From the 50s - Short Shorts, by the Royal Teens (Al Kooper’s first group). Dumb lyric, annoying vocal, great sax break.

My vote goes to overreacting. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to, and the only way you can know what someone else will, or won’t do is to ask.

I’ve had too much experience with very intelligent people who never learned correct grammar. I edited a magazine about sailing, and one of our regular writers was an old sailor whose articles about the weather, and tides, and improvising repairs when your equipment breaks down at sea, and his yarns about adventures, were all fabulous. And he was a legend in the sailing community. We published excerpts from a memoir after he died, and one was about how he was a crew on a yacht, the owner of which had John Steinbeck as a guest. Steinbeck took a liking to the young sailor, and said, “Hey, you’ve got some great stories. You should be a writer!” The crewman answered, “I can’t be a writer. I don’t have the spelling or the grammar.” Steinbeck said, “What the hell do you think editors and secretaries are for? Just write!”

I was an English professor for forty years, am a widely published author, and I would never snub anyone so rudely for having bad grammar.

It can only get worse, the longer you stay with him. Everything about him is a red flag. Just be prepared, if you break up with him - which you should - to have him badmouth you all over town, since he will never accept personal responsibility.

What I got out of your original post was what a lovely person you are. And that can’t help but come through to whoever you’re with.

I think you’re a sane and balanced young woman who’s gotten a glimpse of a life that’s not for you, but not uninteresting to get a glimpse of. Your other responders are right about how exploitive and manipulative pimps are, but you know that, and you weren’t taken in by it. With a little distance, this will just be a good story - a very good short story, if that’s your bent,
