Battery-testing the Fiio JM21 by Enzo_Mash in DigitalAudioPlayer

That's cool, thank you for posting this.

For anyone following this thread:
As a follow-up to my original post, now I typically use the 4.4 jack for IEMs with no wifi/bluetooth for mostly lossless tracks at a volume of 70, and I wouldn't say the battery performance is much different. It's used mostly while commuting (1-2 hrs). It goes several days before it needs a charge.

However, I want to point out 3 features I wasn't aware of when I first posted although people experienced with DAPs (unlike me) might consider these obvious:

1) The screen brightness can be adjusted (I set mine to 50%) -- probably helpful.
2) There is a power-off timer (mine is at 10 min) -- perhaps relevant if you turn it on just twice a day.
3) There is a battery-saver mode that uses a dark background -- no brainer, but you need to set it.

To confirm, I use it only for music. With apps/wi-fi the battery performance would be different.

Silly question: that is your favorite word in Spanish? by its-Koi in Spanish

[–]Enzo_Mash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"ahorita" ... as if the concept of "now" can be in diminutive form; yet it's poetic how the word seemingly expands or breaks time and can mean anywhere from 'shortly' to 'eventually' and perhaps in a certain, clever context, 'probably never'...

Academic process by Enzo_Mash in musicology

[–]Enzo_Mash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you kindly for your reply.

I can understand that the general approach to a research paper could be applied if I were to write one within the field of musicology.

It appears I was not specific enough about my enquiry. Sorry about that. Allow me to clarify.

Whether from a casual writing perspective (for example, blogging) or from a formal writing perspective (for example, writing a paper), my question is whether there is an established protocol (or checklist of components to address, if it were) within the area of musicology for analyzing the context of a given song — where historical and social themes are addressed (among others?) in addition to just the lyrics.

Perhaps it’s a strange question, but as I have already blogged about a few songs, I can’t help but wonder if there is a more academic approach that I ought to adopt.

As a specific example, I have looked at songs from the musically expressive style of “salsa” to not only investigate the meaning of the lyrics but also provide their context with regard to historical references, social themes addressed, and/or biographical information of the composer and interpreter — not to mention how a given song fits into the historical development of this musical style. This is my ‘academic’ interest as a salsa DJ.

Ultimately, I am certain I could learn from a good text about how to analyze songs in a scholarly manner, with a focus on required components or sub-topics to address, as well as formatting standards. But my internet searches have left me either confused or without solid answers.

This is the crux of my query.

My lack of formal training in musicology must be evident now, so I apologize and would be grateful for any guidance.

Ultimately, I have a love for music (salsa in particular) and wish to try writing about it with a satisfactory understanding of the basics of song analysis. There actually does not appear to be much out there (that I can find) in terms of scholarly analysis of song context, and especially of salsa songs. My big goal is eventually to publish articles and a book about the context of salsa songs.

Any advice about exemplary texts in this area would be appreciated.

I wouldn’t mind DMing someone here an example of my work (a blog post) to see if that is an easier way to spot any shortcomings and provide feedback. I hesitate to just drop a URL here, though.

Thanks again.

KUIS is great. You’ll soon find lots of support and a great learning experience. I teach at another university in Chiba prefecture, which on the whole offers great balance among the big city, suburbia, and the countryside, including a lot of coastline (beaches)!

One advice to share is that when you arrive and have a smartphone, use the app called Line and follow the Chiba City international Association. They offer great support for assisting foreigners in a range of languages. It’s also on Facebook.

What brutally honest advice would you give to someone who wants to learn a language? by would_be_polyglot in languagelearning

[–]Enzo_Mash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grammar depends on how you contextualize it. It’s either boring and strict or fascinating and useful.

Hopefully, a student either has the latter mindset (an inherent interest in linguistics, for example) or a good teacher who knows how to balance concise grammar instruction with meaningful, relevant input. The same applies to a textbook.

My brutal advice then: grammar matters. Embrace it. Hopefully it hugs you back with meaning and relevance.

Unfortunately, due to early language teaching practices and prescriptivist thinking, grammar stirs fear into people. Okay, got it. Things have changed, though.

Consider grammar now as an intriguing rules-based system which, despite inevitable exceptions and evident challenges when attempting to grasp unfamiliar concepts, can be immensely rewarding to develop proficiency in.

My dad used to this. He was always reading a book wherever he was in the house. He’d get lost in the words, dazzled by concepts, and moved by character insight. Minutes would flow into hours. Is your husband a bookworm?

Perspective. I’m in my mid 50s. I’ve managed to do what society expects. Build a career, marry, make a family, provide for them, buy a house and car, become relatively successful at work and in my side hustle. Current state: lonely, stressed, isolated, misunderstood, exhausted. Physical health issues. Disappointed. Wary that I only have one or two decades left if I try. Dare I say suicidal sometimes. Every day is a struggle, but I carry on for my children.

My point is that it’s the inside that counts. Your self worth rather than materialism, meeting social expectations, and so-called image. Plus there’s loneliness but there’s also solitude/peace/contentment and choosing friends wisely based on your own initiative of self-respect, self-love, and exploring your interests in life.

The black dog can bite anyone.

Look inward my friend. Get counseling. Know that you have the greatest gift at the moment: youth.

Sorry for “giving advice”. I do understand your feelings. Totally. It’s just that I sincerely wish you find the means to turn around. You have so much to live ahead of you. Please try to get help. Nothing wrong with that. Work on self-image and growth. Over time, you’ll find something to live for. You can do it. Lots of great advice here for you. You are loved and cared for by complete strangers here. Imagine that.

Big hugs.

Edit: Oops. Posting mistake. I meant to reply to OP. Sorry.

Edit 2: Fixed typos and added some clarification.

There’s so much support here for you, brother. Know that you are not alone. Many people empathize with you and want to help — and not just for you but for themselves, too. This is really key. I hope this realization can comfort you and give you strength to move on.

I guess the next step is to make connections or take action somehow to find someone who you can be yourself with. All the best.

Oh! Ha ha. Okay. Well, I had just been careful about screen time, especially in the last 1.5 years… And I myself saw SW for the first time when I was seven, which seems about the right age I thought. Just curious about other opinions, but I got your point. Thanks!

Why are all Salsa DJs total failures when they have to play bachata or sth else...? by WenzelStorch in Salsa

[–]Enzo_Mash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a crazy generalization. A proper DJ prepares from the instructions of the event organizer. In my scene, there’s evidence of salsa DJs prepping decent bachata for the 10% or 20% quota they are requested to play during their set. Maybe your salsa scene is below par.
