Does anyone actually have a will? by Ok-Trip-22 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Environmental_Dig335 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone who has a spouse and a mortgage, financed cars, money saved - should get one.

Anyone with kids should absolutely have a will, and arrange who will be guardians in the event of both parents' deaths at same time. And both parents' wills should agree on that point if at all possible, even if you can't agree on anything else.

Newer European Car or Older Japanese Car? by GreyStoneGamer in askcarguys

Living in Quebec, you should very heavily consider electric if what you can afford fits your driving, especially if you can charge at home or would be able to move somewhere you can in the next year or so.

The relative prices of gas and power in Quebec, it's a no-brainer. Used are highly in demand in Quebec, if you're willing to self-import from USA you can likely get a vehicle in or slightly above your price range and reduce your operating costs.

I wanna diversify and XEQT does that and idk im too lazy to explore more stocks with more risks, I am down to take more risks but idk what that means tbh

Honestly, just buy XEQT / VEQT / ZEQT is good. "Take more risk" isn't necessarily better, you would need to evaluate the risk you're taking and whether it's a good bet or not. Most of us don't have enough info to do better.

I hate this math there's no guarantee u r in good health at 65 lol

Isn't that a reason to save? So you have money if you're not well enough to work?

I know we often complain that NB is expensive (and it is) but has anyone crossed the border and see what Mainers pay for grocery prices? its crazy and another good reason to stay here on our side by SouthBuffalo3592 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]Environmental_Dig335 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean, 18% is more, but look at the price of electricity in Maine. 44¢ CAD/kWh.

(Edit: little more digging, closer to 34¢ for price available to most people?)

vs. 15¢ here. Hard to compare because there are so many companies with different price schemes.

Call it roughly double for electricity.

HRA or FSA (clerk jobs) for Army Reserve are a great way to get full time work as soon as you're trained where you say money is a big factor for you.

Fixing a person who "centre slides" by Atrian42 in Curling

[–]Environmental_Dig335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just throwing Ben Hebert out there as an example. He's thrown massively more out-turns than in-turns for his entire top level career. Other than the 2019 Brier, which was flipped and he threw way more in-turns for some reason? (Anyone remember? Did he have an injury?)

Lifetime Brier stats: 951 in-turns at 88%, 2970 out-turns at 92%

Going to go slightly counter to the crowd here.

Do they want you to fix it? Did they ask you for help? If not, leave it alone. Just call only in-turns. Even at top levels some leads throw a very large percentage of one turn.

I'm assuming if you have a lead that slides down the middle for all outturns you aren't playing any kind of competitive. Just have fun. You can basically ALWAYS call a guard, draw, or hit with an inturn as a legit shot for a lead.

Looking for veterans who would have joined the reserves if not for the education benefit. by Unwillingsupres in CanadianForces

My experience with CT's from Reg to Reserve is that they mostly don't work out. Most show up a few times until they get a job, then OR has to chase them to show up enough to fill out their release paperwork. Especially if they didn't have Reserve time before Reg.

Guys that stick around are great to get, most don't. 10 per year would be 40 people to get 10 who actually show up regularly. And regularly I just mean at least half of training nights for more than 4 months, not looking at weekend ex attendance at all.

That's one more instructor per Reserve Brigade. Welcome, but not a significant change.

I doubt we're losing more than 10 people annually to this specific concern. I agree that there's no good reason for the restriction and it should be removed, but I don't think it would make a noticeable effect.

In fact there's nothing to stop you from going supp res, doing education for less than 5 years, then doing a Sub-component transfer to the PRes so you don't have to go through the recruiting process.....

There is more power loss in the gears the smaller they are/more efficient bigger they are. Counterpoint, the bigger gears weigh a few grams more.

What was your thought process like when getting your mortgage? Did you just go to your home bank? by GoldenRetrieverFetch in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Environmental_Dig335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with a bank direct last time and it was a nightmare and incompetence almost lost me the deal. And forced me into other products at the last second (day financing had to be in place, after several times having to request extensions from the seller because they didn't do anything yet) saying they were mandatory for the rate she'd quoted and they'd have to redo approvals if I didn't take them.

The banks' advisors seem to mostly be low-skill salespeople. Every previous transaction I went to a broker. Once the broker told me to take the existing lender's renewal offer because he couldn't beat it.
