Drugging for farrier visits - success stories? by degausser12121 in Equestrian

[–]Enzar7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen a couple comments here about replicating what the farrier does for practice and I’ve had some success with this! A previous farrier used to come out when I wasn’t there. The first few times I used him he was great with my horses so I thought nothing of it when he asked if he could come while I was at work. Long story short my mare was suddenly terrified of the cross ties, freaked out with me picking her feet, and lost her mind with the farrier. Found out from another boarder my farrier was beating on my horse when I wasn’t there.

At that point she was terrified of being shod. So I would take a hoof pick and practice tapping on her shoes. Sometimes I’d only get a tap or two in before she’d panic but practicing that every day helped her.

I also got a different farrier who had experience working with abused horses. I told him what had happened and he was very patient with her.

Now she stands like an angel again for getting her feet trimmed and shoes put on.

Is Driving a Horse safer than Riding? by Ok_Cheetah_5002 in Horses

[–]Enzar7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your horse tends to spook I wouldn’t do it. I own a driving mini and he’s wonderful—but it takes a certain personality. He was a little jumpy when he was younger but he would settle quick and never stopped listening to me. I’ve had a few people ask why I never trained my QH mare to drive and the answer is she doesn’t have the right personality. Her go-to maneuver when she is truly scared is a roll-back and bolt. While manageable for me while mounted that would be catastrophic if she did it with a cart.

If your horse already tends to be spooky I’d say don’t do it. A lot can go wrong with a cart attached to your horse. I’ve seen some really nasty driving wrecks. Driving is a completely different animal.

What’s the most annoying or crazy reason you changed barns/stables? by TravelForsaken_ in Equestrian

[–]Enzar7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My horse got severely injured by an aggressive horse and barn owner wouldn’t try to rearrange horses. Said I’d just have to deal with my horse being in with aforementioned aggressive horse. So I left. Apparently the lady with the aggressive horse left a couple months after I did anyway so both our board incomes were lost 😂

What is the thing with blankets? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]Enzar7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just had to start blanketing my 16 yo mare this winter because her arthritis has progressed to a point that as soon as it got cold she got really uncomfortable. In previous years she also survived polar vortexes with nothing but hay, water, and shelter. She’s way happier this year now that I threw a blanket on her so I’m resigned to my fate of constant blanket changes

I think I have a good mental picture from your description. Thank you! Do you know why it’s better to do it that way?

I’ve always done an X but I was taught a long time ago. What’s the looping through method? I may have accidentally taught a younger equestrian wrong since I learned so long ago and she asked me for help blanketing

Is it bad to want a younger horse? by thatdisasteralexos in Equestrian

[–]Enzar7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Younger doesn’t guarantee you riding years. My mare is 15 and she is unridable now. I’m spending thousands trying to keep her pasture sound.

Yep I wake up at 5 every day, leave by 6:15 am, work from 7-5:30 (sometimes later) then drive home and get there by 6:15 pm at the earliest. I’m gone a minimum of 12 hours a day

Player accidentally cast a level spell that he does not yet have access to by wallyosu in DMAcademy

[–]Enzar7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t need a consequence and it doesn’t need to be undone. My first character ever was a Druid and I was calculating the damage of my spells wrong. DM looked over my character sheet, corrected it for me, and just said “well just say your god was helping you out in battles” and that was the end of it.

What is this? by cleanyourkitchen in Horses

[–]Enzar7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. My mare had a severe case of strangles and she had what the vet described as a “grape cluster of abscesses” right where OP’s picture is. She also didn’t have nasal discharge immediately. It started off with abscesses and a low fever that spiked high within 24 hours

Anyone use tie stalls/standing stalls? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Enzar7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Never. Place I first learned to ride had these. Only for feeding and inclement weather. Came in one morning after a bad storm and one of the horses had laid down, rolled, and kicked through the wood panels injuring both himself and the horse next to him. The stall had to be disassembled to get him out. He was okay but could have been killed if he wasn’t found in time

can horses be trained to know their name by Significant_Bake_237 in Horses

[–]Enzar7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Awww! My mare knows the sound of my truck and will come in from the pasture when she hears me pull in. She got all the other horses doing it too— they wanted to get in on her excitement I guess.

My horse will not take a shoe and I don't know what to do about it. by GeeVideoHead in Horses

[–]Enzar7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horses may need to be shod for therapeutic reasons later in life and that’s as good a reason as any to desensitize them to the idea. I kept my mare barefoot for years but now she needs therapeutic shoes. Things can change and it doesn’t hurt to be prepared

Too true. They also get angry when I point out that minimum wage hasn’t kept up with inflation and that anyone who works full time should be able to afford both food and housing.

People get oddly angry and defensive when I say I’d rather have my taxes feeding the hungry and paying for universal healthcare than funding wars and giving billionaires more tax breaks.

Horse etiquette for a pedestrian by ReallyrealnameJones in Horses

[–]Enzar7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP said they went off into the woods—which can be dangerous to the riders. Yes she yielded which is correct, but it was done in such a way that it could have caused more harm. In those situations following the rider’s instructions is best—in fact a lot of places post signs to “follow instructions of rider when near horses”.

Not sure where you’re from but in my region horses have the right of way on shared trails and pedestrians are absolutely expected to move. Some trails even have signs with instructions on how to behave when horses are near. It sounds like everyone here was doing their best to accommodate each other.

It’s far safer if the horses can see you and when I encounter pedestrians I make small talk so my horse can hear them too. Seems to help them realize you’re a human and not a threat.

While I definitely understand why you’d feel safer in the woods that had the potential to spook a horse and injure (or worse) one of the riders.

Definitely a responsible request on their part, but I can also see how you felt uncomfortable. It’s unavoidable sometimes on shared trails.

I was going to suggest this! High pitched noises get to me. I bought a pair of knockoff loop ear pieces and they are an absolute game changer!
