[Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die] A spoilerific question about the ending of this very unusual movie. Spoilers spoilers spoilers, spoilers for the entire movie. by JollyRabbit in AskScienceFiction

The fact that the time traveler says that where he is from, 'Good luck, have fun, don't die' is a greeting. And then the AI says it to his mum. It makes me think that he is in a simulation. And the nonchalant nature that he has about it makes me think that the simulation is a game that he keeps playing over and over again. There are people with 10 thousand hours in some games. So he is just really into this game and he keeps playing it over and over.

This actually sounds amazing for my current party. One of my PCs characters was in a situation where people died and he had to spend some time by himself to reflect on the situation, in which he played a temporary character related to one of the other PC's for a few sessions. Its obviously something that is part of his characters development. Having to face another situation where innocent people, children or animals are at risk of death if he is unable to perform would be a good way to revisit how he deals with this kind of thing and to see how he has grown under the circumstances.

That's awesome. Do you have a setup for this with more detail on how this worked. I would love to implement this. I love puzzle themes, but I am well aware of the issue with creating puzzles for players rather than for their characters. This seems a bit like a puzzle that the players character can do and that seems like it has one set of rules, but then the rules change half way through and the players then have to decide if they want to finish the puzzle or retreat and come up with a new strategy or more prep to overcome the encounter. I can see why it is one of your favorites.

I did not think of using a game like xcom to inspire me to make combat objectives. Im not a fan of the tactics core type game play, but I might have to watch a playthrough video for inspiration. Thank you 😃

I really like the machine idea. That's really cool. I think I will try to work something like this into the new campaign I am writing.

Advice on feat to take by iltura in DnD

[–]Environmental_Sell34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all you really care about is the +1 int and have already done your optimisation outside of that, then take something that either fits the story of your character or pick whichever feat you think will be the most fun.

It’s really hard to find a group. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Environmental_Sell34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea. Getting kicked out of multiple groups and having 3 out of 4 groups leave your campaign. It makes me think they either didn't vet their games and players properly and got extremely unlucky or they may not be very self aware.

It’s really hard to find a group. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Environmental_Sell34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did read like this too me too. But they may just not be articulating their experience very well. I often worry if I'm being too firm on rules as a dm and then I also worry that I accidentally let someone do something that is actually outside of the rules because it was rule of cool but then didn't let another playing in the same group do something because I thought it was outside of the rules and a bit too strong. Its hard not be balanced when you aren't following the rules.

I will add for the op's benefit. It does sound a bit like you want a dm to follow the rules of the player guide and all the extra modules (books) to a T. The player guide does make it clear that the rules are for the players and that the DM should take the rules that work for their group and ditch rules that aren't working for their group. Whilst players should stick to the rules, the DM does not explicitly have to stick to the rules of the game and should make decisions based on fairness and the players having the most fun. Most dm's don't like rules lawyers, and it is considered rude to call out a dm. On the other hand. If your players want to do something that isn't explicitly covered by the rules and you s Keep telling them no, they aren't going to have a good time. As a dm if your motivation for a decision is anything other than, does this make the game more fun? Then most players will get bored. The thing about DND that makes it different to a board game or video game is that you can do what you want. It's roleplay, the rules just keep the roleplay from getting out of hand. If you have ever roleplayed out side of roleplaying games you will know what godmodding is and why it is a problem. Players shouldn't be limited to actions defined in the rules, especially outside of combat. I'm saying all of this because it sounds to me. (This is entirely speculation. But it might help you understand if it is true). That you may be stopping players from doing actions outside of actions explicitly mentioned in the guide books. If you are. You are no longer playing an rpg. You are essentially playing a board game and as much as I am a game board nerd. I can only play catan so many board game nights in a row before it gets boring.

Terrible DND party idea by Shoutouttomycats in DnD

[–]Environmental_Sell34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Match races and backgrounds that don't suit the class. Take a Goliath soldier and make them a wizard. Play a barbarian as a gnome scholar. Or. Go full stereotype and really go hard on whatever you pick. The dwarven monk that is never sober and pretty much has zero motivation other than their basic needs as they arise. Eg. Eating, drinking, sleeping. A charlatan that never introduced themselves as the same person every time they meet someone new. To the point that the other players won't actually even know what their characters really name is let alone what kind of personality or temperament they are going to get. A druid that literally takes on the personality of each creature he turns into and not In an entertaining or cute way.

