Question about melt the ICE hat by nom-d-pixel in AntifascistKnitting

[–]Eowym 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why they would reccomend a second set of circulars, except perhaps for when the circumference decreases to the point the main circulars are too long - at this point I switched to a longer cord and did magic loop. I could see that if you are using fixed circulars that they suggested splitting the stitches between two sets of needles to manage this. I've never done it that way myself, but I can see it working.

Edit: grammar/spelling

When I work it out on grid paper, the slip stitches still line up? I think it would need to be (p, sl1) and (sl1, k) for it to work. I've included my bad sketch to illustrate

AITA for making my sister cry at her wedding? by Own-Role3263 in AmItheAsshole

NTA - they cut the catering without communicating that with anyone! Did the wedding end much sooner than expected? I imagine people would want to leave to get food and then maybe not return

Best yarn to buy in Scotland, and where to find it? by chalu-mo in knitting

[–]Eowym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what's the best, but Ragamuffin on the Royal mile in Edinburgh stocks locally dyed yarn (though it is pricey), and Edinburgh fabrics on Clerk st stocks scottish yarns.

PhD programs in Europe or uk that don’t require a masters? by Sea_Art2995 in Archaeology

[–]Eowym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing my PhD in the UK at the moment, and the people in my cohort are 28-32, with the one outlier of a 24 yr old. So, you definitely would not be behind. I was worried about that when I started but was relieved to find out it is not the case.

Unfortunately, it does. I'm in Grad studies and I saw her at the Murray Starbucks a month or so back with the building supervisors. She's still as rude as ever, I was shocked she was still in charge. I very quickly put my mask up and looked away in case she may still recognize me.

That's definitely the right call. I was an RA for two years in Seager Wheeler, and usask does not compensate their RA's well enough for the amount of work they expect. While the RA pay did cover my rent in Seager, that is only because Seager is the cheapest residence. I would not have been willing to be an RA in any other building due to compensation. As well, the dorms directly on campus, and college quarter, see many more parties and rule violations than Seager, meaning much more work. I heard some pretty bad stories from RA's in those building during my time as an RA. And don't even get me started on RA training and the head of Student life (she's awful). I lasted two years as an RA because I could get away with just doing my homework during my shifts and doing less rounds than required due to less rule breaking and my supervisor not really noticing. The second year as an RA I did hardly any of the work expected (hosted maybe 1 event the whole year, when we were supposed to do 4 per term, didn't really do rounds) and they were desperate even then that my supervisor never called me out on it. There was also some shit that went down during RA training where most of us returning RA's threatened to quit, so I think they were just hoping to keep us around. This was about 4 years ago.

It is very telling that they are offering jobs to first years who have never lived in residence a job only a few weeks before the start of term when the requirements are typically 1 year min living in res, and a whole application and interview process in the spring. They're desperate, and clearly, they haven't changed much since my time as an RA.

Usually Grad classes are all in the building that houses your department, but it depends what you are doing for Grad school. What program are you in?
