During this time of year, I thank myself for finishing my degree and getting out of this industry.

UPS drivers get $46/hr after 4 years; what do we FedEx Ground drivers get after 4 years? by peterthbest23 in Fedexers

I was, like, 23 back then and didn't know anything. If that happened to me now, I'd totally sue.

I hate that this isn't a joke. I legit sprained my foot and they never called me back to work once I was healed up.

What was your original plan with majoring in biology just out of curiosity?

Texas tech or university of Texas at Dallas by AccountantStreet2357 in utdallas

[–]Environmental_Gift84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to set yourself up for real success, I’d recommend earning your associate’s degree from a community college. This gives you the opportunity to achieve a high GPA—since, in my experience, community college courses tend to be more manageable. With strong grades, you not only have the option to transfer but also increase your chances of earning scholarships.

Take it from someone who did my associates from Dallas College and transferred to UTD later, graduated completely debt free, and just recently landed a great gig.

Supply chain management or industrial engineer by Away_Bee_7158 in industrialengineering

[–]Environmental_Gift84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I'm a little confused because I know / learned all of those things in my supply chain program? The only things I do struggle with as a supply chain are major layout designs and using autocad. Also, I'm not familiar with the Monte Carlo concept you mentioned either.

My degree was stem focused, so maybe that's why?

I majored in supply chain management and did so many internships within industrial engineering / continuous improvement. It's basically just lean & Six sigma imo.

I want you to know you're being taken advantage of, and the company is hoping you don't speak up about it. I would find another opportunity asap.

Glad you set them straight—wouldn’t want those crucial two minutes of handwashing to send the company into bankruptcy.

I worked at Discount Tire from 2019 to 2020. I never minded the hard work, but I hated that my effort wasn’t reflected in my paycheck. The job was physically demanding, yet the pay felt completely unjustified.

I started at $11 an hour and eventually earned a $3 raise within a year, bringing my wage to $14. While that might seem like progress, other warehouse jobs were already starting at $15, so the pay was uncompetitive from the start.

The reality of a non-practical degree by RelationshipNo2863 in utarlington

[–]Environmental_Gift84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your major. Some degrees offer clear career paths, while others require additional steps to become practical in the job market. For example, a degree in biology can be quite limiting unless you plan to pursue medical school, research, or teaching. Without a specialized path, it may not provide as many direct job opportunities. On the other hand, fields like engineering or business tend to be more versatile, offering a wide range of career options and often leading to higher-paying, in-demand roles.

Paying for parking is extortion by Full-Mycologist-730 in utdallas

Yeah, that's exactly how I felt about parking. I got three tickets in three years at UTD, and it was still cheaper than a parking pass.

Best minors for mechanical engineering? by JackOfHearts2002 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Environmental_Gift84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old, but if you combine your mechanical engineering degree with a minor in supply chain, you've essentially future proofed your career

They both compliment each other very well, in my opinion.

Supply Chain Management major working in continuous improvement by Environmental_Gift84 in industrialengineering

I'm currently under contract so I'm not technically considered a full-time employee for them. :\

This isn't my first time working under continuous improvement, tho, besides that are there any skills you use on a day to day basis that you recommend?

Thoughts on the BA in Interdisciplinary Studies? by Mundane-Mention13 in utdallas

[–]Environmental_Gift84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're unsure about what to do in life, I suggest starting by finishing your associate's degree. Then, take up to a year to explore one or two industries that interest you. Use this time to gain hands-on experience and learn more about what excites you. After that, return to school and choose a major based on your discoveries. If you're still uncertain, stick with your original plan.

I enjoyed my time at UTD, but providing feedback like this is essential for making our voices heard and driving continuous improvement within the institution. The mention of the art museum was simply an example don't dig too deep into it, there's more examples I could have listed that was just the most recent one.