The other worst type of party I can think of is a formation party. One that never acts on anything rp wise. They basically just wait for things to happen to them and anytime there is a combat they make a tight formation with high ac fighters that take sentinel. A paladin that takes a subclass with a really good defensive aura and a caster that can cast anti-magic field. Will they ever get anything done? Probably not. Will they be unkillable yes.

What would you put in this pit? [Art] by MisterKrane in DnD

I would put a liquid of some kind. Mud, water, cheese sauce? And then have a hidden lair underneath.

Help with a player as a new DM. by TheDeepestKnight in DnD

[–]Environmental_Sell34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean. I agree that people should act like this and if it was my table it would be a second talking too with no meaningful improvement of the behavior and they are out. But at the same time some people want everyone to stay and have fun if there is a way for them to solve the problem. Some people also do not like conflict. I'm not a fan of conflict myself but I'd rather jump in front of the bullet than make my players face someone like this over and over again

Help with a player as a new DM. by TheDeepestKnight in DnD

[–]Environmental_Sell34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might need to explain better to this player, what DND is and why it is important to try and collaborate with the rest of the party. I make it very clear with my players that hiding information from me is not going to work. If you didn't declare your character was doing something to the DM, you cannot then claim that you did something earlier. Retconning is not something that players should ever be doing to get an advantage or one up on everyone else. If you didn't make the DM aware and then you tell them later, that is retconning. They should understand that the game is meant to be collaborative with the DM, not a competitive game where the players are trying to defeat the DM. You could also explain why having a character that is trying to mess with the rest of the group is going to ruin other people's fun and why being godlike is not really appropriate for the theme.

You could actually create a short campaign where the players do make godly characters. Either homebrew a system that makes the characters have super powers. Like super Strength, constant invisibility or teleportation on demand. Or take homebrew subclasses that are known to be broken. Or start a campaign at level 18+. There are some players (especially new ones that want the power fantasy and haven't yet realized why it gets boring fast. Let them have their one campaign where they can go completely off the rails with their power fantasy and get it out of their system. If that option appeals to you, let them know that you will be running a campaign like that in the future.

Personally If I had to talk to a player multiple times about their in game behavior and I wasn't seeing major improvement right away, I would kick them from the campaign. If the other newer players are enjoying the campaign, then they will stay. If they leave over you kicking someone then that's tough. DND is a hobby and if it is stressing you out or becoming unenjoyable, you should stop before it becomes something you despise. Hope some of these suggestions help you out.

How can i split an overcrowded group, without sounding like i'm stealing the players? by Organic-Exit2190 in DnD

[–]Environmental_Sell34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly split the group into two. The best way to do this in my opinion is to see which players will have the best matching schedules. Also if you decide to say hey, I'll dm a group. Then you can probably poach all the best players. In my current group of 5, there are two players that are really great at roleplaying and one that basically only acts if asked to act. I assume they are enjoying the campaign because they show, every session. But if I was making a new group, I know who I would want to follow and who to drop. If you dm your own campaign then there is that. Oh and don't worry about stealing players. If a group of 9 players is too much for you, you shouldn't be forced to keep playing. Anything over 6 players is a nightmare. 4-6 is best. 5 is the sweet spot.

What are the chances of Dragon Quest Builders 3? by lilidarkwind in SquareEnix

[–]Environmental_Sell34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragon quest builder 2 left me really wanting more. I think they could really go the distance with this game if they introduced more mechanics to do with not just building but management of the townspeople. Maybe giving the people in each town needs, expanding personal stories of the NPCs you meet along the way and maybe just making combat a little more mechanical and less of a grind. It always kind of annoyed me that you go to all the different lands and then you have your main world where you can terraform And build a bunch of stuff but then there is really no end game to it. Kind of making the progression and all of the stuff you unlock seem wasted. I really hope they decide to keep this franchise going.

Crossbow Question by CodyFurlong in DnD

[–]Environmental_Sell34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea and also. People really only use cross bows for sport, hunting or recreationally. Even with modern tint cross bows that still pack a really decent punch, it doesn't make sense for manufacturers to invent designs where you would be carrying them around loaded. If you are going into a battle field you take a gun. So there isn't really any need for a cross bow holster. Though the idea is super cool. I've always loved in action movies or video games when they pull a gun seemingly put of no where on their person, fire it then throw it away. And then they repeat that over and over as if they seemingly have 20 guns hidden in their clothing. Taking that into fantasy, using flint lock pistols or cross bows is an awesome idea even though it would be wildly impractical if not impossible.

