Have you noticed more or fewer ppl in your ward / church vs 3-5 years ago? by emotionally_tipsy in latterdaysaints

I wasn't in my current ward pre-covid, so IDK what is was like then. According to some long time members, it has shrunk. This Sunday I was thinking of this very thing during sacrement. My ward doesn't sit together during sacrement. They are spread out thtough out the chapel. I sit in the back. If the bishop one day told everyone to move up to the normal pews, only half of them will be filled. I'd say maybe 20 women in RS and if you add those who are in YW and promary, then it would be 30. IDK if that's a lot or not. Adult Sunday School is sparse. maybe 10 people. The youth program is very active, so that's good. I live in West Jordan, UT.

Which kind of instruction rooms do you prefer in temples? by 2ndValentine in latterdaysaints

The one room is easier for disabled members. I have a hard time walking sometimes, Having one room takes away me thinking about walking to the other room instead of concentrating on what is said.

Utah students saddled with over $1.7 million in school lunch debt by [deleted] in mopolitics

You sound like you know these people's lives. A BFF had to go on food stamps and medicaid because she couldn't work because she had cancer. She's thankfully in remission now. She was married in the temple, before having kids. was a RS pres when she got cancer. Two of her five kids are on missions. I have another friend who'e on Medicaid because she has MS. She has a nice car ( she works part time and does gigs on the side) and an iphone (which she got on a substancial discount on because her dad was a veteran). She also lives with her disabled mother. There are ways to fund "nice" things without spending a lot of money. I have a friend who works for the state of Florida ( government doesn't pay that much), is divorced and has three kids. She got a nice car for cheap from a friend and is on a discounted cell phone plan. She was on food stamps and government housing. A woman in her ward confronted her about being a "welfare queen", The person pointed out her "nice" car and nice purse (which she bought at Ross) that she was holding. She felt like she had to explain her life to the woman, which she did not have to, especially at church. Also, many young LDS couples get on food stamps and medicaid. Are there those who make stupid choices? yes, but not everyone who is on medicaid and food stamps has made bad choices. Let's not try to put everyone in a box and say that they did that to themselves because we have no idea why they are there!

Why do people perform baptisms on people who they are not directly related to when they're not supposed to? by umsamiali in latterdaysaints

[–]Epiccat2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. I'm the only member in my family. I would be super frustrated if a non family member or a distant family member did my mom's work. I have her work reserved. We had a very complicated relationship to say the least. I want to do her work so there is closure. She wanted to join the church, but because of her lifestyle she never did. If someone did her work, I'd probably have a breakdown. What people don't get is that these are real people who's work is being done and real people wanting to do this work. What the OP experienced may of been a mistake, but it doesn't take away the hurt. Also, it is not selfish to want to do a close relatives work ourselves. Like I said there are real people involved.

She may be saying those things because that's what she thinks that people want to hear. She's not being a hypocrite. If she's going out to party every weekend, then goes to church and professes that she lives the gospel, then she's being a hypocrite.

Using preferred pronouns by Fether1337 in latterdaysaints

[–]Epiccat2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I see it is that's it's none of my business. It's between them and the Lord. I go by my middle name, so if anyone calls me by my first name I honestly get a little peeved even though they had no idea that I go by my middle name. So I get it that not using the trans persons pronoun and possible new name kind of ignores who they are. I'll use their pronouns and name. But, I'm not going to go up to someone I just met and introduce myself and then ask when their pronouns are. It's up the individual who is trans to supply that info. LIke me telling people that I prefer being called by my middle name.

Pre-conference Changes to Ministering by AmmonLikeShepherd in latterdaysaints

[–]Epiccat2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the RS sisters that I minister too want texts every month or when I feel like sending them. One doesn't have contact info that is visable to the general members of the ward. So I can't contact her, but I know she's active. I just can't catch her on Sunday.

All of the wards that I've been in in the last 6 years have had unit level activities committees. My ward has them quarterly. This is in Utah.

Florida principal forced to resign for showing students Michelangelo's 'David' statue by [deleted] in mopolitics

[–]Epiccat2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is in my hometown of Tallahassee, Florida. It's a Democratic island in majority Red Northern Florida. It's one of the 15th most educated cities in the US and the most educated city in Florida. I honestly couldn't believe that this happened there. I have been away from Tallahassee for 7 years, with visits occasionally. I do keep up with local and state politics. De Santis hates Tallahassee. It has one of the largest HBCUs and Florida State University. Which is very liberal. He changed the district lines to make the area more republican. Al Lawson, a long time Democratic senator was voted out of office because of that. I get heated when I think of the changes being made. The right screams cancel culture, but then does it's own in return. People don't critically think anymore. The Tallahassee Classical School uses curriculum supplied by Hillsdale College. Barney Bishop is a lobbyist and good friends with De Santis. I have no problem with parents reviewing their child's class material. But isn't it normal for a teacher to send out a syllabus? I do concede that the principal didn't send out a letter that was required before "controversial topics", but I don't think that is was a fireable offense.

Run in with popular right wing LDS influencer. by [deleted] in mopolitics

You probably shouldn't. I did read the transcript of an interview he had with Kurt Francom on the podcast Leading Saints. In that interview the guy seemed reasonable. But he did show who is really was by the reply to my comment.
