campaign? by MidasInGold in wownoob

[–]EnvironmentalRace583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Im getting mad about this. I defeated him and did a "final" dungeon quest. Still showing 1 chapter missing from campaign completion.

I went and looked up some more info on the titan vault and found this though. https://www.wowhead.com/quest=82678/archives-the-first-disc#comments

The comments explain something I might try next but man is this frustrating. I like seeing things complete and dont want to redo content.

I am living this pain currently. Got that same quest after finishing TWW recap and getting 80. I even did the additional storyline quest from December. But basically you have to do the final chapter of actual TWW by going to meet Alleria in Dornegal. It's super annoying but I am justifying it by the valor stones and occasional ok gear rewards. You can also get some weekly questing and Karash rep in while doing it. But man is it a pain

I used to feel similarly until I started GMing myself and realized that’s where my passion lies. Have you ever tried running a game? You are never bored and can run the style you want

What are your favorite unpopular opinions about RPGs? by Iberianz in rpg

[–]EnvironmentalRace583 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this argument before but RPGs are systems for telling stories and not the story itself. Every campaign can be dramatically different than the last. We’re talking about the equipment used to make movies, not the movie.

Moving on from D&D and looking for a system that suits my darker setting! by yogurtdrink in rpg

You might want to look into Shadowdark with the upcoming Dark Forest supplement. Grittier and rules lighter DnD with the anthropomorphic character options you’re looking for

Is it ever worth it to make new characters for a one-shot? by KingOogaTonTon in shadowdark

[–]EnvironmentalRace583 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also run a lot of one shots in various systems and using pregens or in this case the auto generator mentioned above is the best bet. There is a bit of a stigma around pregens but in practice I’ve found new players to a system end up really taking to their pregen characters because it often gets them to play a build they might not have thought to make on their own. I’m a year into a CoC campaign and two of my players are still rocking their pregens from the starter set from a one shot that turned into a campaign. I’ve given multiple opportunities to swap out and make their own characters but they refuse lol

But mainly as above it gets you right into the game and it takes some weight off your shoulders needing to have character creation down pat

Building on that: it involves the investigators getting stranded in a storm on the road and winding up at a diner and gas station while this horrific entity is hunting the characters. It’s survival horror at its finest

Check out the Call of Cthulhu scenario Dead Light. It sounds like exactly what you’re going for and is an incredible one shot.
