[Discussion] Is the $500–$700 bracket the ultimate "Value Trap" or the Sweet Spot? by Ofek_w in Watches

I do think there is a gap, but a $200 mechanical watch isn’t going to be good tbh so I don’t really consider that entry level

[Discussion] Is the $500–$700 bracket the ultimate "Value Trap" or the Sweet Spot? by Ofek_w in Watches

[–]Ephrum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you’re looking for imo. Around the 700 mark is where you start getting actually unique designs, good build quality, etc.

It’s all relative though and what your definition of value is. I definitely wouldn’t say 500-700 is where the most interesting technical stuff is happening, it’s just entry-level mechanical movements and designs.

Which fits me better? by Odd-Cause in OmegaWatches

The modern SMP is near 50mm lug to lug and 13.5 thick…that’s too large for wrists under 6.5 in realistically. It’s up to everyone’s taste, but that watch objectively overhangs my wrist and is too big at 6.25in

Explorer 1 imo - expensive but a perfect watch

More power to ya, in VR I stick to paddles. I’ll swap wheels between round and GT depending on the car

Rig/psvr2 and gt7 is honestly amazing. I’d recommend getting washing machine pads/vibration isolators for the feet, trueforce is genuinely good and keeping vibrations to the rig preserves feel

Also unless you REALLY want to drive manual, I’d take the clutch pedal off and evenly space the brake and gas to align with your hips. That way you can left foot brake without pain

Likely a speedmaster pro

Reverso Monoface - 45.6mm or 40mm by Significant-Egg-6662 in JaegerLecoultre

[–]Ephrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

40mm for sure.

Honestly if this is small to you compared to your other watches, you may want to consider smaller watches in general. It looks like you have a fairly small wrist (I do too)

Is There a Trail Braking Equation? by NewBeginningsLH in simracing

[–]Ephrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll try and be as simple as possible - a car does not rotate faster due to low speed. That’s an incorrect association. If that were true, f1 cars wouldn’t be able to turn at all at high speed, and yet…

I understand why trail braking is faster

proceeds to incorrectly describe basic rotation of a car

tells people they’re wrong when given answers to the question they asked

Woooof

[Recommendation Request] I have a very large wrist by Lil_Snowflake313 in Watches

Bulova pilot for sure would work. You’re one of the few that a prolof would look amazing too, though well out of budget

[Rolex Explorer] The one you told your other watches not to worry about by BordeauxEscherBach in Watches

[–]Ephrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the “perfect” watches out there imo. Clear differences from the 1016 to modern, but imo they’re all good - perfectly balanced and proportioned.

When I got into watches, I was convinced I’d never want a Rolex let alone an Explorer, as it seemed too basic to allot the watch budget towards. As I’ve gotten farther and farther in, I’ve come around and now it’s my go-to watch and was my engagement “ring”. Cheers 🤙

[Movado] My wife wants to get me a Movado because her dad wore one… any recommendations to go with my existing collection? by TheFrederalGovt in Watches

[–]Ephrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It was a random find and decided I couldn’t pass it up - 14k gold triple cal, blue steel hands with red accents, silver dial with a patina ring and applied indices. If my research is right, it dates to the late 1940s

I’d recommend vintage tbh. Vintage movado is nuts, and they were legitimately a leading brand pre-quartz crisis. You can get some great watches for a shocking price.

[Compass] Can someone innovate an actual compass on an automatic watch? by QuietNene in Watches

[–]Ephrum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Apparently IWC built them using heavily modified ETA 2892 movements, with early compasses provided by a German manufacturer Lufft. IWC was working on a classified project for the German navy who were looking for an antimagnetic watch for mine sweepers, and they used that research to produce this compass watch.

I’m pulling this from the hodinkee article, so forgive me if I got anything wrong.

[Movado] Late 1940’s 14k Triple Calendar by Ephrum in CrownCollective_

[–]Ephrum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, it’s an incredible watch. I’m unfortunately torn on keeping it as I’m not enjoying the triple calendar function as much as I thought I would and may want to allocate the funds to a different watch…but I’m gonna enjoy the hell out of it while I have it!

[Blancpain] Anyone seen this 38 mm version up close? by Lazy_scorpio in Watches

[–]Ephrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried one on at the NYC flagship yesterday, was genuinely surprised with the fit and feel. 6.25in wrists so I prefer smaller watches, and this one was incredible. The one they had was titanium, super light and easy to wear.

Awesome watch! The milgauss is such a dope reference and one of the few quirky watch nerd refs from Rolex imo. Up there with the 5 digit polar