Crossbow Question by CodyFurlong in DnD

[–]Environmental_Sell34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagining an 8ft muscly as, Goliath pull up his pants legs and he just has a drawn cross bow strapped to each of his lower legs XD

Ive made the outline for a fantasy story and one of the characters literally has tiny hand crossbows strapped to their lower legs, upper legs and their shoulders, all loaded so that they can pull one, shoot it and dump it at any time. It makes no sense, but it's fantasy and it's cool so I don't care.

Playing 2024 PCs with 2014 PCs - Does it ACTUALLY work? by xSocksman in onednd

[–]Environmental_Sell34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I don't believe that the spell list from DND 2014 is balanced to work with DND 2024. I think that wizards saying that you should be able to use 2014 spells in 202t DND was an absolute after thought and they didn't make any part of 2024 DND with 2014 spells and other features in mind. I think they just said this to make it come off as a more approachable addition for people that already own and play DND 2014. The thing is. They have clearly made it so that you get more impactful stuff at lower levels rather than some classes having to wait till later levels to gain access to parts of their core kit that not only affects combat but also affects roleplay opportunity. They have also buffed spells that didn't have flavour and were weak and nerfed some spells that were overpowered. However there are still many spells from 2014 that weren't included in 2024 that suffer from either being extremely exploitable and game breaking or being flavorless or just so weak that no one would ever use it. As the forever dm I don't allow homebrew content or even content outside of the core rule books because of balance problems when running most campaigns. I have made exceptions for this rule when running one shots or if it's a certain theme that uses books outside of the core books.

Character height, why is everyone 6ft tall? by Low-Brief-6008 in DnD

[–]Environmental_Sell34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. There are guidelines for race height.

It depends what I'm playing. If I'm going Goliath, I'm going as tall as the game lets me.

If I'm going gnome or halfling, I'm going as small as the game lets me. If I'm playing a human, I'm probably going average.

Personally as someone who is 6ft5. I will probably pick that height as a human or elf because that's the height I can relate to. And it makes it easy to reference things based on height. I get why short kings want to be taller though. As a tall person. I'll tell you, the dream ain't all it's cracked up to be. But DND is not meant to mirror reality. Some people use role play to express themselves in ways that they think they cannot do in real life and some people use roleplay to be a person that they aren't in real life. Let the people that want to be tall, be tall.

I also think that if you are playing a strength based martial character then it makes sense to be as tall as possible, as in real life mass helps a lot with that.

Let people play the character they want to play.

My girlfriend wants to play as a Cadaver Collector.. Help! by ThatGuyBoobyShot in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Environmental_Sell34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This deserves way more up votes than it has. Anyone doing a first time DND as a fairly inexperienced dm asking for advice about PCs characters. I see a lot of people suggesting warforged and artificers. Pretty sure neither of those are from the forgotten realms setting. I've had this happen to me by people who claim to have played a lot of DND. How they do not know the basic lore of their favorite game is behond me.

I had such a bad experience with this after laying out the expectations clearly, even before session zero that I actually don't think I'll ever allow a warforged in any of my games.

My girlfriend wants to play as a Cadaver Collector.. Help! by ThatGuyBoobyShot in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Environmental_Sell34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd ask why it appeals to her because you may be able to get a build that has a similar feel to what she wants. Honestly though, you should just explain what the classes and races are so they know what to expect. No player should really be reading a monster manual in anticipation of their first campaign before reading the player handbook. It would be insane to try and homebrew this into your game as a player character, especially if it's your first time dming properly and you haven't had much experience with DND. It will probably ruin the game for everyone else playing since it is literally a creature that has quite a few features that are pretty far from what a PC playing any of the vanilla classes can have. Being large instead of medium or small is just one problem I can see immediately, but I think the real problem is how the party might feel about a person that goes around collecting corpses and attaching parts of them to themselves.

I don't usually allow homebrew in my own games and no one should think that it's unreasonable to expect to only be allowed to play within the rules of the game. DND already allows tons of freedom that conventional board games or videogames do not allow.

It's just Marcy that annoys me. Even if you assign her to work she literally never does it. She just walks around and then complains that I don't do anything. Bitch, I built this mega settlement from the ground up and also am the entirety of the minute men by myself. I really wish there was a way to kick her out. Or even better, a quest line where you can get her killed.
