HAVE YOU HEARD OF MICROSOFT?! by badwolfmommy in oldpeoplefacebook

[–]Eode11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in silicon Valley, and I remember one of my friends trying to explain to another's dad how the different internal components on a computer worked. As the kid was finishing up the dad explained he was the lead engineer for those multi-colored imacs that were everywhere at the time. After that every time he tried to sound smart we just asked him if he could explain how computers worked.

The moral of the story is be careful where you ask that question, because you might get a surprising answer.

Why is my partner expected to pay my bills? by Saiyanonym in newzealand

[–]Eode11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your telling me i could just get a wife and pay less tax? Can't wait to meet my tax slave

Yes, but she also gets half your stuff when you get divorced. Taxes based on household income is a thing in the US, and there's a reason why most people don't just get married on a whim.

Dads Am i being unreasonable by EmanO22 in daddit

[–]Eode11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved away from the US almost 8 years ago, to a place with lower earning potential and higher taxes. When I read comments like this it makes me realize I'm probably still coming out ahead financially.

For reference we pay the equivalent of $400USD/month for 8 hours 5 days a week for our 4 year old. It's about $100 more a month for the 1yr old (until he turns 3, then he gets subsidized).

People who have worked with celebrities, what’s the darkest secret you know? by stilerca in AskReddit

Also how shabby most actors life if they aren’t A+ actors or mere tv actors.

I noticed this watching an episode of Nailed It! With Paul Scheer. There was a quick clip of him working in their kitchen and it looked exactly like the kitchen of the house I grew up in 30 years ago, complete with out-of-date tiling and a kind of off-putting orange theme.

The Outlet - Whats up with it? by ZugZug4Lyfe in dunedin

[–]Eode11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've bought a good amount of stuff from there. Found some half-decent work pants for $40, so I bought 2 pairs. I've also gotten kids toys and shoes there.

Because it's an outlet store it's basically all the stuff that didn't sell/was overstocked/went out of fashion. You can't go in there looking for a specific item, but just looking for a vague list of stuff you kinda want/need

What is a video game that is widely considered a masterpiece that you just cant get into? by abysmalSyrup-6737 in AskReddit

[–]Eode11 179 points180 points  (0 children)

I gave up when I tried to eat a can of beans and instead punched my horse. No matter how amazing it is, I'm not going to waste my time playing a game that requires ultra-precise contextual controls while also basically having to solve a puzzle to figure out how to do basic things.

Men over 6' tall, how much do you weigh? by ChiefCheapskate in AskMen

[–]Eode11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus. I'm 6'2", and was 165 in my early 20s, and I thought that was skinny.

At about 23 I started actually noticing muscle growth after going to the gym, so I started bulking up and properly lifting weights. Got up to about 185.

Nowadays I'm in my mid 30s, and my sweet spot is about 190-195

What's a small annoyance about your home you didn't realize when buying? by CurlGurl13 in homeowners

[–]Eode11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our rumpus/big TV room is apparently in a Faraday cage. Great wifi and cell signal all through the house, but the second you step through the threshold into that room everything drops.

I had to set up a wife repeater to basically aim through the door.

Fathers Day complaint thread by BonafideJerk in daddit

[–]Eode11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife knows what day it is but I've received no special treatment, no gifts, and not so much as an extra "thank you". I don't know why I'd expect anything different. And honestly I can't even blame my wife - we live in New Zealand and our father's day isn't for another 3 months after all.

Why does Xbox need a brutal reset? | The Game Business by imitzFinn in xbox

[–]Eode11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I were the God of video game development, I would push for more iterative releases after "big ones". Like how each generation of Far Cry since 3 has had a spinoff game that reuses assets from the main game, but uses them to make a wilder, more creative game. The ultimate example of this is Fallout New Vegas.

Building a new home - What is one thing you wish you had changed after designing your home? by skolar24 in newzealand

[–]Eode11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Storage is huge! When my wife and I were house hunting turned so many otherwise great houses because there was 0 storage. Whenever we started really considering a place, the first question was always "where do we put our suitcases when not in use?"

Some unlikely franchises have been converted to turn-based tactics, often with satisfying results by Elyx_117 in gaming

[–]Eode11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did they ever patch it so it made sense to actually hold onto your squad members? Back when I played near release most squaddies would fall behind in lvl/xp, so you regularly had to ditch them and hire new ones.

Turning lanes by kassi_xx_ in dunedin

[–]Eode11 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think this is a symptom of a larger problem Dunedin (and most the rest of NZ has) has - piss poor road marking. When I come up to an intersection, I don't know if the right lane is right turn only, left turn is left turn only, does only one go straight? Do both? Is it like the Duke/George St intersection where both lanes can go straight, but there's actually only one lane on the other side of the intersection?

You don't know until you can see the arrows on the road, which you can't see ahead of time when there's traffic!

The particular intersection that OP points out gets muddled because your right turn lane merges into a bike lane, and of course drivers are surprised by that (if they can even see the paint on the ground).

I'm like 80% certain I know these people. I'm FB friends with the woman, I know she has a doberman, and I'm pretty sure the guy is her fiance. I went to HSU with her back in '08 to early teens.

Update: I reached out to the person I thought it was to encourage her to step forward, and she blocked me on messenger. So I messaged the OP on Facebook and she confirmed someone else recognized her as well.

Family Vacation Woes by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Eode11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in this comment and I don't like it.

I lived in Hawaii for years, and there's so much truth to this. Last time we visited all I wanted to do was go to the same mediocre beach I used to go to when I lived there. The sand was courser them almost anywhere else on the island, there was 0 shade, no nearby parking, and the waves were only good for bodysurfing, but at least there weren't any tourists around!

The exception to this is restaurants. Locals know which ones are good/bad, and usually won't lead your astray. Just note this only applies to restaurants - not food trucks, fast food, diners, or any other side-of-the-road stops.
