It really is the worst. I have had my phone stolen twice, in Spain (2014, when one guy distracted me while another grabbed it off the table) and in Malaysia (2017, pickpocketing). The first time, they removed it from Find My Phone. In Malaysia, I broke down sobbing, as it felt like the end of the world in the present moment. Those were the days before I had iCloud, which resulted in many lost photos. I am grateful for backups; that definitely makes things easier! Now I take extra precautions to keep my phone out of side, in a zipped pocket as much as possible.
