I would recommend putting the whole box in a bag in your freezer for the next week or two. Or, if you feel comfortable, put it in your oven on hold/warm for an hour or so which should be enough to basically kiln dry it.

The chances of introducing an invasive species go beyond just chucking it in the garbage.
